    2. Darrel R. Bell
    3. List Members, I received a message from a Nicole Gaudiano this afternoon, who is a reporter for the Gannet News Service and asked if I would post her request for information regarding those who have received info from Social Security under the Freedom of Information Act. Below is her actual request: "I'm a reporter for Gannett News Service and I'm looking to speak with people who have filed Freedom of Information Act requests with the Social Security Administration for genealogy research. I'm writing a story for "Sunshine Week" to let people know they can seek information from the government through FOIA. If you've used FOIA, would you mind either getting in touch with me or sending me your contact information so I can call you for a quick interview? My deadline is on Wednesday so I need to find someone quickly. I'm most interested in people living in Melbourne, Pensacola, Fort Myers and Tallahassee, where Gannett owns newspapers. I can be reached at ngaudiano@gns.gannett.com <http://www.lani.net/webmail/src/compose.php?send_to=ngaudiano%40gns.gannett.com> or at 202-906-8109. Many thanks, Nicole Gaudiano" Thanks for taking the time to read this message. Respectfully, Darrel R. Bell List Administrator

    1. From Ray Osborne, Details of the cruise for this Sunday the 26th at 2:PM
    2. Ray Osborne
    3. Hello, Here is an update for our upcoming cruise. We have a good number of people who want to go on this cruise this Sunday the 26th so we are expecting a fun, informative and relaxing cruise on the river. I checked out a number of charters and we decided because of logistics that it would be better for us to take a charter out of Port Canaveral on the Blue Dolphin. (Titusville to Cocoa is a long cruise on a slow boat and then there is the factor on how do we get back to our cars) So this will be better. We will meet well before 2:PM on Sunday 2-26 and the cost is $25 plus tax. Please bring your fare of $26.50 in cash. This will be a nice tour of the Banana River and they will let me talk about some of the local history of the area which will include topics like the local indian civilization that once lived here from a chapter of my new book. "Time Passages: Local Tales" Below is the charter boats website which will give you a map to their location. My cell is 243-8097 in case you have questions http://www.spacecoastrivertours.com/ Their number is 652-1052 if you need to call them. Be sure to tell them you are with Ray Osborne's party. Look forward to you cruising this Sunday the 26th with us! They will have refreshments. Please don't be late, be early if you can and forward this to your friends as the more the merrier and if there is plenty of people they may drop the fares for us. 3. Hello, got this from another list; I can't guaranty it's accuracy, so check it our for your self, but sounds like it would be worthwhile to find out. . . Terry Allen has written an article about the current state of affairs when it comes to looking at public records. The U.S. Government's Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 will bar genealogists and many others from looking at birth and death certificates for 70 to 100 years. The proposed regulations are now causing widespread concern among state officials. The original version is here at: http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/2488/

    1. re: Color on 1850 Federal Census
    2. GNW
    3. Everyone was listed by what the census taker thought applied. I have seen both parents listed as white. Then a black child, and a mulatto. The depth of color in the skin apparently is what they went by. But, often Indians are listed as all three, but, primarily black seems to be the rule.

    3. The 1850 census provides for 3 choices for Color; White, Black, and Mulatto. If a Native American were enumerated in this census, what would likely be the color marked down for them? I've seen it asserted that such individuals would be listed as black or not enumerated at all. Can anyone shed any light on this issue? -- Bob Lehto hippob@earthlink.net You live as long as you are remembered ~ Ihminen elää niin kauan kuin hänet muistetaan ~ Finnish/Russian Proverb

    1. RE: [FLORIDA] ??? Legal Aliens circa 1935
    2. Gladys Paulin
    3. William, In 1934, there was no requirement for the registration of aliens. The U.S. Congress passed the Alien Registration Act of 1940 which required all resident aliens to register with the federal government in January 1941 and to report to their local post office (a federal agency) each January thereafter until 1954 when that annual reporting requirement was eliminated. The only earlier requirement for alien registration was during World War I when "enemy" aliens were required to register if they had not filed their Declaration of Intent to become a citizen before a specified date. Alien registration records for the 1940 Act may be obtained through the federal Bureau of Immigration and Citizenship (BCIS) through the appropriate regional office or Washington, DC. The states do not register aliens or have such records. 3. Joseph, From a web search: George H. Hewell Sr began his career in funeral services in 1934. He was 19 when he moved to Jacksonville looking for work. He eventually ended up at the Key-McCabe funeral home downtown on Church Street, making $8 a week. In 1945, he bought the business from the McCabes, and it later moved to Main Street. The Hewell family has another funeral home on University Boulevard South. George H Hewell and Son Funeral Homes Contact: George H. 3. This is not for certain since I'm relying on memory, but I seem to recall that the funeral home we used for my father in 1986 was Key-McCabe. If I'm not mistaken, the funeral home in that building is now George Hewell & Son. If so, they may have the records. There is probably more than one, but address I'm referring to is at 4140 on University Blvd. S., Zip 32216-4373, phone: 904 737-4855. (Here again and this goes way back, before THAT it could have been Seashole Funeral Home.)
