    1. Re: FLORIDA-D Roll Call
    2. Hello, List, I am trying to find a marriage license or census report on Alonzo, Lonzo or Lon Davis to Frankie Lilly Milam. Family information says they married in Bartow, Polk Co, FL on June 06, 1906. I know that Grandma Frankie had relatives that lived in Bartow at the time, by the name of Anderson. This is my great grandmother (my grandfather's mother and father.) My grandfather died in 1982 so the information went with him. I live in Illinois with absolutely no way of getting to Florida to do a physical search of records. If I can help with info from IL I will. We have a great library here that has tons of information (except on this !! LOL) Thank you to anyone who may be able to help. Debby Davis Lantz

    3. Thanks to all who responded. I can understand how certain birth records could be considered confidential (e.g., unwed mothers, adoptions, etc.) However, it is unfair to make all birth records inaccessible for genealogical research. Not surprisingly, the rules vary from state to state. For example, in Connecticut, all records of vital statistics, including births, are open for research to any member of a legally incorporated genealogy society. Not looking for a reply. I've had several "private" queries about this, so I'll post it. Do forgive the apparent commercialism (which it isn't, because the book was a "volunteer thing" which benefits our local Archives. I don't make anything from it.) The book is THE RIVER FLOWS NORTH: A HISTORY OF PUTNAM COUNTY, FLORIDA (512 pp., hardcover, illus.) It was published in 1986 by the Putnam County Commission and the PC Archives & History Commission. There were 3,500 copies and it's nearing "out-of-print" status. I doubt that there'll be a reprinting or another edition for a number of years, since it cost the county $70,000+ to print it. It has been closely held by the county commission and is generally available only from the clerk's office, one art shop, and one bookstore. Andrea's Bookstore, 308 S. Highway 19, Palatka, FL 32177 (904-325-2141) [e-mail: <andrea@gbso.net>] has it and apparently ships it frequently. It sells for $25; tax and shipping make it $29.50 total. She takes e-mail orders using the major cards (even in Palatka!). As to an autograph, that's easily accomplished, since she's less than a half-mile from my office. She generally keeps some autographed ones, but I stop by whenever she has a request for a "personalized" signature. If you really want one, order it and have her hold it for a signature. Then e-mail me your instructions. I aim to please and I work cheap.... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The other book that listers are asking about is FLORIDA VOTERS IN THEIR FIRST STATEWIDE ELECTION: MAY 26, 1845. It is currently out of print, but I'm working on a revised second edition which should be out this summer. That's why I was in Tallahassee last weekend (to see the original sheets at the Archives and to see Bob Davis at the TGS workshop on Saturday.) The new edition will correct the omission of a Leon County precinct from the index in the first edition, correct the spelling of some misread names, and add an index to the Armed Occupation Act records of the early 1840s. The new edition, like the old one, will be available from the Florida State Genealogical Society. The old one was about 120 pp. and $20--don't yet know what the 2nd ed. will have to be; FSGS will decide, sell, ship, etc. It was another volunteer effort, so I have no financial interest in it, either. By the way, if anyone knows of an error in the first edition, e-mail it to me post-haste so I can check it out and correct it. Enough! "The rest is silence." --Hamlet and B. Michaels

    2. William Brown
    3. Hello all, was just informed by Kathleen, a fellow lister that the 1880 Pasco County census lookup I asked for earlier would have to be Hernando. Seems Pasco wasn't formed from Hernando yet. So here goes. Please, anyone with access to the 1880 Hernando census. Brown family - mother Alexandra (or similar spelling), John about age 11, Brazilla (or similar name) female and possibly additional siblings. I know Brown is a very common name, but if someone could go to the trouble of checking, it would help me tremendously. Thanks. Bill willbees@mediaone.net

    3. Liz, Putnam County is surrounded by Clay, St. Johns, Volusia, Marion, Alachua, and Bradford Counties. Palatka is on US 17 where it crosses the St. Johns River. It's 28 miles SE of St. Augustine, 55 miles S of Jacksonville, 55 miles NW of Daytona Beach, 44 miles E of Gainesville, 45 miles NE from Ocala.... We're in a triangle formed by Gainesville, Jacksonville, and Daytona Beach. We have a Holiday inn, a Best Western, the Minute Maid B&B recently seen in a national orange juice marketing contest, and other less-well-known accommodations. You can get here from practically anywhere by bus, boat, car, (small) plane, or train. We'd be happy to have you join us on May 8. If you've heard Sandy Luebking before, you know what a dynamo she is--and if you haven't, just trust me. Nora and I drove 100 miles to the Orlando area to see her again last winter. 1. Re: New to lsit/Death index for 1960's?
    2. Brian E. Michaels
    3. Donna, If it's the right hit, Jim was born 23 March 1886 and died in West Palm Beach. Have you gotten a death certificate or an obituary? Either might help narrow your search. Once you have the death cert. and know the funeral director and the place of burial, either or both might prove helpful. A city directory search for West Palm Beach could give you an address for the 1935 STATE census, and the point at which Lillie is no longer listed w/Jim or he becomes a "wid." entry can narrow the search still further. (Are you aware that there are a Palm Beach and a West Palm Beach as well as Palm Beach County--three different record venues? SSI says Jim d. WEST Palm Beach.) Do you know whether Lillie drove a car? FL driver license records might help, depending on a lot of factors, but they're public records. Have you tracked Harry? Does he have descendants who might know anything of Jim/Lillie? SSI lists 8 CA Harry Websters, 2 in LA, one born too late (1917). The other was b. 1881, good likelihood on date, but had IOWA SS card. Have you any sources to find survivors? Sometimes family letters or diaries or Bibles may reveal in-laws' and spouses' deaths, of course. HELP! ANYBODY IN/NEAR WEST PALM have or know of a cemetery survey or index that might help us find Jim & Lillie? Donna, I'd be glad to try to help w/death records if you can narrow the search a bit further. Yes, there are marriage indexes in each county pre-1927 and statewide after 6 June 1927. The marriages statewide are on fiche with the death and divorce records. It might also be safe to check for a divorce; many "widow" and "widower" listings from earlier, more "sensitive," years were the result of divorce, not death. Probably not in this case, but... SSI shows one Florida Lillie Webster who d. 1980 and was about correct age. --Brian Michaels ******************************************** Tom & Donna Cino wrote: > > Hello list, > I have been lurking in the background for a bit now, and this is my first posting. Bowen, listed as registered voter in first FL election in 1845 in Madison County, Precinct #3 , listed in the Seminole War roster and a carpenter in Santa Rosa County, FL 1850 Census, and fought for the CSA in Florida 3rd Inf. 3. Philip Fraser was a lawyer from PA practicing in Duval Co before the War between the States. He married into the old Fla Dewees family and had a number of children. I recall that some of the children are in the Dewees family plot in the Old City Cemetery. His house appears on the early maps of Jax which had belonged to the deceased husband of his wife. .He sided with the Union during the War and the family was forced to leave, and spend some time in the North until the War was over. After the War the family came back to Jax, since his wife's family were still there, and he was appointed a Federal judge. Eventually the family left again for the North where Judge Fraser died, I am told. My interest is in the Dewees family and related families, so I have some info on the Judge Philip Fraser family. 3. Does anyone have access to the 1880 Pasco Co census? I have a very difficult lookup if anyone is up to it. John Brown's family was living there before and after the 1880 census. John would have been about 11 years old. He had a sister named Brasilla or Brazilla. His mothers name was Alexandra or close to that spelling. He had at least one brother in the family. Brown is a common name but I doubt Pasco was too large in 1880. Thanks. Bill willbees@mediaone.net
