    2. Dean DeBolt
    3. I should add that the legislature at one point designated "colleges" calling them academies and envisioned on in east florida and one in west florida, and the law specifies the Suwanee River as the dividing line. Thus the "West Florida Academy" was created in Tallahassee...and if you follow through its "genealogy," it ultimately became FSU. The most common designation for middle Florida that I've seen is the area between the Apalachicola and the Suwanee Rivers. Everything west and east of those physical distinctions were west and east florida. This may be simply because Escambia as one of the first counties created in Florida had as its eastern boundary, the Suwanee River. 3. I guess it is "Location, Location, Location!" <G> From Seminole Indian War Record the following interesting entries: Vol. 4, page 35 Re: Muster Roll of Lieutenant Celestino Gonzalez's Detachment Company of the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade of the Florida Militia ....... Certified a true muster on 25th July 1838 by Celestino Gonzalez, commanding the Company. Station: Pensacola, E.F. Certified true the same day and place by Captain D. H. VINTON, Inspector & Mustering Officer. {note where Pensacola is stated as located here ...} Vol. 5, pp 58-59 Re: Muster Roll of Capt. Elijah Johnson's Company of the 7th Reg., First Brigade of the FL Militia (Enrolled at Tallahassee) Certified a true muster by Capt. Elijah Johnson on 7th August; Station: Camp Harney. [1840] Certified a true muster by J. Green, Lt. Col., 6th Art'y. Commanding the District West of the Suwannee.,Inspector and Muster Office {Lt. Col. Green apparently envisions 2 divisions - East of the Suwannee and West of the Suwannee......} Vol. 6, pp 64-65 Re: Muster roll of Captain Thomas Langford's company of Florida Militia Mounted Volunteers............ By signature on 13 July 1840 at Camp Independence, Madison County, Middle Florida , Capt. Thos. Langford commanding the Company, certified the muster to be true and accurate "in every particular." ............ {As far as Capt. Langford was concerned he was in Middle Florida.....} Vol. 7, page 9 Re: Muster Roll of Capt. George R. McElvy's Company of Regiment of Regiment of Florida Mounted Militia, ...... I certify, on honor, that this Muster Roll exhibits the true state of Capt. George R. McElvy's Company of Florida Mounted Militia for the period herein mentioned that the remarks set opposite the name of each officer and soldier was accurate and just. Signed by George R. McElvy, Capt., Commanding the Company Date: 10 December [1840] Station: Tallahassee, W. Fla {here we are to West Florida, even though most entries indicate Tallahassee as Middle Florida} I could keep pulling the discrepancies of locations and demarcations, not only from the SIW records, but others records as well, but I conclude that in the 1800's, persons were as unsure about "locations" as I am........even the "Map of the Seat of War in Florida" executed in 1839 by order of Brig. Gen. Zachary Taylor to identify the forts and other important locations , is incomplete on many fort locations and names...... I want to thank all the terrific responses I have received on this issue....Each was informative .......I do not think there is an exact answer to my question for the time frame past the Spanish relinquishment of Florida to America...... I had hoped there was an official document on the matter.... Again thank you all...... Deborah

    3. Dean... Every military record I have seen of Florida militia units raised in the 2d Seminole War has the EF, MF designations (if WF was used I haven't noticed it), and the Federal Court in Tallahassee is still known as that of Middle Florida to this day ( http://www.flmd.uscourts.gov/ ). These designations have certainly continued in use... 3. Dear Dean, Thank you for the clarification..... I am working with military, land , and many misc. records that make reference to the "designations" of EF, WF, and MF, and used extensively in those records, but was uncertain what areas/counties were associated with the designations and when ......am trying to marry-up various records in an attempt to sort out my many early FL family groups......too many same names.... 3. I have a map on the lines of East/West Florida prior to 1821, but I need to know what was considered East /West FL after that point. I have info that states that East FL was those areas east of the Suwannee River and everything west was West Florida then I found information stating the line was the Chattahoochee River ..... Then I find reference to Middle FL Is there anyone that can explain the lines and if and when they changed...? Am working with Seminole Indian War records ...... Please respond to the list as this may be of interest to others..... Thank you in advance. Deborah

    3. I recently read in a book on Florida History about the legal description on the dividing line and it was something like certain number of degrees west, etc. But if you will look at this web site of maps you will get a good understanding of the division lines. The East and West FL is the Apalachicola River. http://www.libs.uga.edu/darchive/hargrett/maps/expand.html ===== Alvie L.
