I was trying to look up an 1880's vintage deed today, and unfortuantely the office closed before I could find it. Does anyone know what the "State of Fla. I. I. Fund" is? It appeared to be the mortage holder on the property per the deed index film. The deed was for property in Orange County Thanks, Beth
I've updated my website at: http://www.maxpages.com/genhome. I added a new message forum, online newspaper that have searchable archives, and volunteer's for lookups. Nancy
Wilbert Cumbee (Combee) married the 2nd time Martha Whidden Brewer and had a slew of kids. Martha was the 1st cousin of my GG Gfather, John Whidden. Wilbert's oldest son, Hampton had two sons that married sisters, Narcissie and Emily Griffin. They were known by family as aunt Cissie and aunt Emmie. They were the sisters of my G Gfather Jesse M. Griffin and each of them had a son who married the sisters of my Gfather, A.D. Ellerbe. Bill Combee's son Dan married Donnie Ellerbe and Jim's son Thurel, married Myrtle Ellerbe. I would like to contact a family member that can help me with the members of this large family. I have some info but it is very sketchy. None of my cousins that I know in the Polk Co. area have done much genealogy and some just don't care. I have a lot of the Griffin family genealogy and will share with those interested. According to family tradition, my wife's great grandmother was born in 1830 in a Seminole village at the north end of Lake Hancock in what is now Polk County. If anyone has any info that would support or refute this, I'd appreciate hearing from them. Tnx for any help. -- Bob Lehto bhippo@erols.com You live as long as you are remembered ~ Finnish/Russian Proverb
Military discharge papers can often be found in the county courthouse where the soldier resided when he returned home. I wasn't allowed to look at these in one PA courthouse, but I've always found them open in courthouses I've visited in Florida. These can contain some excellent information. Hi Brenda- I have not seen any more about your question: > << Does anyone know what it means when land was issued under > Armed Occupation Act (27 Stat. 502) authority Aug 4, 1842? >> > I offer the following The purpose of this act was to get settlers into "buffer" areas between populated areas in FLA and the Indians. Such settlers were offered help by the US including transportation to the settlements, rations until crops could be grown, guns and ammunition for self-protection and protection by the Army. My ancestor Cornelius Taylor , for example, took a number of families from around the Mayport area in Duval Co down to the north shore of Lake Monroe where he established the little town of Enterprise. There was also another settlement at Fort Mellon. But after many settlers were in place the Army reneged and withdraew their troops and stopped issuing supplies. Many of the settlers left in fear of the Indians. Those that stayed could eventually obtain certificates for the land they had settled on. > >>>My question is: Does anyone know what it means when land was issued under Armed Occupation Act (27 Stat. 502) authority Aug 4, 1842? Is this a land record I should send for also? Will what I receive give me more than just the township and range info? Should this be sent to FL Archives or NARA?>> Yes the location of the land is given in the certificate. As I recall I got the certicates for Cornelius T from the National Archives but this has been years ago. I would suggest trying FLA first. Hope this helps. Ed T of PGH
You need VA For SF-180 (Request for Military Records) which can be obtained from any county veterans service officer in the U.S., many veterans organizations, etc. There is a good explanation of the the process in getting military records at: http://www.va.gov/benefits/pafoia.htm and you can also download a copy of the form at that URL. Be forewarned that most WWII military service records were burned in a collosal fire at the St. Louis Federal Records Repository in 1972. You can probably get proof of service, but most of the details will remain unknown for all time because of that fire. Hello! Does anyone know how to research records for a World War 2 veteran? I'd like to know when my relative served, what outfit, etc. Thanks for any advice you can provide. Corey
The site I was looking for only gives the yearly events from 1900. I did not remember that but when you think about it that was 100 years ago. So try it. http://dmarie.com/asp.history.asp?action=process. A fun place to check out for children and grandchildren any way. Sarah

Hate to post this to various lists, but deeply hope that someone on some of the lists will have the address I need. A few months back, I had a web site address for getting into and after entering year you were looking for, it would come up all the important dates of that year with what happened on it, such as Dec. 7, 1941-Pearl Harbor attached. Also what songs were popular, who was President, etc. It was so intersting and want to use to make a booklet for each grandchild. The person who was doing this web site was "Dmarie" Is this familiar to any of you? If so please privately let me know. I apologize for posting, but feel this does have some genealogical value to those of us working on dates and facts. Please dont get upset but I really need this and again accept my apology if this request upsets you. Thanks for any info to this web. Sarah
I want to thank everyone who offered to help me get ahold of the article I posted about yesterday, regarding Noel Rabun Raulerson. Several people emailed to either offer help or tell how to get ahold of the item. Hi all... I am in the process of transcribing a few deeds from the Ancient Records Book of Alachua County. As I transcribe them I am posting them to the FLALACHU-L and the FLGILCHR-L mail lists. If you are interested in these areas and the time frame you might want to subscribe to one or the other. BTW... It is almost like a trip into the past reading these Deeds. There are already 28 such deeds in the archives of those lists. Jim Check out the Alachua Co. For those of you who have not found a source of info on Florida CW Soldiers, the URL below will give you access to a lot of the units from Florida. The project is far from complete and the source book (Soldiers of Florida) is not as complete as one would like. As always the volunteers who have worked on this have try to do it as accurately as possible but from time to time a typo does creep in. Also it should be noted that the original spelling in the records is often incorrect so try any spelling variations you can think of when looking at the material. < http://www.psy.fsu.edu/~thompson/fl_acw/fl_acw.html > Best of luck, Ron Wakulla County FL GenWeb < http://mailer.fsu.edu/~rthompso/wakulla.html > Franklin County, FL GenWeb < http://mailer.fsu.edu/~rthompso/franklin.html > Civil War Soldiers of Florida < http://www.psy.fsu.edu/~thompson/cw/units.html > Antique Engines, Genealogy, Puzzles < http://mailer.fsu.edu/~rthompso/Ron-page.html >
