Sorry this isn't really related to FL, but it is a genie question.... A lookup volunteer found my Phillips family on a 1889 Wexford County (Cadillac MI) Plat Book. My stupid question today is, what info is in a Plat Book? All she listed was their names and the page number. What all am I missing? I am looking for someone who has done research on the Cox name. I am looking for the mother or father of James Gilbert Cox born April 11,1880.
John, not only would the PC archives want your material, but I'd appreciate permission to print some of it in the Putnam County Genealogical Society's QUARTERLY JOURNAL. "'ow 'bout it?" As to NUCMC (pronounced "nuck'- muck"), it is the NATIONAL UNION CATALOG OF MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS, and in my always humble opinion it is a wonder of the modern world. As you know, many times family letters, diaries, etc., end up hundreds or thousands of miles from the areas where they were created or to which they refer. NUCMC is a massive indexed (by name, location, etc.) catalog of where they went! There are hardcopy volumes (by year of accession/report) from 1959 to 1993. The years from roughly 1986 to date are accessible online through an electronic form linked to the NUCMC home page. There's an FAQ and even info to let you reach the team leader w/questions or problems. Point your browser to http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html And watch for an upcoming article by Sandra Luebking in the Federation of Genealogical Societies' excellent FORUM (an abbreviated version will be out in PCGSQJ later this year--I just can't share it yet). Since the printed volumes of NUCMC run about $110, look for this source in very large or university libraries. They may have some limited access to a CD-ROM version, too. After you try it, if you have questions, I'll TRY to answer them, but if I'm an expert on anything, it isn't NUCMC (beneficiary and admirer, yes; expert, no). Since you'll be at P.K. Yonge in May (I'll miss you--I'm speaking at NGS Richmond and then researching in AL and SC), you may want to know that NUCMC is alive and well and living in the same building in Gainesville. Ain't that niiiice? Enjoy! Hope this helps.... --Brian
Lee, It really frustrates me when I get a request for help and can't do anything, but I'm in Palatka (Putnam County, FL) and we're as dry as you are. Sue Ann Sanders, to whom I was sending the "stuff" is in Wisconsin, which everyone knows is frozen year-round, so I was concerned about HER mail-carrier. She may be able to help, though. She was born in Florida, so she was bound to be pleasant and helpful, as everyone also knows. And she's both--can you send us at least a bucket of snow, Sue Ann? Oh, oh, this is an off-topic message--am I bad? --Anonymous in Palatka <grin> *************************************************** Lee Y. Yo, John! 1- Have you checked NUCMC for references to either Washington or Taylor or diaries/journals by or referring to them? If not, I'd sure try that.... 2- Who was the "state researcher" and what is the title of the report? I have a contact in Tallahassee who may be able to help on Washington/Taylor, but I missed him and left a phone-mail message. Should hear from him Monday. 3- May I suggest that, since your grandfather and other family were "from here," the Putnam County Archives (PO Box 1976, Palatka, FL 32178-1776) would be anxious to have either the records you mention or--at the least, copies of them? 4- As the CB fanatics used to say, "Come back...." --Brian ****************************************** > John Brown wrote: > > Hi all. > This is a copy of a letter I sent to Brian. Tamara, James Booth died in Pinellas County (St. Pete) in May of 1965. His death certificate is filed in the FL State Bureau of Vital Statistics Office (PO Box 210, Jacksonville 32231-0042). They'll send you a copy for $5 and a letter giving his name, date (5/65), your name and address, and these numbers: Volume 2714, Certificate #30477. When you have a death date, the Pinellas County Library System should be able to get you an obit through direct request or Interlibrary Loan channels from your local library. If you really want to find his records--if they exist--you might query the Pinellas County Bar Association to see if they know which firm, if any, they went to--or whether perhaps his firm still exists and still has them in storage. I tried to get to a Martindale-Hubbell Directory from the early 60s, but the University of Florida Law Library's space problem has denuded their shelves prior to the 90s editions. You might query the University of Georgia at Athens or the Law Library at FSU in Tallahassee. If they have one, they can get you a quick and concise bio sketch from it. The Florida Bar in Tallahassee (650 Apalachee Pkwy, Tallahassee, FL 32399-2300) will check their records for you, but they need a written request (no charge!) telling them what you want ("all available information of record"). They'd like to have his registration number, but if you don't have it, ask 'em anyway. The ABA claims to have nothing and says they wouldn't give it out if they did. So there now, too. (Yanh, yanh, yanh!) [Can anybody else help? Thanks!] Good luck! --Brian Michaels ******************************************* Tamara Bowden wrote: > > Does anyone know where I can find the records of someone who was a > lawyer in St. Petersburg? Shirley, May I suggest that there may be an easier way to get the information--and other interesting things--on Sim Johnson? At this point, the prison folks are not likely to want to help, even if you know where he was imprisoned, and unless the Ft. Myers library has an obituary index in which to look up victim Henderson, they and the newspapers probably won't be much interested, especially since you're not sure when it all took place. I would check in or query the Clerk of the Circuit Court's criminal docket indexes in Lee County (formed in 1887 from Monroe) as a first approach. That MAY lead you to the criminal case files, which SHOULD give you names and the dates of all of the major activities concerning the killing, the case, the imprisonment, etc. Then, once you have a narrower time-span, the newspapers, the librarians, and the prison recordkeepers might be more interested in your problem. Good luck! -Brian Michaels ******************************************************* Shirley Hale wrote: > > To the list, > > Okay this is my Ggrandfather. Shirley, I too had to a similar need and contacted the Lee County Courthouse Clerk at (941) 335-2283. My gggrandfather was murdered in Key West in 1891 and the accused were put up for trial in Fort Myers in 1895. I was able to get a copy of the Court Clerk's notes from the trial. This also happened to be the first murder trial in the new Lee County Courthouse. Hope this helps. Cheryl Sanchez-Sivers Searching: Mira, Martinez, Cepero, Sanchez
Sue Ann, If I can find some stamps, the FL house and senate composite photos for 1907, -09, -15, and -21, plus two copies of the FT-U obit, plus two bio-source entries will leave sunny Palatka at 6 p.m. today. Hope the post office's four-wheel drive can get across the permafrost and through the snow and hoarfrost before August. Enjoy! --Brian
To the list, Okay this is my Ggrandfather. My father told this story after my mom passed away about his grandfather. Sim Johnson supposedly killed a well known citizen of Ft Myers by the name of Henderson and was sent to prison(don't know what year) in the late 1800s to early1900s. He never came back to his family which lived in Arcadia at the time. I have two questions. How do I go about finding any newspaper articles about this so I can find out his full name and where or how do I find out if he died in prison or was released? Maybe this is a part of a family tree that some might not want to look for but I am trying to find out his legal name so I can go from there. All I have is his birth date. Born in Ga. in 1846. Thanks for any help ..........................Shirley Hale
Here's something Brian E. Michaels told me when I was looking for a lawyer relative.... His wife was Caroline Rebecca Templeton and they had their family in Hawthorne, Alachua County, Florida --area. My Grandfather William Beckham Adkins was born in Hawthorne and died there in 1952.
