    1. Re: FL Death Lookups: McCarty
    2. Brian E. Michaels
    3. Kathy, they go back to 1877, but the holdings of a forty-year period fit on just 10 microfiche; a small percentage of the deaths were recorded back then. Sorry, no Sterling McCarty (1877-1916 inclusive) anywhere in Florida, nor any Sterling anybody that might have been a variant or misspelling. --Brian ****************************************************** Kathy Y Jeffers wrote: > > Hello Brian, > I think I missed something but I take it from what I've been reading > that you are doing look-ups in the death index. 1. Re: Florida Death Index--Re Surname Mira
    2. Brian E. Michaels
    3. Cheryl, The only Mira (1877-1916 inclusive) is Manuel Mira, who d. 1913 in Hillsborough Co. (seat: Tampa) in 1913. His death is recorded at vol. 023, cert. 1163. Is he yours? Looking for variant spellings and other other possibilities: there was a Josephine Miranda who died 1903 in Hillsborough, (card & cert. 04281) and there was a ?? Mirabilo ("white female)" who d. there in 1913 (vol. 023, cert. 1349). Have you tried the 1900 and 1910 USPC Soundex for Mira/Valdez/Gonzalez? Also, if you haven't done so, you might check for city directories of Tampa for the search period. You might find her first name if she's listed with her father or either or both of her husbands. And there may be a clue to death year when she drops out if Tampa had yearly or at least frequent directories. Tampa and the Library of Congress probably have some useful holdings. Anyway, Good luck! Anybody in Tampa know the city directory availability? Thanks! --Brian Michaels *********************************************************************************** Casivers@aol.com wrote: > > Brian, > > Would you be so kind as to look up the surname of Mira for me? 1. Re: Thomas C. Hudson
    2. Hello List I have recieved my great grandfather's death certificate from the state and it says he died at the Fla State Hospital eight days after being admitted, on November 30, 1932. No parents names were listed, however we know from the card file at the hospital that his son Joseph H. brought him to the hospital and that there may be a court record in Madison County that would have made Joseph his gardian and given authorization for him to be admitted to the hospital... perhaps a few days or a week prior to him being admitted, possibly around the middle of November. Unfortunately, the hospital destroys all records after seven years, with the exception of the card file. I have asked my Aunt who is 89 years old about this and she says she never heard anything about her grandfather being admitted to the state hospital, but also offered the opinion that people did not talk about those things in front of children in those days. My question is... how would I find out if a record exists of any court proceedings concerning this? Is there anyone in Madison Co. who would do a look up in exchange for me doing a look up of Ga. cenus records or any other info I could help with from Ga.? Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated. Dee

    1. Broward County--Obit
    2. Robert & Dian Epp
    3. Dear Floridians! An obituary search has revealed that Ann EPP was deceased 15 December 1996, probably in Broward County. Her residence was shown as Royal Palm Beach, according to the Sunday-Sentinel of Ft. Lauderdale. However, her SSN record shows that she resided at Loxahatchee, and that her SSN was issued in Illinois. We are hoping that someone in the Broward County area has access to the Sunday-Sentinel and can look-up Ann's obituary (16 December 1996). If you can, please reply directly to <rdepp@crosslink.com> for snail-mail address. Expenses will be gratefully reimbursed. Thanks in advance. Bob Epp, in VA :-}

    1. Tobitha or Tobetha in GA to FL
    2. William Brown
    3. My John Brown's mother was Tobitha or Tobetha. She would have been married to John's father about 1866-1868 in GA. and was born in GA in 1848. When her Brown husband died she married an Alexander. All of her children, including John (1869), Charlie (1873) and probably a W.A. (1881) were born in GA. The family moved to Trilby, Pasco Co., FL about 1888 and moved between Pasco/Hernando/Hillsborough and Polk Co. before settling in Sumter Co where John and his wife are buried. I am trying to find Tobetha's maiden name and the name of her husband, John's father. Anyone out there have a Tobetha or Tobitha Unknown/Brown/Alexander???? Please drop me a line. Thanks. 1. Re: They're Free! Florida Death Index Lookups--But...
    2. Brian E. Michaels
    3. Dear Florida Listers: I'll be glad to check the Florida Death Index for you, but I need some parameters of times of death. The index covers more than 120 years and is not in one long alphabetical sequence. Checking the whole thing for two or three different ancestors would require more time than I can devote to it, especially with the recent/current volume of requests. I WANT to help, but it will help me to help you if you can narrow it down to ten years or so. I can check even if you don't know where the death occurred or may have occurred, but a place can often help us choose the right one out of several identically named individuals. By the way, if you don't want me to copy to the list the information that I find, let me know. I get numerous messages beginning, "I saw your response and wonder if...." Lists, as I understand them and have seen them operate for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and Salt Lake City, are a means of sharing a lot of information in a short time. I have picked up a lot of good information from the queries and responses of others, and have on occasion been able to add another tidbit or two. So I continue to do it that way, but I will of course respect specific requests for private responses. Thanks! --Brian Michaels

    3. Gloria, They will indeed--just ask for the ILL clerk or librarian. It's library shorthand for "Interlibrary Loan," a well-developed and usually effective system for getting through your library all kinds of books and information that are not housed in/at your library. 1. Edge/ Sesson Hall
    2. Mary Ellen Wexler
    3. I have just received, from a very nice man, a copy of the military records of Wm. M. Edge. He is one of the men missing in my group. His wife was Mary Frances and her father's name was Sessons Hall, so someone out there wants some of this info. Hi, cousin!! William was in Co. I (I think) 29th AL. His brother GW Edge was witness to claim he made for pension. He enlisted 1861 at Milton, FL. Mary Frances was born 29 Nov 1849 in Elba, Coffee Co., AL. Her father died about 1880 at Milton Florida and Wm. died 27 Apr 1907, Fulton, Clarke Co., AL. She and Wm. were married 15 Jan 1872. Moved to AL 1889. Will glady send copies to whomever is in need of them. Now I need to find the pension record for this man her pension number is 14839, Clarke Co., AL. If anyone has further info, will greatly appreciate it. 1. STEPHENS of Madison County
    2. Greetings, In the 1900 Cherry Lake Dist., Madison County census, there is a John J. STEPHENS, wife, Sussie and children Easter E. CHANEY, John G. (Chaney or Stephens--unclear), Jesse, Pachayan (F) and William STEPHENS. I believe this is my ggrandfather and his second wife. I have been unable to find his first wife, Elizabeth FOLSOM STEPHENS and believe that she had died about 1891. Family tradition says that she died in the Poor House. Does anyone know of records that might be available for a County Home in Madison or Suwannee Counties. The family had ties to the Branford, Suwannee Co., Cherry Lake, Madison Co., FL and to Quitman, Brooks Co., GA areas. I would appreciate any information or suggestions for searching further for any of the above family. Thanks! Bonnie in Panama City
