Does anyone know if there is a specific web page for the Korean War POWs who were sent to Russia? Or any other suggestions as to where to search for information regarding one of these men? Thanks. Leslie
Hello, I am new on this list. Can anyone help me ?? What is the county name for Hobe Sound and Ormond Beach. Many thanks for a reply. Helmut Neuner
The following is information received from Robert (Bob) Peterson, Washington state. It was sent in reference to a request for information on the Peterson family from Hamilton County. Perhaps the requestor would like to contact him: Otto31@prodigy.net. Send all requests for information on this family to him! Mildred L. Brown Gatesville, TX ------------------------ My Father's parents came over from Denmark and Norway in 1900..My Paternal Grandmother came from Norway by herself to work as a Housemaid for a family in Illinois. As strange as it seems, My Grandfather Peterson actually lived in Pensacola for a period of time when he left his ship in Pensacola (Sailing Ship). My Dad told me my grandad worked for a lady who owned a lumber business at Bagdad..He sailed a boat from Pensacola to Bagdad carrying stuff and people to the Lumber Mill there. Dad said he thought Grandaddy Peterson actually lived with her in East Pensacola Heights. ( I am attempting to write a story about this).. He had a girlfriend in Norway named Marie who wrote to him in Pensacola and told him her sister had immigrated to Illinois. He left Pensacola and went to Illinois and paid off her obligation and they were married in Chicago. They then moved to the Prairie in Nebraska and homesteaded. That was the first of our Peterson's in Florida.
Karen, It is the Okeefenokee Swamp. It is on the GA/FL line, to the east of Tallahassee. The Suwannee River begins in it. Mark Thomas
Thanks Peggy... I dunno if that's an alternate site that runs all of the time, or if the Department of State's computer nerds just up and decided to change one or more of their web page addresses yesterday. The other URL worked absolutely perfectly yesterday. Anyway... that's another valuable lesson about finding things on the web. Every URL is subject to change without rhyme or reason, any time... and always when it will confuse you senseless. That's me... <G> You've just gotta cope and keep looking if you know or think or believe that there's a web address to be found. One quick and dirty way, especially on big government and corporate sites, is to take chunks off of the right side of the the URL until you hit something that is still functioning, then try to find new links to where you want to be. That doesn't work though, if the entire URL is completely changed... or if the site is just down temporarily or permanently and no other site is created or exists. You're just playing the odds, and get what you get. Hi, I am trying to put my grandmother's old projector film on video tapes for Christmas presents for relatives. She has listed on one piece of film that it contains footage of "Okerfenober Swamp". Can anyone tell me if this is spelled correctly and what and where it is? This film also is of a trip to Jacksonville, Florida, so I thought maybe some of you Florida genealogists could help a fellow genealogist. Thanks, Karen Beck igotav8@aol.com
Fortunes of war, and just my luck. The Florida Photograph Collection site of the Florida State Archives appears to be down now. My guess is that the Department of State is preforming some kind of planned maintenance or upgrade over the weekend. I could be down minutes or days. They probably expect it to be up later today... but if you don't know yet, computers and expectations don't always jibe. When it's back up, it's at: http://fpc.dos.state.fl.us/fpc/index.html RW

One person asked me back channel (I paraphrase): "Don't all search engines find pretty much the same information?" The answer is: It depends on what you are looking for... For really common things, maybe. The more obscure the information you are looking for (such as... Oh say... local or family history), the more likely that the answer is an absolutely flat "no". There is *GREAT* variance in what search engines uncover. If you find something by using one, fine. But if you do not find what you are looking for, I would say that you should try another, and another, and another... etc., if you really seriously want to leave no stone unturned. I would even say that if you *DO* find what you are looking for, in some cases you should still use other search engines to search for the same thing. You might be surprised what will pop up. Many times the results of the various search engines will be about the same, but each will possibly turn up a few unique items. Using a meta search engine... i.e. one that uses a number of other search engines... just makes the process more comprehensive, quicker. It is also still nowhere perfect. I have used several meta search engines to no avail, then went back to what I will call one of the major "simple" search engines, and found it straight away. I have also found something in a meta search engine, disregarded it momentarily then lost it, and been totally unable to repeat the results that brought it to me... on the same search engine on the same day. I think that was probably a fairly unusual quirk, but who knows... maybe not. I've had it happen a couple of times. These computers are miraculous things and like other miracles one should not question their inner workings too closely. There is a lot of science and math in there, along with electricity, silicon, metal, etc. And in the final analysis the machine does whatever the machine does. In a super spohisticated meta search engine it seems to me that what it does is sometimes just a little bit quirky. I'm not going into the technical aspects of search engines. I know just about enough of that to get confused and to confuse anyone I might try to explain it to even more. If you are interested in the technical aspects, I suggest that you look up the subject "search engines" and/or "meta search engines" on a search engine or meta search engine. <G> What I have provided here is just an analysis of my own practical experience. And by the great goddess Clio, if you are a lousy speller or a fumble-fingered typist like me... be careful what you are searching for... it may not be quite the right thing, and you will never find it that way. Sometimes you may need to use a dictionary or if you have a really bad "case" of can'tspellitis, to consult a non spelling impaired person for special assistance. <G> Richard White Tallahassee

I have an old post card of the Soldier Key Club in Soldier Key, FL; looks like July 14, 1910 is on the back. My great aunt, Susan Brown Jay (1869 - 1928) is one of the members pictured. Does anyone know where Soldier Key is? Susie lived in Leesburg. Is there a list for that area? Mitzi Clark Bateman mitzi@cncnet.com
