Hi, Mike Here is some information, in reverse chronological order, that may help you get started. All of the people listed were white. ........................................ Florida Death Index Hannah Walker Thompson, female, died April 1967 in Polk County, Florida You can obtain a copy of her death certificate, which should provide the exact date of death, at this site: http://vitalrec.com/fl.html ............................. Once you have a death date, you should be able to obtain an obituary. Here's a good source: Chris Welch (welchmail@msn.com), who uses the newspaper archives at the University of Florida library. Small charge, good service. ..................................... Federal Social Security Death Index Hannah Thompson Born February 14, 1881, died April 1967. Last Residence: Bartow, Polk County, Florida 33830 Social Security Number: 266-24-4488, issued in Florida before 1951. You can obtain a copy of her original Social Security Number application (probably completed by her, in her own hand) at this site: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi?letter=y&lastname=THOMPSON&firstname=HANNAH&ssn=266-24-4488&birth=14+Feb+1881&death=Apr+1967&middlename=&namesiffix= ................................ ....................... Federal Census - 1930 - Florida - Polk County - Precinct 3 - Bartow - Enumeration District 43-8 - Supervisor's District 6 - Sheet 5A - Lines 40-43 (Enumerated April 17, 1930, with information as of April 1, 1930) The family was enumerated as "THOMSON" (no "P"), and indexed as "THOMASON" on Ancestry.com. Lake Wales - Bartow Road, Residence 95, Family 95 THOMSON James T. - Head (of family) Hannah J. - Wife (of head) Sarah E. - Daughter (of head) James T., Jr. - Son (of head) James owned his own non-farm home, valued at $3,000, but had no radio. He was male, 57, married, and had been first married at 27. He and his parents were born in Georgia. He was a Farmer, with a General Farm which he owned. Hannah was female, 48, married, and first married at 46 (my note: probably about 1927-28 in Bartow, the "county seat" or administrative center of Polk County). She and her parents were born in England, and English was her native language. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1909 and was a naturalized citizen (my note: possibly through her marriage to James, and not through any process of her own). She had no occupation. Sarah was female, 12, and single. She and her parents were born in Georgia. She had no occupation. James Jr. was male 6, and single. He was born in Florida, his parents in Georgia. He had no occupation but had attended school within the year. Husband, wife, and daughter all could read and write. Given the daughter's and son's ages, the father possible came to Florida about 1917-1924. Of possible interest: an English couple (husband and wife) were enumerated immediately before this family (lines 38-39): Joseph M. (CARTLEDG - spelling?) and his wife Ann E. He was 53 (first married at 38); she was 57 (first married at 41). They had immigrated to the U.S. in 1921 and were still aliens. He was a Salesman at a Gas Station, she a Salesman at a General Store. There seemed to have been quite a few English immigrating to central Florida during that time period. .................................. Federal Census - 1920 - Florida - Polk County - Precinct 3 - Bartow - Supervisor's District 1 - Enumeration District 156 - Sheet 3A - Lines 31-35 (Enumerated February 26, 1920, with information as of January 1, 1920) Farm - Residence 40, Family 47 MILLS, William - Head (of family) MILLS, Hilda J. - Wife (of head) WALKER, Hannah J. - Niece (of head) O'BRYAN, Anna M. - Roomer MARRIOTT, Georgiana - Niece (of head) William was male, 70, married, and naturalized. He was a Farmer, with a General Farm, working on his Own Account. and listed as Number 5 on the accompanying Farm Schedule. Hilda was female, 59, married, and naturalized, with no occupation. Hannah was female, 36, single, with unknown citizenship status, and working as a Trained Nurse for a Private Family. Anna was female, 48, widowed, with no occupation. Georgiana was female, 7, single, had attended school within the year, and had no occupation. The four adults could read and write. William, Hilda, and Hannah (and their parents) were born in England. Anna and her father were born in Pennsylvania, her mother in Germany. Georgiana was born in New Jersey, both parents in England. ....................................... Here are more good resources: http://www.ipgs.org/publicat.html The Imperial Polk County Genealogical Society is publishing a series of books transcribing all Polk County cemeteries. Check on Volume IV, which lists Connorsville. Maybe someone at the Society can help you with local research. http://mobiltravelguide.howstuffworks.com/polk-county-historical-genealogical-library-bartow-fl-dr.htm The Polk County Historical and Genealogical Society may be able to help, too. http://www.raogk.org/florida5.htm RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) Volunteers often can provide local reseach--this site has several people listed for Polk County. Be sure to read the preliminary information before making requests. ...................................... I hope that some of this helps--I know how hard it is to do long-distance research. Good luck!
