There are alot of "Faulkner" place names, around Florida, and I had always assumed (you know what they say about assume) that they were named after Captain James W. Faulkner's Home Guard's--1st Florida Reserves. To read about him visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/~fltaylor/faulkner.html Anyone else? 3. Pam and Everybody, Thanks for the update, Pam! Along w/everybody else, I lobbied for change for a long time, but lost track and forgot to follow up on it. BIRTH RECORDS "FYI": The information below is clipped from the Vital Statistics section of the state's web site <http://www.doh.state.fl.us/>. "... You must explain your relationship to the person whose record you are requesting. By law, birth records can only be issued to the person to whom the record is filed, if at least 18 years old, or a parent, guardian or legal representative or upon court order. We have limited records of Florida births dating from 1865. [Note: VERY limited before 1917--try, but don't get your hopes up. -Brian] The fee for a birth record is $9.00 for one certification and $4.00 for each additional certification of the same record when ordered at the same time. The fee is required for a search of our records and is non-refundable, even if the record requested is not located. In such a case, a certified "not found" statement will be provided. Duplicate copy fees for records "not found" may be refunded if the applicant sends a letter of request. "To order a birth certificate by either mail or fax, provide a signed letter which includes the following information: "1. Information about the person whose record is being requested: full name at birth and any subsequent name change that may have affected the indexing status of the birth record date of birth city of birth or county of birth father's full name and mother's full name, including her maiden surname "2. Information about the person making the request: full name relationship to the person named on the record mailing address telephone number where you can be reached during our office hours "3. Send a check or money order made payable to the "Office of Vital Statistics." Send the information described above along with the fee to Office of Vital Statistics Post Office Box 210 Jacksonville, FL 32231-0042 "4. If you are not sure of the date of the birth, provide a range of years to be searched. An additional fee of $2.00 is required for each additional year searched when included with your original request. Add the extra search fee to your check or money order and indicate the additional years to be searched in your letter. "5. Allow 3 to 4 weeks to receive your request. "6. You may request "RUSH" service RUSH service will is processed within three working days of receipt of your request and mailed by first class mail. If you are requesting "rush" service by mail or fax, you must also include an additional "rush" fee of $10.00 and mark the outside of your envelope or fax "RUSH". If you need even faster service, fax your request to Vital Statistics at (904) 359-6993. You may charge your request to VISA, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. The RUSH fee of $10.00 plus a charge card acceptance fee of $4.50 will be charged to your account for credit card processing." There is similar information on the site concerning death certificates, but they are simpler, because they may be issued to anybody upon request, though the cause of death will be removed except for certain specified requesters. 3. Bruce, The address: Polk County Historical and Genealogical Library, 100 East Main Street, Bartow, FL 33830. It's a fine resource specializing in the Southeast. At one time, it was the only county library in the U.S. devoted entirely to things genealogical. Enlightened county commissioners over the years? You bet! 1. Re: Williams Death Records--and the Redoubtable Dean DeBolt!
