My parents and brother worked at that ship yard during the war. My brother has received $15,000 from the law suit for asbestos poisoning---I guess it's a class action----because of his working on the ships. My mother died of emphysema and, although she smoked, we feel it was exacerbated by the asbestos poisoning. Your friend might want to check this out.
