Hi List: Am researching Mills Olcott Burnham, Jr. who enlisted at Camp Lee in Florida. Records indicate he was in Company C and F of the Florida 7th. Several variations of the name are listed. "Biographical Rosters of Florida's Conferedate and Union Soldiers, 1861-1865" records him as Miles Alford Burnan Co. F, 7th Florida, enlisted 11 Apr 1862 See Vol 2 page 736. "Headstones of Heros: The Restoration and History of Confederate Graves in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery, Records his name as Burnham, M.C., Co C, 7th Florida. Florida 7th infantry Co F. as posted on the net indicates one possiblity: Bumink, Miles private. Would also like to know the Civil War era location of Camp Lee in Florida. Any clarifiction of the above appreciated. John L. Whitney [email protected]
Somebody else may know... but if not, two suggestions: 1. Find out what county or counties Companies C & F of the 7th Florida were raised in. It is very likely that if there was a Camp Lee, it was in that vicinity. 2. I don't know what source you got the name Lee from. One of the most active camps in Florida was Camp LEON, 6 miles of Tallahassee on the St. Marks Railroad at Six Mile Pond. (It's actually 5 miles due south of the capitol on the Woodville Highway. The Woodville Highway did not exist at that time, and the six mile distance is no doubt by rail from the depot which is a bit west of the capitol.) In like case with the various iterations of Mr. Burnham's name, could "Camp Lee" have actually been Camp LEON? The only published source that I know of listing such places is William S. Smedlund's _Camp Fires of Georgia's Troops, 1861 - 1865_. Georgia troops spent time at a number of locations in Florida that are listed by Mr. Smedlund. But other camps existed in Florida where Georgia troops never went. Smedlund's list could also be incomplete, even as to where Georgia troops went. He does list a number of camps named Lee. Camp Lee was a popular name. But none of the Camp Lees he lists were in Florida. Richard White Tallahassee, FL John L.
