Does anyone know if "The Florida Peninsula", a newspaper published in Tampa in the 1850s is available on film or fiche anyplace? I would like to see if there is an obituary for my ggrandfather, William Hawkins. Thank you. Louise

Since the URL is so long for Web Luis you will have to click on the site. It will only bring up part of the URL. Minimize that window then go back to your email and copy the 2nd line of the URL. Then maximize the Web Luis window and paste the 2nd line of the URL at the end of the URL that you first brought up. There may be an easier way with these long URL's but I don't know what it is. Web Luis in the online catalog for the whole state university library system. Good Luck, Anne Futch

Hi, new to the list today. I am searching for a needle in a haystack I think. I had a great uncle named Edward F. Higgins born 8-1-1887 in Boston Ma., son of Patrick and Margaret Burke Higgins. He seems to have disappeared from the family tree somewhere in the 1935-1950's. On of the relatives thinks he went to Florida because of asthma, but that cannot be documented. What I am looking for is to see if the name rings a bell with anyone on this list. Rumor has it that he married and divorced but who knows where. I have checked the SSdeath index and he is not on it. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance Maureen Higgins Hatfield
I see so many postings saying that various county census transcriptions have been uploaded to webpages. I hope that these are being linked to appropriate state sites so those not belonging to these mailing lists but trying to do research-can you imagine trying to do it without these lists, though- will be able to find the needed information. Just a thought and a suggestion. Peggy
Hi Rose, That would probably be San Marcos de Apalache located at St. Marks, FL, Wakulla county. On my Civil War page dealing with north Florida ( http://mailer.fsu.edu/~rthompso/csa-page.html ) is a link to the State Historic site at St. Marks and also one a history of the Civil War in the area. Allen Gerrell ( K10750@aol.com ), one of the rangers at the site, is very knowledgable on the Civil War in the area and the forts long history. Bob; Simeon Lewis SPARKMAN was an older brother of my GG Grandfather Elijah Byrd SPARKMAN. According to the book "Plant City - Its Origin and History" the Second Indian War ended in 1842 and the Third Indian War began in 1855. On page 43, it states that a volunteer company was commanded by Captain S. L. Sparkman from December 1, 1855 to January 1, 1857. Also, it gives some of family names on the roster (Platt, Collins, Blocker, Frier, Hollingsworth, Lanier, Rogers, Sparkman, Harris and Carney). Hope this helps. Simeon C. Sparkman, Jr. SCSPARKY@aol.com PS: I'm subscribed in the "Digest" mode. Does anyone know a better way than "cut and paste" to reply. I can't be 100% certain, Rose, but I would interpret the words Ft. St. Marks a little differently than it sounds in your question. St. Marks is a place ancient in Florida History. It is about due south of Tallahassee on the coast in Wakulla County, where the St. Marks River flows into the Gulf of Mexico. I believe that it was a place that the Navarro expedition landed... and it was a place the Spanish maintained a fort at from very early days. It was the place Andrew Jackson occupied about 1818 and hung the two British traders who had been trading arms to the Indians that had raided into Georgia and points north, when he took Florida from the Spanish. And it is the only place on the Florida coast that I am aware of that the Confederate military continuously maintained a fortification during the entire Civil War... though it could easily be bypassed and was, with the resulting Battle of Natural Bridge in March 1865. The name of the fort that the Spanish built at St. Marks was San Marcos de Apalachee. The Confederates called their earthwork fort there Fort Ward. The old Spanish fort at St. Marks is most likely the place your ancestor was enrolled. Fort Ward was not built or named till a year or two later... For a collection of links about St. Marks, see the web page about my ancestor John Shepard Haven at: http://pone.com/ts/rw0x.htm Richard White Tallahassee TOMNROSEJ@aol.com wrote: > > During the Civil War my Great Uncle James M. I think I would write to special collections at the state university in Miami (something like International) They may have the newspapers, the newspapers may tell who the attorneys were, then see if anyone has the attorneys papers. The Monroe county courthouse may have files on these records. Hi fellow researchers, Is there anyone out there who can tell how I can go about getting transcipts of a murder trial that happened in Monroe County (Key West) in 1891? There are actually three trials transcripts that I need. They are all for the State of Florida v. Emilio Garcia for the murder of Jaime Mira in 1891. I believe the other trials happened in 1892 and 1893. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Cheryl Sanchez-Sivers Searching: Mira/Martinez/Cepero/Sanchez

I'm so sorry, I was not clear about the new list. First, it is a list for the EDGE family researchers. Anyone interested in the surname EDGE is iinvited to join us. Second the Modes are as follows: "L" is individual messages -- they come to you one at a time and "D" is digest mode that sends messages in a "lump." The digest mode is usually best for someone who pays for each message that is sent to them. Sorry for the confusion. Well, folks it is ready! The EDGE Mailing list is online and the instructions are as follows: Briefly (very), people can subscribe to your list in mail mode by sending a message to EDGE-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If they prefer digest mode, they should send the command instead to EDGE-D-request@rootsweb.com. To unsubscribe, they should send the command "unsubscribe" to EDGE-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or EDGE-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, they should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if they want messages to stop, they should simply unsubscribe. To post to both EDGE-L and EDGE-D, messages should be sent to EDGE-L@rootsweb.com. Messages sent there will appear both places. Enjoy!!
