Hi, this is a repost, I'm still seeking help on this. I'm interested in obtaining an obituary for WRIGHT WILSON LOVELESS, last residence was Tallahassee, Florida. He was born June 16, 1916 and died October 25, 1987. Anybody that lives around the Tallahassee area that can look at newspapers on microfilm, I would like very much to make connect with you. Please email me if you can help me!! Dave dunston@netins.net Iowa
I have recently created a website "Our Ancestors in American History," which includes, on the *Florida Pioneers* pages, some information about the MADDEN family which lived 1836-abt 1885 in Florida, also a bit about their roots in Massachusetts. The URL is: http://www.law.fsu.edu/faculty/atstone/ancestors Take a look. If you think we might be related, I'd love to hear from you! Alva T. Stone atstone@law.fsu.edu
My husband's great-aunt was born in Florida, in 1858, according to the 1860 Chelsea, MA census. Her name--Nellie Gardner Pratt. Her parents were Frank Greenwood Pratt and Kathryn Gardner (Hancock). There was a marriage for a Frank G Pratt and a Kathryn Hancock about the right time in Providence RI. There is a family tradition that there was a connection to the Hancocks. So we don't know if Kathryn was a Gardner who married a Hancock and then married Frank Pratt, or if her maiden name was Kathryn Gardner Hancock. The name Gardner was carried down for two or three more descendants. Kathryn was born in NC according to the census. We have information on the Pratts. Frank was born in Salem. He was a cotton merchant--which I suppose could account for being in Florida. However, he lived in Chelsea in 1860. By 1870 he was in Memphis TN where he died in 1871. His son Frank Greenwood Pratt was born in Chelsea in April 1860. Family stories say Kathryn was married 5 times, but she was still known as Kathryn Gardner Pratt in censuses through 1880, as she was living with dtr, Nellie and her family. We know that she married in 1910 to a C H Wiley in Locke Mills, ME, but cannot find a record of that marriage. Seems highly unlikely but would like to find a birth record for Nellie in Florida. Thanks for listening, any help appreciated. Shirley near Seattle, using FTM 5.0 and PAF 3.0
In reply to your question about the Thames in Escambia Co. I wnent to school with a Ernesr Thames but haven't seen him since about 1946. I do know that he is he is still living in Pensacola, Fla. He is married to a former Rose Geeker of Pensacola. Rose has a nephew of cousin who is a circuit judge in Escambia County. His name is Nick Geeker. You might want to contac him as I am sure he is close to Rose and Ernest and may be able to furnish an address of Ernest. This family is the only one I have heard from who is living in Escambia County so it is is quite possible that there may be a connection to the Thames that you are researching. Good Luck Kenneth Brown
I'm posting this to the lists just in case I accidently missed someone. I want to thank to everyone who responded so promptly to my query regarding look ups at Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Jackson Co, FL. I did find my father, John Calvin YON, listed, but not my half-brother, J.E. YON. You're a great group and appreciate your assistance. Thanks again! Liz
Could some kind person please look up "Jackson County, FL Tombstone Inscriptions 1777-1960"? I know this book is at the Fla St Archives. I need a list of the YON's buried in the Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Jackson Co, FL. Thanks! Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL
Would like to contact anyone working on the THAMES or TIMS family in Florida, especially west Florida. I need some information on the Escambia & Santa Rosa County members of the family. I have a large database of Thames information and am trying to locate some missing descendants of my great grandfather Thames. Glad to share information. Lee

