Hi, Pam - This may not be the "Florida" list you want. This one normally refers to the State of Florida, in the United States of America. I suspect that you may want one for the City of Florida, in South Africa, and I'm not sure how to access that one. (There's not much deep mining done in the U.S.'s Florida--probably none-- only a few surface mines for phosphate, sand, maybe a few other things.) Good luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam" <pam2001@hotkey.net.au> To: <FLORIDA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2005 6:38 PM Subject: [FLORIDA] Re William WELLING >I am new to this list and am hoping sks can help me locate William WELLING > who listed his last employment as Vogles......Deep mine Florida, would have > been about 1909,he died in Johannesburg hospital may 1909,aged 60 years,he > is buried Braamfontein Cemetery,South Africa > his friend was J DUNN also working for same mine company,i would be > interested to find out if there was any orbit/death notice in > newspaper, and > very interetsed to find out any information about William Welling whilst > he > was in Florida > Many thanks for your time > Pam from Australia > >

Did any of these men serve in Florida units or receive pensions in Florida? There are several matching names (or close with initials) on the pension records at the Florida State Archives online records and also in the "Biographical Rosters of Florida's Confederate and Union Soldiers 1861-1865". Without further information I can't make a connection. If they are in either one of these categories it will more than likely be faster to obtain the records from the Florida State Archives. Pension records may be downloaded and printed from their site. You would have to order copies of the service records from them. When you start working on other cemeteries I'll be more than happy to check the books for you if they served in a Florida unit. That way you will know if your first resource should be the Florida State Archives. I'm sure their fees for copies of service records are probably lower than from the Federal government. And you can't get better than free pension records :) Leslie -----Original Message----- From: Gail Harris [mailto:peaches@strato.net] Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 7:11 AM To: FLORIDA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [FLORIDA] Subject: Bryant, Hancock & Lanier families / Polk Co, FL fyi... Mr. Charles Edward Westberry, age 58, of Jacksonville, FL, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 after a short bout with lung cancer. Mr. Westberry was diagnosed on 16 May of 2005 which cut short his passion for genealogy. Mr. Westberry was affectionately known to his cyber friends as "Moses" taking that name from one of his grandfathers, the Reverend Moses Westberry, Sr., who is buried in the Bethlehem Baptist Church, Wayne Co., GA. Mr. Westberry had been researching his family roots for over 25 years, which led to the formation of a Westberry website on which he posted all of his findings. Love for genealogy was his life and he was responsible for putting together one of the largest Westberry genealogical collections to be found. Charles was born in New Orleans, LA. He was raised in the WACO State Home in Waco, TX. Mr. Westberry was a Vietnam Veteran. He spent 4 years in the USAF 1963-1967, including time at Holloman AFB, NM; Elmendorf AFB, Alaska; Phan Rang AB, Nam; Danang AB, Nam. He was assigned to the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, "The Gunfighters" & the 389th Organizational Maintenance Squadron, "Phantom Phixer." Among his achievements, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal With Bronze Star, Small Arms Expert Ribbon, & the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. He owned his own upholstery shop at one time in Houston, TX, and was a freelance photographer. One of his loves in life was motorcycles. He could be found frequenting the motor cross tracks with his camera. Charles had spent the past 5 years living in Jacksonville, FL, but he had previously lived in Seattle, WA before moving to Florida. His expertise was steel fitting and structural drafting and Computer Tech. He was preceded in death by his father James Edward Westberry, Sr., and a sister Eyvonne Marie (Westberry) Stewart. Mr. Westberry is survived by his mother, Lena Kathryn (McCain) Westberry; beloved family Matriarch Mary Catherine Westberry; 2 daughters: Jennifer Lynn Westberry and Tammi Lynn Westberry; and 1 son, Gary Gene Westberry; 3 sisters: Catherine Eyvonne Westberry, Carrie Ann Westberry and Virginia Ann Westberry; 4 brothers: Carey Madison Westberry, James Edward Westberry, John Henry Westberry, and Louis Gordon Westberry; 1 grandson; special friends Mr. & Mrs. William & Beverly Greer ( The Greers were taken into the Westberry family on the express desires of the Matriarch of the family, Mary Catherine Westberry, a pure blooded Westberry), a host of nieces and nephews and a whole host of friends. He had been in the Care of Community Hospice of NE FL of Jacksonville, up until the time of his death. In Lieu of flowers it is requested that you contribute money to help defray the costs of keeping the website going and help defray the costs of the funeral. Per his wishes, Mr. Westberry will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony at the feet of his great-great grandfather, James Madison Westberry, a CSA (Civil War) Soldier. A.B. Coleman Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
