It may be because of Florida's new privacy laws. In Leon County, the Clerk of the Court has restricted access to just about everything & is giving people 60 days (which should be about half over) to send his office a request to remove certain information...including SS numbers, birth dates & marriage dates. As I understand it, individuals must request that their personal information be removed. In our business, I need copies of Notices of Commencement for new homes. Those are also Internet restricted although they can be obtained from the clerk's office for a fee.(Go figure.) This has put a big burden on the clerk's office. Can someone tell me why I cannot access the Florida marriage database project on rootsweb? I used to. Thanks, Brenda
Oh..my goodness...just another way for the government to protect us. If I needed someone to protect my privacy I would not call on the county commissioners of Leon County or Dade County. They are just passing these "feel good" laws and the unlearned are all smiles. When all is said and done there will be just as much identity theft as always. When a person wants to steal my identity or your identity, he or she will not go to the county courthouse and apply for a building person issued by his neighbor..they are too sharp to go that route. It is the folks who toss aside credit card applications into the garbage or throw out their old bank statements will be the ones who will be their own undoings. If I want anyone's Social Security number, current address, or personal information, it is available in a number of places readily available to the general public. I always end with this statement "When will the government outlaw telephone books?" Alvie L. > Subject: [FLORIDA] Newspaper for Seminole County? If you are sure that the obit wasn't in the Orlando Sentinel, then probably the only other place that it might have been posted is in the "Seminole Herald", in Sanford, FL. In 1993, the Seminole Herald was a daily paper, (now it's twice a week). The Seminole Herald is not online. If you have an exact date of death, you could check with the Museum of Seminole County History. They have most years on microfilm. Did you search the "Archives" of the Orlando Sentinel? You can specifically search all years from 1985 to the present. If you find what you want, I think the cost is 2.25 per article, to order it online. Chris Sanford, FL
Noreen, You might also try <http://www.n-net.com/fl.htm> This site does not have web site links and is not listed by county; however, you can use the "find in page" feature under "edit" on your browser menu to search for cities in Seminole County to find the name, address and phone numbers of the available newspapers. Another listing of Florida online newpapers can be found at <http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/usstate/usflorid.htm> The FL Newspaper Project can be found at <http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/flnews/> Hope this helps, Ann Staley, CGRS [CGRS, Certified Genealogical Records Specialist is a service mark of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license by Board-certified associates after periodic competency evaluations.] * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Don't miss the 26th Annual Florida State Genealogical Society Conference! I found that my cousin died Feb, 24, 1993, in Seminole County, but I do not know exactly where. There was not an obit in the Orlando Sentinal. Would there be a newspaper for towns in Seminole county? The name is Mary L. VanLeer. Thanks. Noreen in Oregon
