Just received a death notice on my Great Uncle who died in Fort Meyers. On it listed a brother, James Bamford who lived in St. Petersburg. This information took place around 1975 or so. The only information I have on James Bamford is his birth, 03 January 1896 in Providence, Rhode Island, and his parents James Bamford, born in England in 1864 and his mother Janet Jardine, born 05 June 1869 in Hawick?, Scotland. If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would be forever grateful. Thank You, Patty Brown

According to the Geographic Names Information System, Useppa Island is in Lee County. Good luck! Liane let@injersey.infi.net
>Jim I want to post a query to Fla but don't know the county. What county would >Useppa Island be in? Thanks Joe >Jmiller789@aol.com USEPPA ISLAND (12/98) It was a beautiful December day about 11 a.m. when three boats pulled out of the Sanibel Harbor Marina headed for Useppa Island. Boat #1 was a Baja 272 Islander owned and piloted by RalphC. Boat #2 was a SeaRay 24 Deckboat owned and piloted by RogerD. Boat #3 was a Regal 24 Deckboat rented from Port Sanibel Marina and piloted by PaulW. On board these boats were 26 members of the Lexington Boating & Fishing Club. Skipping over the glittering waters of the Intercoastal Waterway and Pine Island Sound, the three boats passed on the leeward side of Sanibel Island, Captiva, North Captiva and Cabbage Key. The sun splashed the passengers and talk of remembered travel adventures filled the airways within the boats. With an eye toward passing boats, a wave here and a wave back signaling recognition of one of the great assets of living in Southwest Coastal Florida, the hour and fifteen minute ride to Useppa went by too quickly. Dolphin watching was high on the agenda and the human-friendly mammals did not disappoint. The approach to Useppa immediately suggests that this is not your typical barrier island sandbar. It is hilly and the vegetation dense, with a variety of stately old Florida structures - including The Collier Inn, named after Barron Collier, being the focal point of the island. After docking we disembarked and began a truly beautiful winding quarter mile walk to the Inn. Overhanging the walkway were hundreds of tropical plant varieties that acted as a cooling canopy. It was like we were caste into a lifestyle of another time as this grand walkway made its way through the majestic foliage past seaside cottages and private homes. Looking down a forty to fifty foot embankment on the left was a wide beach that was once the training site of the foiled Bay of Pigs Invasion by the Kennedy Administration. On a high bluff overlooking the water on both sides of the island, we were treated to lunch. Many of our members were interested in visiting the local museum where they donned head phones and listened to the history of the Island's colorful past while also viewing a variety of paintings and artifacts. The Island's history has been documented to over ten thousand years ago when nomadic people roamed in search of food in prehistoric times. The Calusa society is well documented to have inhabited the island for centuries. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the island played a role in the early days of Florida exploration by the Spanish, and was later a mainstay to the Caribbean Pirates - for which it got its name. In terms of modern history, the island has become known for its hospitality and its fine living. Guests at the Inn, beside the Lexington folks, include the Rockefellers and Roosevelts, movie stars and numerous heads of state. Today the island is operated as a private club: The Useppa Island Club and thanks to RalphC, we were privileged to be guests of his for a day. At about 3 p.m. we departed for our Lexington home and just outside the Useppa harbor, we saw a rare sight. Over 100 White Pelicans were sunning themselves on a sand bar. Heading into the wind, our friends, the Dolphins, rejoined us as we retraced our wake for the Sanibel Harbor Marina, docking shortly after 4. Judging by the comments, it was a great day had by all. Found the above with Excite search engine. Anne Futch

As a rule of thumb, the term "promoter" in Florida often refers to real estate sales... and coupled with the name of a place in Florida, I would believe it pretty likely that he was promoting land sales/development in that place. Hi all --- I'm looking for information on my paternal grandmother, Margaret "Peggy" STEELE, who was born in Guelph, Ontario probably around the year 1914. She married Charles McCullough DOVE from Tennessee or Virginia, USA, and they moved to Florida. The oldest of their three children was born in 1938 in St Petersburg, Florida. I don't know where or when they married, or anything about Peggy's family. I have a little bit of information on the McCullough side though, and if anyone wants it, I'll be glad to share! --julie b in east tennessee Thanks!!!
I am french. I have recently learned that I am Franco-American. My name is Claude Richard and I live in the southern part of France. The circumstances surrounding my birth were concealed from me until recently. My father is Richard Gray and this is what I know about him: 1. He was in Oran, Algeria, in October and November, 1943. 2. He may well have been in the US Army. His provisional base wasn't near the harbor or the airport. 3. He was almost 6 feet, with light brown hair, and blue eyes. 4. His military base was situated southeast of Oran, between the Choupot area and the Cuvelier area (near Cite Petit). A road separated the base from a big Algerian market hall. 5. His dress uniform was a khaki jacket made of silky cloth. He had a cap and wore high shoes and gaiters. 6.My father was an "MP" (military police). 7. His friends called him Dick and he had a friend called Mike. 8. He apparently came back to the States, it seems before the end of the war. 9. He was in Oran until around 15 November - beginning December 1943. He came back in Oran : he had a few days'leave at the end of December 1943. I have tried to find my father without success. The results of my research are condensed below. In the fall of 1943, an American soldier named Richard Gray, between 20 and 23, was based at Oran in Algeria. There he met a young woman, my mother Lucienne Martin, 17 years old. They became very fond of each other and planned to be married. Richard received wedding dress photos from his sister who lived in the U.S. At the end of 1943 (end november or beginning december) Richard Gray was transfered to another, unknown to me, place to continue the war. He should have been informed by mail of my birth, probably in September, 1944. This story might be common place, but some troubling, complicating events intervened in this love story. Richard wrote often to my mother during the war and after he returned to the US. He said that he wanted to marry her; he expressed it in his letters. Unfortunately, my grandmother intercepted and destroyed all of his letters. She did not want this marriage to take place - it would mean that her daughter and grandson would move to the USA. I recently learned in March, 1998, from my mother the circumstances surrounding my birth. During this 54 year period, my mother thought she had been deserted, in a cowardly manner, by her fiance . To be deserted pregnant at a tender age was very difficult. I made several inquiries in my family in 1998 and I began to learn several things from an aunt. Before her death in 1977, my grandmother confided to my aunt that she had destroyed all correspondence between them as well as a few papers belonging to my mother. While she never knew Richard Gray, the account of my aunt was a good one and all of her explanations were later verified. In September, 1998 I finally learned the truth to my mother (the destroying of letters). The burdening facts that she was a deserted woman and an unmarried mother were out and, at that time, she told me my father's name. The passing years and the efforts to forget have resulted in fading memories. I have created this site, attempting to look for my father. Here I have placed a photo of my mother at that time. I have written lot of emails to Gray Families who have adress email on the web. I continue to use all the opportunities of the internet in my search. The surname Gray is a very common one in the US. If Richard Gray can be located, if he wishes, he will be able to contact me. I only want to know if he is alive, any details of my American family, and if he has been informed of my search. It's VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW the name of his Army. Is there a veteran who was in Oran during the WWW II and would answer me ? Please excuse me for any improprieties. I would like very much to find him still living, and, if so, I would like to hold him. If you have no knowledge of my father, if you could forward this request to ten veterans or people you know, and ask them to do the same, Thank you very much for all your help.
