    1. Obituaries - 1980's (people from NY)

    3. Hello, I have both a general question and a specific question about obituaries or death notices from the 1980's. If couples or people from, say, Brooklyn, NY, lived their whole lives there, and then "retired to FL," and were living in Florida for possibly less than 10 years, would they have had a full obituary written up on them in a FL newspaper? Or, would just a brief "death notice" been published? To be more specific, the couple my EX referred to as "Uncle Ed" and "Aunt Bettie" were actually his mother's cousin and her husband. Edward and Bettie (?) McMAHON lived most of their lives in Brooklyn, NY, and, as far as I know, never had any children. I believe they "retired to" Pompano Beach, FL, before I divorced, which would have been between 1970 and 1975. The SSDI Listings show Edward McMAHON dying in FL in July 1983, and his wife, Bettie McMAHON dying in FL in December 1981. I have been trying to find out how "Aunt Bettie" was related to my mother-in-law, whose maiden name was Mary McCARTHY. Mary had only one sister, Eleanor McCARTHY, and they lost their mother when they were young girls. I just had the thought within the past few days that an obituary on Mrs. Bettie McMAHON "might" list her maiden name. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. Would I be able to write a letter to the public library in Pompano Beach and request an obituary look-up?
