I would like to purchase a copy of "My Autobiography" by Dr. C.A. Hentz. I think the original in the Southern Historical Collections of the University of North Carolina Library along with copies. There are also copies at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. and at the Gadsden County Public Libraty in Quincy, FL. If I cannot purchase this book, my second choice would be to have some kind person make xerox copies and snail mail it to me. I would be happy to pay for copies, postage and your time (within reason). I work full time and cannot travel. I've tried to get it on inter-library loan, but have been unable to do this, also. Can anyone help? Thanks, Liz Gerlits (Deretha Elizabeth Yon Gerlits) Palm Bay, FL
Just a quick note to thank all that responded to my post about the Jacksonville library and newspaper. Your time and help is appreciated! Have a good day! Thanks, C. Hall
Several years ago I requested a copy of the marriage information from Florida Vital Statistics for a distant cousin but was told none existed. Does anyone know where else I might obtain this information? For almost ten years I have been trying to locate this cousin to share with him much family information which I obtained in letters written by his gr-grandmother to my grandmother in the 1930's and then by other family members in the 1940's & '50's. His name is Jack/John SCHAUB and he was born 1930 in San Bernardino, CA. He was married March, 1953 in Jacksonville, FL. As this was the time of the Korean War and a Californian doesn't usually purposely move to Florida, I feel he was probably in the Military, maybe Navy since he was in Jacksonville. He probably met and married a Jacksonville girl. As his mother was a member of LDS in San Bernardino he might have married in a LDS church in Jacksonville. Are there any SCHAUBS listed in the Jacksonville city directories(any years/s)? Looking forward to hearing from you. Jo kester@saber.udayton.edu
Could someone please give me the e-mail address for the S. S. Death Index? Thanks for your help. Maureen
Hello List....... Just wanted to let all of you in on my experience with Florida Times Union........ I wrote asking for information concerning an article that had been printed back in the mid '70's....... wanted to know if they could, or would look it up, how much, etc. Didn't hear from them for several weeks so I just assumed I was being ignored... they had my snail mail address and my e-mail address. One day after several weeks had passed, in the mail came a letter with two copies of the page I was asking about.... complete with a bill for about $28.00....... there was a $25 look up fee..... Had I known that I would not have ordered the copies..... I would have waited and found someone to look it up on micro film at a library...... So........... be careful...... I paid the bill, but wasn't completely happy about it.... if you are not prepared to pay that much for what you are seeking..... look for another way. Dee

Looking for information on a James Sidney Shuter who died in 1981 in Jacksonville. If this sounds familiar- please email me at CRMN@aol.com Also is there a mailing list for Jacksonville or Duval County? Does anyone know if the Jacksonville newspaper called the Florida Times Union has an obituary archive that I would be able to request a copy of an obituary? Or is it possible to contact the Jacksonville Library for a 1981 obituary? Any information would greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time! C. Hall

Dear Steve, Is Orrie Tanner who lived in Miami in your data base? I know he was a cousin of my grandmother, Lila Mary Tanner m. Frank Willard Vernon, who was born in Tampa in 1888. She was the daughter of William Charles Tanner and Mary O. Robles. Other children of William Charles were Stella m. Donald McIntyre, Joseph Alfred, Concheta m. Claude Hayman and Ethel who died at age 8. I know Orrie had a brother Harry who was born in Indiana and I think Orrie was also. Orrie had a daughter, Gladys who married a Hill and a couple of sons. There was also a Tanner who was a ball player who was related but I don't recall his name. I hope this rings some bells. Our Tanner family was in NC in 1850 then in Indiana from ?