Hello Everyone, I'm new to this list & wonder if anyone could please assist me with the following query? Trying to find any information on Fred Roper, Showman who had a stage act called Fred Roper & His Wonderful Midgets. He & the act used to perform during the 1930's within the UK & then during the 1940's within the US. I have seen an old clipping from the 'New Yorker' on-line which states he was stranded there because of the War etc.... Fred Roper was born in the UK - date / place, as yet unknown but possibly born around the turn of the 20th century?? Fred married a Welsh girl - Elsie M Lewis, b 29 Jan 1911, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales (who would have been a half aunt within our family). She was small in stature & was part of his touring troupe of Midgets both in the UK & US. I'm uncertain at this time if they married within the UK or the US. Fred & Elsie had a daughter called Cherie (Sherrie / Sherry??) ROPER, who was I believe born in the US & is still alive there today. The couple stay in the US & settled in Florida, where I believe that they both died, certainly Elsie did. She died 1 Jan 2002 Saint Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida. Any help would be very gratefully received............. Thanks to all & Regards, Margaret Anne, UK.
A search using Google search engine turned up http://www.wizardofozfestival.org/?pageid=50481 You might try contacting the lady as she is still living according to the website. For a FL death certificate, see http://www.doh.state.fl.us/planning_eval/vital_statistics/deaths.htm Death certs are available from the Office of Vital Statistics, P. O. Box 210, Jacksonville, FL 32231-0042. They cost $5.00 (non-refundable) and it takes 3-4 weeks for processing. You can call 904-359-6900 (recorded msg) to obtain info. Basically it states: send a signed letter stating full name of deceased, sex, death date, city/county, your relationship, your address and your phone number with a check or money order for $5.00. If you can get the death cert, it should list the undertaker. You could then write to them and they may have more information in their files. You should also find the cemetery listed (if she was buried) and they may be able to provide more information. At the very bottom of the website at Step 7, you can click on "order form" under "Fax" and see a copy of the actual order form.
