    3. You can go to your local library and ask for a Photocopy ILL. Most Genealogical librarians cannot look up obits in the larger libraries. Ours in Tampa does not. Put in the name of the local paper and put in date of death. Ask for an Obituary/Death notice for 5 days after date of death. Don't be surprised if there is just a small funeral notice, most families just get put in the paper what the paper offers for free. Cost will be $2.50 (here in Tampa) to $10 (WV). Some libraries especially the College ones will put a large cost on them to discourage the ILL. But if you need, you need it. 1. A request....
    2. Brian E. Michaels
    3. "Listers, Genies, Newbies, lend me your ears!" (Shakespeare?) As some of you know, I really do enjoy helping folks track Florida ancestors--perhaps because I wish I had some. But... As some of you also know, our genealogical world deals in three primary currencies: names, dates, and places. When posting requests on lists, we can usually increase our chances of a getting a "hit" by giving some parameters to the information sought. There've been a number of folks recently who, apparently having just heard of certain indexes and censuses and being used to our modern Internet search engines, apparently imagine that there is a large, unified, single-series, on-line finding aid for everything. I wish it were so. However,... A request for the death of John Q. Doe is not readily "do-able," I fear, if there is absolutely nothing to tie it to some time frame. The index covers more than 120 years and consists of hundreds or thousands of separate microfiche, mostly indexed by individual years. As much as I would like to help, in light of the recent volume of requests, I simply cannot afford the time involved to tilt with undated windmills. That's why I never respond to list-wide requests for "all info on the Florida Joneses or Smiths, or Browns, or the entire Lipschitz family." My only other hope in this plaintive request is that you'll let us who try to help know that you got the information we sent. E-mail has no return receipts (that I know of), so we don't know whether the information got to you or is floating somewhere in the great void of cyberspace. No need to send money--or even thanks--but do let us know that you got the info so that we can clear it from our computers. Many thanks! -Brian Michaels ******************************************************

    3. Bill, Success! (Even an old blind hog, they say, finds an acorn now and then.) Your great-great-grandmother is listed as Tobetha (w/an "e") Alexander, d. Pasco County. She's in Vol 380 at Cert 8081. 3. The Genie Angel here (see, I like it!). <grin> By the way, since you have the Blanton death dates, I'd check for obituaries in a newspaper covering Taylor County in 1905. And if they died in an epidemic, I'd guess flu or yellow fever--I'm not aware of that particular one. In any case, though, newspapers then as now printed that kind information. I'd predict a very good chance of success, but who knows? Again, good luck! --Brian

    3. Yes, an angel--that's just what I am! Now if I just could convince my wife, daughters, and college students of that.... On the other hand, if I really were an angel, I probably wouldn't have to tell you that only three Blantons appear in the FCDI 1877-1916. A.L. Blanton d. Madison Co. 1911; Ava Blanton in 1902, and a stillbirth in 1916 are the only others. Nor is Addie Matthis Blanton Chandler to be found. Well, I suppose it's also helpful to know where something is not.... Sorry, though. --Brian *************************************************** Jeaninfl61@aol.com wrote: > > HI Brian, > I need a death lookup on the following: > Joshua James BLANTON, died Feb 13, 1905, Taylor Co. 3. Jennifer, Nineteen sixty-five was a bad year for Florida Sherwoods, I guess. Eight of them passed on--six in SW FL, one in Volusia County (Daytona Beach area), and your Uncle Clarence. He is listed as Clarence Beauford (rather than Buford) Sherwood, Sr. He died in Dade County in July of 1965. The day is not given in the index in that period, but the certificate will have it. His record is filed in Vol 2718, Cert 32380. As I indicated, we don't yet know enough about Alma to check more than thirty years. When you've talked to your father (and perhaps that living Clarence Sherwood that I suggested), I'll try to find Alma if you find she died in Florida. Good luck! As to a copy of the obituary, my experience with librarians is that they prefer that such requests come in by Interlibrary Loan from your local library. Any list-member librarians want to confirm or correct that for us? --Brian Michaels ************************************ Timothy Braswell wrote: > > Thanks, Brian. 1. Native American Ancestors
    2. This is most likely an exercise in futility, but I have a great grandmother whom familylegend says was adopted as an infant. One of the stories is that she was adopted in Maine and taken to Monticello Florida by Levi Harris and Dorothy Bozeman Harris. She was born about 1832 as best we can determine. Her name was Tamzy Harris. I've been told that various Native American languages do not use Z's so might narrow it down that way. Of course I have no way of knowing if that was an Indian name or one given to her by the Harrises. If anyone has any clues as to tribe, nation, etc. I would love to hear them..Even if anyone finds a clue to Levi Harris in Maine, we are pretty sure he was in Florida by 1835. Thanks , Emma in NM

    3. Is anyone working on a WOOD or FILLYAW family in Florida or South Georgia. Am trying to help a friend with his ancestors. Lucy Fillyaw (not positive of the spelling) married a William Randolph Dawson. Said to be from Astor, FL. Jefferson Patrick Wood,Sr. married a Hunnicut; son Louie Lester Wood (recently deceased) married a Frances Lee Barfield. Believe the Barfields to be from South Georgia as well. The Fillyaw name is thought to be French therefore the spelling could have been different than what I have. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Maureen

    3. Louise, It begins in 1877 and the first section covers 1877-1916; the second series is 1917-1922; thereafter, for a while, at least, it's year-by-year until much later. The holdings from 1877-1916 are not really numerous enough to get excited about, but--like all potential sources--should not be passed over. These records are not exhaustive; some people from the 1930s and '40s sometimes do not appear, and I'm certain that someone was missed earlier this year. It is also well to remember that death certificates are secondary records and full of "don't know's" as well as misinformation. I've seen only one in which the deceased was his own informant, and that was a special case.... 3. There are at least 42 dead Clarence Sherwoods at rest in the United States. There's apparently at least one live one in Florida. Why don't you call CLARENCE SHERWOOD, 3605 NE 32nd Ave, FT. LAUDERDALE 33308 at 954-630-9829 and see what happens. He could, if he's the right person, either give us direction or answer questions that would save us all a lot of time. I'll check for the dead, but the living are often more helpful. Let me know what happens. Good luck! --Brian ***************************************** Timothy Braswell wrote: > > Thanks, Brian. 1. How to locate records of lawyers, physicians, 1800's.?
    2. Bruce Cardner
    3. I have tried without success to locate some sites which might give me information on an ancestor b. 1815 who was a lawyer and a physician. He practiced both successfully, then returned to the Methodist church as an itinerant preacher until his death. That is where I got this information on him. Not sure where he practiced each profession, but it was FL, GA, or SC. I lost him on the 1850 census, so I am trying other means to find him. Church records say he "successfully practiced before the bar for years." "He also practiced as a physician successfully." Is there any source for these professions that far back. I saw one site that only went to 1890. Too late for him. Do any colleges keep records that far back? I know he attended Cokesbury College in Abbeville, SC, at one time. Their records are no more. I have his ancestors way back, but I am trying to find more about him. He sounds very interesting. His name was Rev./ Dr. William E. Collier, b. north GA, died Fort Myers, FL. Thanks for any help. The family of one my ancestors was kidnapped from a farm near St Augustine in 1802 by Miccosukee Indians, who took the captives west to "near the Gulf of Mexico". They were ransomed in 1803, after one son had been scalped & a daughter impregnated by the medicine man. What would be the best source for finding out more about the Miccosukees?