    2. Brian E. Michaels
    3. Dean! Just today I've discovered that there's a "Who's Who" of Florida history and genealogy out there silently observing the list: you, Pam Hall, Leslie Maddocks, and who knows who else? You can all blame Leslie for all of this stuff I've been posting. I'd never really thought about joining the Florida list, since I have no Florida ancestors before my father, but Leslie said I ought to hook on, and the rest, as we say, is [genealogy?]. To you listers who may not know Dean, let me recommend him to you as a very knowledgeable and helpful individual. If he were old enough, I'd call him the grand old man of West Florida history and genealogy. Unfortunately, he's younger than I am, so that won't work. But it's always good to hear from him or of him. When he speaks (often hilariously after dinner) the wise among us listen carefully. 1. Sweeney, Wilson dead end
    2. Charlene Newell
    3. Dear cousins, I am going on an Easter break for two weeks, but then, would like to try again with my dead ends in Apalachicola Peter Sweeney was in 1850 Franklin Co census (age 35) with wife Mary (age 33), both from Ireland, and son Thomas, age 8, born Florida. Later (1890's) I find some Sweeney folks in Escambia Co and Columbia Co. Don't know if there is a connection. Anyway, then I have Catherine Sweeney, GGgrandmother, mother of Nellie Wilson, born 1879, in Apalachicola. So Catherine has a possible age to be sister of Thomas? But where did she come from? Or better, where did Peter and family go? Catherine Sweeney was the 2nd wife of John (Jack) Wilson, and had three children with him: Nellie, Emma, and Eddie, all born in Apalachicola. He later married Lousia Levy and had several other children. Don't know who his first wife was. He was born in Florida, Family history says born in Apalachicola, parents killed, adopted by other family. Any ideas???? Regards, Charlene

    1. General Information
    2. I just wanted to make a couple of comments. 1 - Be aware of the fact that there are many mistakes in the Florida Vital Records death index. Several of the pages were not shipped with the orders and they have not (or will not) furnished the libraries with these additional pages. Also, the sex and race categories are not always correct. I have seen whole pages where everyone is listed as a black male. Yesterday I found in 1949 a Calvin B. as a white female and in 1951 a Catherine C. listed as a black male. Those are easy to determine as incorrect; however, if the name matches don't discount it as being the correct record because the race isn't the same. 2 - I own the 1885 Florida State Census index and will do limited lookups on specific names, including first name. Hopefully, not Smith and Jones. 3 - There have been some changes in the accessibility of birth records. The first part will not help us at the present time but it won't be long. "If the person listed on a certificate is over 100 years old (very few available for this time frame), a certified copy may be issued to anyone completing an application and paying the required fee. Also,if the registrant listed on the birth certificate is deceased and a certified copy is requested by the registrant's spouse, child, grandchild, sibling or the legal representative of any of these, it may be issued as long as the applicant can provide a certified copy of the registrant's death certificate." Box 1976, Palatka 32178-1976 (904-329-0330). Yep, still in Palatka and planning to be buried here (no rush, though). Still at the college, still curator of the Florida Collection, still mean as a snake, etc., etc.... 2. I see all these people getting all this great info and I'm wondering if this kind person provding all the info is the same one who was going to look up a death for a Phillip Reimenschneider. I lost some of my e-mail -- actually A LOT of my e-mail because of stupid human error and I don't know if my info may have been in there. Maybe I missed something -- maybe not. Just checking. 3. Jean and Everyone, The State Archives, now that the 1935 census is on microfilm, will not search it--even with a street address. Sorry for the outdated information. I spoke with Mr. Boyd Murphree of the Archives staff this morning. One would have to hire a private researcher to search the film at the Archives, same as at the libraries that hold the films. He has a list of independent researchers available for hire which he'll send if you'll e-mail your snail address to him at the address in the header above. If someone has easy access to the LDS FHC catalog, would he or she verify whether the 1935 FL STATE census is also available at local LDS family history centers and post the information and film-number list-wide? (Thanks!) Oh, by the way--the 1935 census is on thirty rolls of 35mm microfilm. It can be purchased from the Archives at $20 per individual roll (which may be cheaper than hiring a researcher for a given county). Allow 2-4 weeks for duplication, but it's usually faster than that. Your local library or society can buy it for $604 total. The Putnam County Society and Library just shared the cost and bought it as a memorial to our society's recently deceased treasurer, but we have no one available to do searches in it. As to the relatively new index to the 1885 Florida STATE census (which was patterned after the 1880 US census), Mr. Murphree has that at the Archives and will copy the entries for a single surname for 25 cents per page. Query him by e-mail as above, and he'll check and tell you how much to send for the copies. Both of these state censuses are packed with lots of invaluable information--enjoy! Hope this helps! --Brian ************************************************************************ Jeaninfl61@aol.com wrote: > > Hi, I noticed you said the Fl.
