There is so much to tell and so little time. I have updated our web site at least 20 times today. <G> http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/statelib.html If you read the latest email below from Barratt Wilkins, former State Librarian, you will see that it is time to start worrying. In addition, I received the following information from Deborah: 1. Seems that certain "budget cut" issues, such as FSL/FSA closing, were targeted to draw outrage from the citizens in hopes of citizen pressure toward our elected officials so they would be open to a legislative recommendation in the upcoming session for a recall vote on Amendment 9......*NPR announced on it's 5:30pm news spot, the possibility of a special recall vote for November on the issue.... [Amen. 9]* Bush is blaming Amendment 9. If that is the real reason, then why is he pushing the contracts for the State Library and why did he talk to FSU and cut the library budgets almost two years ago? There are so many questions to be answered. And, how about this for irony that I received from Anne? http://dhr.dos.state.fl.us/FloridasCommitment.html by Jeb Bush entitled Florida's Commitment To Protect, Restore,And Promote Our Heritage Thank you everyone for all of your valuable input. I know you are helping because it appears the Governor's email can't handle the overloads <G>. However, I think it should be noted that the Nova Southeastern University President was in Tallahassee late last week to discuss transferring the State Library to their new 325,000 square foot building in Ft. Lauderdale. The meeting was reportedly with high ranking officials of the Governor's Office and the Department of State (including the DLIS Division Director). It follows a meeting on January 30, coinciding with the layoff of 55 DLIS employees, when the library directors of the Broward County Division of Libraries and the private Nova Southeastern University met with the Governor's Office and DOS leadership, to lay the ground work for further negotiation(s). Will an agreement be signed transferring the collection(s?) before the Legislature meets and before professional organizations can crank up their campaigns to Save The State Library? Also I have seen nothing on the list serve about the Senate Appropriations TED subcommittee meeting from 9-5 in 412 Knott Office Building on Wednesday, February 12, to receive public testimony about the Governor's Recommended Budget. Room 412 is an unusually large room and contrasts to the smaller Room 117 KB where the committee usually meets. Is anyone representing F.L.A. or its various constituencies planning to be there? Remember "Silence means Consent". If the cultural and historic preservation constituencies are in heavy attendance, and there are only one or two people representing the library community, it might occur to Senators that in order to "oil their squeaky wheels", that library grant funds should be transferred to those programs from what is left in Library grant funds. Also, I understand there is a multi-page justification letter from the DLIS Division Director which was delivered to the FLA Executive Board at their meeting in Sarasota last Friday. February 7. It might be useful if the letter was posted to the FLA website in the spirit of free speech and understanding. Barratt Wilkins
Pam, I have already sent off 3 emails incorporating all of this. I am getting ready to send some more and post it on some places I know. Thanks so much for doing a good job on that web site. Nova, huh? Well, that will really save money, won't it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Cooper" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 7:57 PM Subject: [FLORIDA] State Library Update > There is so much to tell and so little time.
