You could probably get enough to put in a request if you had some basic info on your ancestor to begin with. There are also other ways to get this info, indexes, books and CDs. Before I knew my gr/grandfather Andrew J. Wilson was born in Ireland in 1861 (from what I can tell considering the little I have on him) I used a free database on the internet to find information on Andrew J. Wilson's who fought in the Civil War, found one who seemed to match, and sent to NARA for the info. I have this info which I will send in another mail, but I only WISH this was mine because , wow, it would be so helpful. (If I can't find something on my Andrew J. soon , I may resort to adopting this one into the family.... ) Here is what I did, and what you can do.... (1) Go to American Civil War Research and Genealogy Database at http://www.civilwardata.com/ and click on free demo (I did not pay the $25 fee, I used the free section). Then go down to Personnel , which is free. Then use your surname and first name and I put in NY State as I knew that was where my Andrew J. was. Once you do that all the matches come up, and for me there were 4 Andrew J. Wilsons there, Then you click on the names and see the details. I saw one was from Brooklyn, and so I thought he was a good candidate. (2) I previously had gotten copies of all kinds of request forms from NARA (you might want to read Civil War Records at NARA http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html first, and order a few copies of NATF-80 by emailing them at inquire2@nara.gov tell them what form you want and give them your snail address and they will send them to you free). (3) Fill out the form. You must have complete name, branch of service, state from which he served, year or dates in which he served, union or confederate (if you already know this info skip step 1). It also helps, but you do not have to have unit in which he served, date and place of birth, date and place of death and some other military info. (4) Send the form to the Washington DC address on the form. Send no money. It takes about 3 months and if they find it they write and tell you to send them $10 and they will send you the complete file. (I actually sent in two, as there was one Andrew J. in Brooklyn and one elsewhere in NY, one came back "not found" and I got one, remember what I had previously written about NARA and the 22 minute search, if I still thought that one could have been my Andrew I would have called and questioned that as I had detailed info on him I found on that site). (5) When you get the info, you might get his war record, his pension record, and his widow's pension record. That is what I got, wonderful info, unfortunately its not my Andrew J. Wilson. But if it was, boy, would I be in luck! Here is another site to read up on if you are thinking about doing this.... Finding a Civil War Ancestor http://www.risenblatt.com/genealogy/civilwar.htm Good luck!
