    3. Hi everyone, My name is Brenda, and I'm new to the list. I'm hoping someone can help me with a short story of sorts I found in my gggrandfather's bible. Some of if I cannot make out. The story says: 200 feet east of this highway is the tomb of Mary Wyatt Whitaker. Born in Talahassie Flu, 1831.Daughter of Wm. Wyatt, member of convention which gone to state of Flu its first constitution. Mother of first white child born in what is now Sarasota county 1852. 300 yards west of this highway stood her home which was burned by indians 1856, from whom she fled for safety with her child to a Palmetto Bay fort on manaty river. (Not sure of spelling or fort or river). Erected 1936 by Sara De (unable to make out) chapter DAR. I hope someone can help shed some light on this story. Thanks for any help. 1. Re: Page and Brown Family in Madison/Hernando/Polk Counties
    2. William Brown
    3. Just got back from the library. Found more Page family. Marion Washington Page (Josiah's son) was George's Washington Page's father. Marion's brothers: Jackson J. Page, Solomon H. Page, and Ephraim E. Page are also listed in the Biographical Roster of Florida's Confederate and Union Soldiers 1861-1865 (as was Marion Washington Page). Page, Jackson J. born 1844; married Caroline 1880; died 10/15/1906 Pasco Co. Enlisted 1/8/62 in Fernandina. He was wounded in the right shoulder at Chickamauga 1/20/63 and furloughed. Page, Solomon H. born 11/29/46 Madison Co; died 1/15/1916 buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Bartow, Polk Co. Enlisted 5/2/64 at Madison. Solomon Page was the best boxer in Co D. He fought Jim Gibbs, Company C. and won. He was present on the last roll and was paroled 5/15/65 at Madison. He was 5'3", blue eyed, light skin, dark hair. He received a Florida Pension after the war. Page, Ephraim E. Born 1842 enlisted 3/28/61 at Madison. He was transferred to (old) Company H, 1st Florida Infantry 1/28/62 and was probably mustered out 4/6/62. He reenlisted 9/16/62 in Company H, 2nd Florida Cavalry at Jacksonville. He was sick at home since mid 1864 and was paroled at Madison 5/16/65. He was 5'10", hazel eyes, light skin and hair. Marion Washington Page who was wounded in 62 is shown living with Ephraim E. Page in the 1870 Hernando Census. Ephraim was married to Martha C.. Their children were Jeremiah age 4, Joanna C. age 3, James B. age 1, and "Baby" age 4/12. Solomon Page is shown in the Polk County census for 1870 and 1880. In 1880 he is listed with his wife Elizabeth (parents Ireland and SC) and their children Leoca age 11, Bulah age 9, Ida age 3 and Julian age 2/12. John Brown and his wife Mamie Angela Page (Marion's daughter) were also listed in the 1910 Polk Co. census with their children Martin Washinton age 18, Pascal P age 14, Walter P. age 11, William Andrew age 8, J. Archie age 5 and Charles Lee age 2. Bill Brown willbees@mediaone.net

