    1. Civil War in Fernandina
    2. I had a Great Uncle James M. KERSEY that enlisted at St. Marks in Co. C 4th Regiment during the Civil War. He died at Fernandina FL. on 17 Jan 1863. Was there a battle going on there at that time during the Civil War? Or was that where a hospital was for the Confederates. I would like to know where he was buried. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Thanks, Rose

    1. WWI Draft Registrations
    2. Pam Hall
    3. Hi: Sorry to disappoint everyone, but I only have the draft registration copies for Indian River County. How I got them was through the LDS church rental program. The names are in order by county and then alphabetically by name. Of course, the complete index is on the internet in the Archives of the USGenWeb for Florida: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/fl/flfiles.htm The cost to rent the film is only $3.25 or $3.50 for 30 days. Check your yellow pages for a local LDS church and call them. I downloaded Indian River County indexes from the Archives and made a comparison to the microfilm. Because there are three draft registrations, each of the cards are slightly different and they ask different questions. Only one draft asks the place of birth--June 5, 1917. So if you are lucky and they are on that draft, they are worth having. But, even if you don't have the birthplace, other information is asked such as closest relative, where they work, whether they are native born, age. It is always exciting to get a copy of an original document that your ancestor signed. I have been using the cards to compare to the cemetery listings we have in this county and have made some very interesting finds. It is definitely well worth the search. Good Luck! Pam -- Pamela J. 1. Bulk Mail
    2. I would like to make some corrections to information I posted some time ago regarding non- profit bulk mail. I had been told by two postmasters that no advertising was allowed in publications mailed by non-profit bulk mail. However, after many telephone calls I have come up with the following. If you mail at least four times a year on a set-schedule and fill out a form declaring this to be a periodical you are allowed advertising (and lots of it); however, you may not advertise credit cards, debit cards, credit/debit cards, insurance and travel. Since non-profit bulk mail is subsidized by the US Government, Congress sets these rules not the USPO. At least that is what is set forth in Publication 417 last printed October 1996 and interpreted by the bulk mail office in Pensacola. Leslie

    1. Lost relative in FL...McLemore
    2. Hello Florida List....I am posting this request to try find more information on my Great great Grandmother Sarah McLemore, Wife of James Brance McLemore. I know from census records that James Brance was born in North Carolina around 1840. I do not know the date of Sarah's birth, because she never shows up listed with the family. I have all the childre and their birth places and dates, which indicated a southern migration from North Carolina to GA and finally into North West FL. The interesting part is that the mother is alive during the migration to FL; however her name shows up no where on any records. Deck McLemore, which was born around 1915 told me that "Grandma McLemore" was mentally unstable and the family kept her at the Florida State Hospital in Chatahoochie. Deck's Father James Brance Jr. would take Grandmother home for holiday's (Deck recalled) however, she was so crazy that they had to take her back to the hospital each time! This would explain why she would not show up with the family at their homes on the census records, especially in FL. Deck said grandmother died around 1920 and was burried in the Hospital Cemetery. This is all I know about this woman. I found her first name out by accident on a death certificate of her daughter Flora Lee, which was my Great Grandmother. I have lots of dates on the children, marriage records and I have much information on her husband James Brance McLemore, which was buying and selling lots of property in North West Florida at the turn of the Century. I am happy with all the information I have on the McLemore Family, but I would love to know more about this mystery woman Sarah from North Carolina. I have found only one source with her name, the death certificate of my great grandmother Florah. I wonder why this woman's history was lost and every shred of her exsistence is gone? I have checked some Census records for the Hospital, no luck. I have checked the FL death record's prior to 1920 no Sarah McLemore. Does anyone have an idea how to find someone who was detained in mental facilities at the turn of the century. If anyone is affiliated with the Hostpital maybe they could give me a lead on how the Hospital in Chatahoochie recorded and maintained the residents under their charge around 1900 to 1920. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks So Much Steve Forehand from Panama City FL.
