Hello Everyone, I'm new to this list & wonder if anyone could please assist me with the following query? Trying to find any information on Fred Roper, Showman who had a stage act called Fred Roper & His Wonderful Midgets. He & the act used to perform during the 1930's within the UK & then during the 1940's within the US. I have seen an old clipping from the 'New Yorker' on-line which states he was stranded there because of the War etc.... Fred Roper was born in the UK - date / place, as yet unknown but possibly born around the turn of the 20th century?? Fred married a Welsh girl - Elsie M Lewis, b 29 Jan 1911, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales (who would have been a half aunt within our family). She was small in stature & was part of his touring troupe of Midgets both in the UK & US. I'm uncertain at this time if they married within the UK or the US. Fred & Elsie had a daughter called Cherie (Sherrie / Sherry??) ROPER, who was I believe born in the US & is still alive there today. The couple stay in the US & settled in Florida, where I believe that they both died, certainly Elsie did. She died 1 Jan 2002 Saint Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida. Any help would be very gratefully received............. Thanks to all & Regards, Margaret Anne, UK.
A search using Google search engine turned up http://www.wizardofozfestival.org/?pageid=50481 You might try contacting the lady as she is still living according to the website. For a FL death certificate, see http://www.doh.state.fl.us/planning_eval/vital_statistics/deaths.htm Death certs are available from the Office of Vital Statistics, P. O. Box 210, Jacksonville, FL 32231-0042. They cost $5.00 (non-refundable) and it takes 3-4 weeks for processing. You can call 904-359-6900 (recorded msg) to obtain info. Basically it states: send a signed letter stating full name of deceased, sex, death date, city/county, your relationship, your address and your phone number with a check or money order for $5.00. If you can get the death cert, it should list the undertaker. You could then write to them and they may have more information in their files. You should also find the cemetery listed (if she was buried) and they may be able to provide more information. At the very bottom of the website at Step 7, you can click on "order form" under "Fax" and see a copy of the actual order form. Elsie Roper is a no show in US census records. There is no ibituary notice for her in the newspapers that I know of that are on line in the Tampa tribune. The only thing I note is a SS death record. Bob
Suzy, your address is on my friends list. I have no idea why they would have bounced it. Just not perfect for sure. If you don't mind please resend. Thanks, Winnette
Winnette: I sent you the information on the cemeteries in Suwannee County, but your spam blocker rejected same. Suzy Lamb
Winn: I have the Cemetery Books that were put out by the Suwannee Valley Genealogy Society and I looked in them and found this: OBRIEN CEMTERY, J H BASS (Age 87 yrs) MATTIE A BASS Aug 26, 1843 - Dec 11, 1913 Also at the Macedonia Cemetery, there are lots of Bass buried there. Let me know if you want the list or just who are looking for. Winnette, In Mt Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Live Oak, Suwannee County, FL There is a J. H. BASS age 87 years Right beside him is listed Mattie A. BASS born August 26, 1843, died December 11, 1913 If you don't think this is the one, and will give me a little while I'll look some more. I have the 4 cemetery books for Suwannee County. One of them doesn't have an index, so it takes a while to look up, and one is all scrambled as for page numbers matching the actual pages in the index.
Winn, Do you know what county he died in? Have you been to the Suwannee GenWeb site? There are some cemetery listings there, though by no means complete. There are also people who will do look-ups locally. There is a link there for the Hamilton County GenWeb site as well. I tried to send this privately and it bounced because of your Spam protection. RBR, Earthlink has spamblocker on your account . . . I filled out the form to bypass. I'm Tracey Hymnsinger. It would be easier just to go ahead and tell everybody on the list. Tracey R.B. Poster, ur e mail address is blocked. So post a message telling all how to access census records in those counties you specified in ur posting. Assume it is thru other than Heritage quest which is available by most libraries and allows home access ??

About 5000 books have been digitized and are available, and they have announced that they are adding about 100 titles a week to the on-line collection. Go to the web site of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU, http://www.lib.byu.edu/ From the list of collections that are displayed, choose: "Find Other Materials" "Electronic" "On Line Collections at BYU" Choose the TAB "Text Collections" And, finally, "Family History Archive" Adrian
Dear List Members, I have had such a great outpour of help from all of you and I hope I did not forget to thank each of you. As I have said, it is so hard being in NY with my sister and immediate family in FL having to handle all that is involved with this. I will be sure to let her know of all the help that all of you offered, knowing it will help her to know that "people do care." Thank you all again, Jan
I responded to this "back channel" (not to the entire list). RW
Dear List, I joined this list for genealogy purposes, but my first request is very personal. My nephew (my sister's son) was killed by a drive by shooting and his brother was also shot and is in critical condition at the hospital. I am hoping that any one that has access to newspapers in the Jacksonville, Florida area send me copies regarding this. I will be more than happy to reimburse any cost involved. This incident happened on November 4, 2005. The names are Daniel Wenk (deceased) and Joseph Wenk (critical condition). My sister from MO (an 11 hour drive) is on her way down to be with her critical son and take care of the remains of her dead son. I live in Port Ewen, New York (many miles away) and I don't feel this is the time to ask my sister about newspaper reports (which I am sure you all can relate with, having a child killed or the possibility of this happening). I have been in touch many times with my sister, but it is for updates on her critical still living son. I don't feel they will find out who killed her son (Daniel), but I do know God will take care of the person or persons who did. Any help would be appreciated, my mailing address is Peterson, PO Box 284 Port Ewen, NY 12466 or through the Internet (if you have a scanner). As I said I will be more than happy to reimburse for this, and I do need to keep 'on top' of what is what without bothering my sister. Thank you for any help you can provide me with. Jan
To all:- Personally, I have many relatives in United States, plus have had many ancestors and enjoy using the 1930 census records. The 1911 Canadian Census was released on June 28, 2005 after about eight years of struggle -- with the assistance of Americans. Many are now involved in transcribing the images either in the long format or my preference, Automated Genealogy. http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ For 1901 and the three-province 1906 http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html Scanned Images of 1911 Census http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1911/index-e.html Should you only wish to look, one does not need to sign in. Click on VIEW and hopefully that section might be transcribed. Should there be corrections needed, as you know them, let me know, as the proofreaders have yet to view the finished pages. One person asked if Americans were allowed to transcribe? YES -- but please sign the finished page -- do this by clicking on CLAIM PAGE after Line 50 is done. Believe it or not, all families in the TO line are part of my family. Muriel M.