Yon, b. and d. July 8, 1932. I believe he is buried in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Jackson Co. John and Evelyn divorced/separated (?) by 1940. Were they divorced? When? Where? What does J.E. stand for? Before I knew my gr/grandfather Andrew J. Wilson was born in Ireland in 1861 (from what I can tell considering the little I have on him) I used a free database on the internet to find information on Andrew J. Wilson's who fought in the Civil War, found one who seemed to match, and sent to NARA for the info. I have this info which I will send in another mail, but I only WISH this was mine because , wow, it would be so helpful. (If I can't find something on my Andrew J. soon , I may resort to adopting this one into the family.... ) Here is what I did, and what you can do.... (1) Go to American Civil War Research and Genealogy Database at http://www.civilwardata.com/ and click on free demo (I did not pay the $25 fee, I used the free section). Then go down to Personnel , which is free. Then use your surname and first name and I put in NY State as I knew that was where my Andrew J. was. Once you do that all the matches come up, and for me there were 4 Andrew J. Wilsons there, Then you click on the names and see the details. I saw one was from Brooklyn, and so I thought he was a good candidate. (2) I previously had gotten copies of all kinds of request forms from NARA (you might want to read Civil War Records at NARA http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html first, and order a few copies of NATF-80 by emailing them at inquire2@nara.gov tell them what form you want and give them your snail address and they will send them to you free). (3) Fill out the form. You must have complete name, branch of service, state from which he served, year or dates in which he served, union or confederate (if you already know this info skip step 1). It also helps, but you do not have to have unit in which he served, date and place of birth, date and place of death and some other military info. (4) Send the form to the Washington DC address on the form. Send no money. It takes about 3 months and if they find it they write and tell you to send them $10 and they will send you the complete file. (I actually sent in two, as there was one Andrew J. in Brooklyn and one elsewhere in NY, one came back "not found" and I got one, remember what I had previously written about NARA and the 22 minute search, if I still thought that one could have been my Andrew I would have called and questioned that as I had detailed info on him I found on that site). (5) When you get the info, you might get his war record, his pension record, and his widow's pension record. That is what I got, wonderful info, unfortunately its not my Andrew J. Wilson. But if it was, boy, would I be in luck! Here is another site to read up on if you are thinking about doing this.... Finding a Civil War Ancestor http://www.risenblatt.com/genealogy/civilwar.htm Good luck! 2. Kathleen/Robert G. Marsh
    3. Deborah, There has been much written about David Levy Yulee in Florida histories. Briefly, he is said to have been of Portuguese and Jewish descent, born in St. Thomas, the West Indies. He was an early settler in (then) Hernando County, Florida, at Homosassa. His plantation contained about 1,000 acres of cleared land, with a sugar mill, storerooms, and slave quarters. The main house was located on an island in the Homosassa River. A Union force attacked and burned the Yulee mansion and outbuildings during the Civil War, perhaps because supplies such as sugar, syrup, and fruit were known to be sent from there north to Confederate forces There are several manuscripts about David Yulee that I have heard of. One is by James Alderman--"David Levy Yulee, Antebellum Florida Leader, 1810-1866"--Master's Thesis, Chapel Hill, NC, 1946. Another, by Wickliffe Yulee, is "Biographical Sketch of David Yulee." I suspect a copy of that could be found at the State Library of Florida in Tallahassee. You may find more at the Florida State Archives at <http://www.dos.state.fl.us/dlis/barm/fsa2.html#research>. 3. I recently launched a new site, http://www.jodenoy.clara.net/dealers/freebies.htm?fl , that features programs we have found to help us use our computer more efficiently in our research. Including ones to speed up the PC, get faster web access , search 10 search engines at once and a link to Kindred Konnections free genealogy software. All can be downloaded totally free of charge and used without restriction. The number of visitors and positive feedback has encouraged me to develop the site. I have uploaded some more links which include: NETMIND You can either receive notification of any amendments to the web pages you register, or have the amended pages sent to you automatically. Saves hours on line and keeps you totally up to date. GEDCOM VIEWER Gedcom Viewer opens a Gedcom format file, exported from your Genealogy program, and displays the full family single screen, even for hundreds of people. You can display Name, Birthdate, etc., find individuals, calculate and show inbreeding levels, zoom, etc. There is also a link to Dave Wilks' free gedcom server; where you can upload your gedcom. PARISH LOCATOR (approx 1.1mb) Over 15,000 parishes are listed in the United Kingdom and Ireland. For each parish the county and the map reference is given. Counties are identified using Chapman's county codes and we have provided a list of the codes for anyone unfamiliar with them. It is possible using the software to calculate the distance and direction between two given parishes. Also you can list all parishes within a given radius of any parish. An excellent tool for UK research. I hope the site is useful and I welcome any feedback. John Oyston

    3. Can SKS explain how I go about searching for a will in Florida in 1960. I live in Canada and have no experience doing will research. Is there an on line index or is it necessary to hire a researcher? Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance....Donna

    3. I received a mime multi-part msg. It contains several old family photos in JPG, but I can't split the file up or access the individual photos. >From what I have found to read, looks like I'm out of luck. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks Bill willbees@mediaone.net
