Hello: As I was transcribing an 1870 census for Leon County, Florida I realized that there were a lot of African - Americans who moved into Leon county after the civil war. They came mostly from North and South Carolina and Georgia. I began to wonder how people searching for their family history would be able to use this information to search back further. In the 1860 census almost all of these people were enumerated on a slave schedule and had no surnames. After the war suddenly they all developed surnames. My question is has anyone ever done a study on where and how they got these surnames? I would very much like to understand this process. Was there a place for these people to register when they took up residence? Any ideas as to where I might look for information on this topic? TIA Sandra Willis [email protected]
