These are also my Burney ancestors... Arthur, Ellis, Willis, Richard, Harris, Guilford... They all had land in the FLA panhandle area. Somehow they are involved with the other surnames I have noted below in my tagline. I think I have seen the Isreal Beard name before but I can't remember where.... Tonia, Someone said they think the idea is great and pointed out that permission needs to be obtained. That is why I am suggesting that everyone who includes anything on their page should make a statement clarifying it. I found this which I think I will modify to include Gen./ Hist. Socs. I am going to put it in my disclaimer on the page as well as to include it with anything I put on the page or in the archives. *****Copying of the files within by non-commercial individuals and libraries is encouraged. Lynda, Sorry, there is neither grave record nor probate proceeding of any type for Timothy Wightman. I'll check the land records at the courthouse when I can get there--perhaps in a couple or three days. The minor good news is that the copy of the plat sketch mentioned in the book and a previous posting is made. I hope to pick it up tomorrow and get it out then or on Wednesday. Hang in there! --Brian **************************************************** Brian E. Carol, I hope you got an earlier reply telling you that I had not found your Burney/Beard connection but had queried two well-known and highly competent friends on your behalf. I can't find it, now. In any Caesar, one response has come in: "I checked Virgil White's index to U. S. volunteers in the Indian Wars. Either one Arthur Burney served several times from 1817 to 1838 or several men of the same name served, including one as a captain. I found no reference to Israel Beard in anything. Virgil White's indexes to the pensions turned up neither man except for a Arthur Burney's widow Rosada (died 5 May 1903 in Texas) drew a pension for the Indian Wars service of a man by that name. No indexes are available to men or heirs who received bounty land in federal land states like Florida (Texas is not a federal land state) although those records can be searched by writing to the National Archives, Washington, DC 20408. Volunteers, militia, and regulars all qualified for bounty land." I'll let you know if the other KS can help. Linda, being of severely limited mental capacity, I clicked on the wrong button and sent this too soon, before it was finished. Sorry for the repetition.... I don't know "what-all" is on it, but the Herald has a web site at www.herald.com. On the obits, though, before I asked the Herald, I'd get in touch w/the genealogy dept. at Miami-Dade Publib, 101 West Flagler St, Miami FL 33130-1523 (305) 375-5580. If they couldn't help, I'd ask how to contact Ann Josberger McFadden, who has a massive computerized database. Hello list; Still on the trail of that elusive Great Aunt Lillie. I have found 2 cemeteries in Riviera Beach where she could be buried, but can find no listing through the yellow pages on line. Does anyone know the addresses for the'Royal Palm Memorial Gardens' or the 'Glenwood Memorial Gardens'? Also could not find the Crematory in Delray Beach where uncle Jim was cremated so have written to the 4 listed in the yellow pages. Does anyone have a death certificate from the 1960's they can look at and tell me if which address on it belongs to the deceased? Thanks everyone...Donna in B.C., Canada :0)
Dear FL-L Researchers, I have learned so much on this list, lately. Really glad I rejoined! Could some kind soul tell me how to place an ad in the Miami Herald News? I would like to place a "missing person's" ad. The webpage only invites "personals" type adverstising. Does anyone have access to the Miami Herald Newspaper address, or phone number? Also, how does one find out if the Miami Herald has an archive of their obituaries? Would it be obtainable through inter-library loan? Thanks for any help... Linda

HOMESTEAD ENTRY ACT The Act of May 20, 1862, authorized unrestricted settlement on public lands to all settlers, requiring only residence, cultivation, and some improvement to a tract of 160 acres. Any person was eligible who was head of a family or had reached the age of 21, who was a citizen or intended to become one, and who did not own as much as 160 acres. After living on the land and farming it for 6 months, he could buy the homestead at $1.25 an acre. But after 5 continuous years, he could apply for and receive a patent or title to the 160 acres for a filing fee of $15. I downloaded this from the GLO (Govt. Land Office - Eastern States Bureau) land patent site some time ago. The description of the way the patents were bought, and under what authority is on the GLO site but it takes a while to find them. If anyone would like my saved file I can send it to you but didn't want to send it to the whole list. For those that prefer to search the site you should start at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ Anne Futch
I am having trouble interpreting a Spanish Land Grant....... It is found in the U.S. WPA, Spanish Land Grants in Florida, Volume 2: Confirmed Claims, A-C (Bulow, Charles W., Heirs of). John Russell was my fifth great-grandfather and I would like to know exactly where the land was located that he traded/sold? If anyone has access to these WPA volumes and could be of assistance I would sure appreciate it. Lynn
Bill and All, I think you mean Alvie L. Davidson, FLORIDA LAND: RECORDS OF THE TALLAHASSEE AND NEWNANSVILLE GENERAL LAND OFFICE, 1825-1892 (pub Heritage Books, 1989). It's available in a number of public libraries, including the FSU Libraries, The State Library of FL, Miami-Dade, Tampa, Jacksonville, etc. (and my house, if all else fails). One should also check the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office, for records of lands purchased at the Tallahasseee Land Office. The records may be searched on the internet, where excellent abstracts and scanned photocopies of the actual patent deeds may be obtained. I don't have the URL handy, but search for Bureau of Land Management or General Land Office. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Brooks <bbrooks@fda.net> To: <FLORIDA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 04, 1999 1:52 AM Subject: Re: Leon County Property Records > I have some that I copied out of a book at our Carlsbad Library here in > California, we have a very good Genealogical collection here that see a > lot of use. Sounds like the 1862 Homestead Act under which so much land out West was acquired by settlers... One of my kin in Madison County, FL, got some of his land the same way. It says under "Authority", May 20 1862: Homestead Entry (12 Stat.392) Does anyone know what that indicated ? Under what circumstances ? Any info at all will be appreciated. Emma in NM