-1878-84. Then they moved to FL. William Charles' father was Alfred. Alfred's spouse was Elizabeth ? Alfred is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Tampa, FL. Where was he between 1850-1888 when he died? We know there was a daughter, Eliza Jane who married William Wilkerson and is buried in Cortland, Indiana. We think there were other sisters also . We also know there are cousins who lived in Indian until the 1950-60's who my grandmother corresponded with. Names (married) were Mabel Judd and Ruby Hill. Ruby and Mabel were cousins, not sisters. I am still seeking information on William H. Creel who lived in the Polk Co., Fl. area near Eagle Lake, Fl. William H. Creel was born Oct. 1854 either in Ga. or Fl. (different census give different states of birth). >From 1860-1880 I find William H. in Berrien Co., Ga. After that in 1900 he is living in Polk Co., Fl. William H. Creel married Mary Jane Candance Fletcher b. Jan 1860(could be listed as Benefield because her step father was a Benefield) in Ga. sometime in the 1870s. I can't find a marriage record in Berrien Co., Ga. but I have been told by the Probate Judge here that sometimes couples didn't return after applying for a marriage license and the marriage may never have been recorded. Children of William H. and Mary Jane Candance Creel included: 1)Missouri b. Dec. 1876 married first time a Gaskins and had two boys from this marriage Andrew J. b. 1896 and David Gaskins 1898. Missouri was listed as a widow in her father's household in Polk, Co., in 1900. 2)Florence (don't have bd with me) married a Wiggins from Lakeland, Fl. She lived and raised her children there and died in the early 1960's. 3) Seward b. Feb. 1881 m. Ovida Thornhill whose family was living next door to this family in 1900. I don't know when Seward died. 4) Marion b. March of 1885 and married someone from around Jacksonville, Fl. I have been told. 5) Samantha Jane b. July of 1889 m. David Curry from Ga. around 1912. Samantha moved back to Berrien Co., Ga. where both of her parents had lived prior to moving to Fl. between 1885 & 1889. She died in Oct. of 1973 she is my Ggrandmother. 6)John P. b. 1891 lived in the Polk Co., Fl. area all of his life (I think). 7) Grover Cleveland (Cleve) b. Nov. 1892 lived in the Polk Co., Fl. area all of his life (I think). I remember in the late 60's seeing John (Johnny as my granny, his sister, call him)& Cleve one time in Lakeland, Fl. and one time when they came to S. Ga. to visit my ggrandmother. Any one who is a descendant of any of these people or has information on any of them I would love to hear from you. I know my Ggrandmother's family is not the only surviving descendants of William H. & Mary Jane Candance Creel. Rhonda
The Burval/Eichelberger book of Madison Co. Cemeteries is available online. I don't know how to access just the book, but you can find the people by going to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Enter your surname, then click FL and start the search. If they are in this book it will appear as an entry with the cemetery name (along with all other "hits"). Click on Full and the whole cemetery will appear and you can use your search to find the listing. Leslie
Please, if you need a Cenus lookup, give me as many names as possible that might be in the household. It will help me get the right family for you. Thanks Bill willbees@mediaone.net
Hello all. O.k. who needs help? Do you need some research and no access to a genealogy department? I'm making a trip to the genealogy dept at the main Jacksonville library - maybe the weekend of the 20th, but more likely the following weekend. My wife and I will check as many requests as we can. The library has the Fla Death Index, Census Reports for most, if not all states and the Biographical Listing of Florida Civil War Soldiers (and many others but I'm most familiar with that one). Please provide me with as much detail as possible on what you want checked with full names, county and approx dates if possible. Yes, I know we'll get swamped and may not be able to get to them all, but I will do as many as possible. I do have some Madison county data at home if this will help anyone: 1850 census and cemetery listings from four or five different cemeteries. So many people have helped me, I like to help in return whenever possible. A couple of you asked me to post my responses to this question here they are. Since I found an earlier Court Record threatenaing to sell 100 acres of Zachariah's land to recoup 72 1/2 cents in past due taxes, the first one seems most likely. Thanks to you all who responded. Since I didn't ask firs, I did not include your names but I appreciate the assistance. Posted before Lovet Rives, Esq. >>by Zachariah Judkins" Response 1: Anyone have any idea what this transaction might be about? The "sorrell" horse refers to its color. Sorrells are a dark red, with a red or flaxen(white) mane and tail. The white streak down the face is also called a blaze, or stripe. $20 was a paultry sum to pay for a horse by today's standard, but in the 1800's it was quite a good price. Probably Lovet Rives, Esq. was a magistrate of some kind, who handled the posting or advertisement for the horse. It was either sold as a settlement of an estate, or it was sold to sold to satisfy a lein in the court. Action was brought by Zachariah Judkins. Response 2: Probably owed the man money so was paying with a horse. Response 3. Probably Mr Judkins found a stray to which he is laying claim.