My memory is not that great, but - at the State Archives in Tallahassee there is a roll or so of microfilm containing the applications (and denials) for property under the Armed Occupation Act. The requirements are spelled out on the microfilm. I think I remember it stating the person had to be free, male (may be white, not sure), over 21 years of age, and have been on the property for five years, and agree to bear arms. Please do not quote this as gospel, but I am sure there is more information on this. I hope this helps. Cindy Regarding: >>>My question is: Does anyone know what it means when land was issued under Armed Occupation Act (27 Stat. 502) authority Aug 4, 1842? Is this a land record I should send for also? Good Morning Everyone. It is my first time on this list and was wondering if anyone could help with a problem I have. My name is Sharon Kavanagh, I live in Australia. I have just found my fathers family and mine living in Newfoundland, we have one problem. His eldest sister (who is the eldest of 13) Mary Elizabeth Kavanagh (married name believed to be Corrigan) hasn't been heard of for a number of years. The last time anyone in Newfoundland heard from her she was living in Hollywood, Florida. She has a number of children but I only know the names of 2 of them, they are her daughter Mary Hickman (who was living in Florida with her) and Chester her son, and MEK son John Corrigan. Mary E was born in Newfoundland in May 1921. That is all that I know about her, and seeing the family hasn't heard from her either for some time they cannot shed anymore light on this subject. Is there anyone out there that can give me a few hints as to where to look or who to contact. If so I would be truly grateful. Regards, Sharon Kavanagh
I have received from the NARA homestead applications and was thrilled. My question is: Does anyone know what it means when land was issued under Armed Occupation Act (27 Stat. 502) authority Aug 4, 1842? Is this a land record I should send for also? Will what I receive give me more than just the township and range info? Should this be sent to FL Archives or NARA? Suggestions please. Thanks much Brenda Antal Maitland, FL
I am trying to research the MILLENDER line from Carabelle, Franklin Co. FL. I do not have access to the 1900 and 1910 census from Franklin Co. Can someone help me locate this line? Thanks, Jo Anne

I am a Florida native who is now living in a small town in northern CA. Would some kind person do a census index look up for me on Benjamin TIPTON (sometimes mistakenly spelled TIFTON) in 1860? I also can't find his sons, Chapman, Isaiah, and Jesse who were in their twenties. Benjamin was a Freewill Baptist minister who was in Wakulla Co, FL, minister of the Mt. Elon Baptist Church and in the tax digest in 1852, 1857 until 1859, but he isn't there in 1860. He moved throughout the GA/FL/ AL area. I find him in 1870 in Early Co, GA, but he isn't in GA for the 1860 census either. The above sons completely disappear; perhaps they died in the war. Another son, Jason enlisted in Ocala, FL. I can order the census films through our library, but I can't order the census index, and I don't know where to look. I am also interested in connecting with any other TIPTON researchers in FL. Wishing you all a great day. Mitzi Clark Bateman mitzi@cncnet.com
There is a Fort Clinch in Fernandina, pre Civil War I think. You might check some sites on Fernandina, they may have some history about the fort. Good Luck, Brenda Collins

Rose... We meet again. <G> I'm sure there must be someone around who knows both more about the 4th Florida and Fernandina than I ever will, but just in case there isn't... The most definitive place to look for information about any Confederate soldier's cause of casualty, is his individual record in the Compiled Confederate Service Record on microfilm from the National Archives and available in various places including the Florida State Archives. These records are fragmentary, contain errors, and were compiled about 30 years after the fact by creating cards recording individual information from unit record documents such as muster rolls... plus any actual Civil War documents that existed concerning the individual soldier. I do not have a statistical breakdown, but there may have been more Civil War deaths by disease than by battle... and even if there was a battle in the area a particular soldier may have died from exposure to the elements, accident, or disease. I have one ancestor who seems to have been written up both ways by the Confederate medical corps, and I have the strong suspicion that they were so hard pressed that the person writing the record had no idea and dead being dead they just wrote some gibberish down and moved on to the next man. My recollection is that there were several Federal "occupations" and withdrawals from Fernandina. I don't recall there being much of a fight involved... but any time opposing forces came even into close proximity there was always a possibility that one or two stray soldiers might end up killed, wounded or captured. If you have ever read Erich Maria Remarque's _All Quiet on the Western Front_, you will know that to the man who died that day it was no consolation at all that the war was almost over and that there was no big battle that day.
