I received the email below that may be of interest to some of you. I don't know how valid the project is but it certainly sounds fascinating. There are several Florida family names. See list. Pam These names are listed on their web site: Elk Mayo Caroon Gibbs Berry Hodges Buck Pain Farrow Pinkham Brooks Jennette Carrow Squires Whahab Padgett Barbour Pierce My name is Anne Poole and I am a researcher with The Lost Colony Center for Science and Research http://www.lost-colony.com/ in North Carolina. Our research covers many areas, including archaeology and the search for present day living descendants from the orginal colony of 117 men, women, and children, who mysteriously disappeared from Roanoke Island, NC, in 1587. After many years of in-depth research, we believe we have found several people who descend from the colonists after they married into the Mattamuskeet Indians. One of these groups of people are those who have the surname Squires in their family and appear to have come from such areas as Hyde, Dare, and other counties in the area. We know John Squires was the last king of the Mattamuskeet Indians and it is his descendants we have located in recent times. We believe he married into the Indian - colonist group, had sons, and passed the name Squires down. We are very interested in learning as much as possible about any present day Squires descendants. It would be especially exciting if we can find a family who has the oral history of Indian in their family, and even more so if there is a tradition of their early ancestors being from The Lost Colony ! Other names that are connected and are important are Barber and Mackey. If you have any info regarding Squires or any of these names, I would love to hear your history ! Thanks......
