I realize that this is not a direct response to the question, but rather I am taking an opportunity to pass along a caveat. I have an ancestor, Andrew Haven, who served in the First Florida Mounted Militia and died on militia duty in May 1838. I got that information from the compiled Florida War file in the National Archives many years ago. The book does not list him. Nor is the muster roll showing his service among those copied from the National Archives and placed in the Florida State Archives. I suspect that what happened is that since the records were compiled, that particular muster roll was misplaced, lost, destroyed or whatever. I have no idea how pervasive the problem may be. It's probably not pervasive at all. That may be the only muster roll affected. Or it may not. The point is that the various books that we use are secondary sources and may not include complete information or information as accurate as the primary source or some other, unpublished, secondary source such as the compiled service record. An example of another problem, from another source, is that in _Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Florida_, Lillian Henderson mangled and confused the identity of my great great grandfather J. E. Autry way above and beyond some slight confusion already present in the Compiled Confederate Service Record. Because Henderson had custody of J.E. Autry's widow's pension record, that should not have happened; but it did. Such books are indispensible resources, but they are nowhere near the final word.
