My great-grandfather's service record abstract indicates that he enlisted in Co. C, 7th Florida Infantry at Camp Lee. Soldiers of Florida and Confederate Military History say that the 7th Florida was formed at Gainesville. In April of 1862, Governor John Milton posted a letter to Brigadier General Floyd instructing him "to arm all the companies which may be at Camp Lee, near Gainesville, - - with Enfield rifles". On April 10, 1862, Governor Milton posted a letter to Secretary of War Randolph which stated "Camp Lee is near Gainesville, East Florida". That's pretty definitive and authoritative as far as the Gainesville camp goes. In addition, however, the Official Records includes a list showing the 5th Florida was at "Camp Lee near Tallahassee" on May 21, 1862, so there were at least two camps in Florida. A quick sort of the Official Records CD returns hits on Camps Lee in Missouri, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. There were probably many more.
