    1. [FLORIDA] Names on the 1870 census
    2. Sandra Willis
    3. I sent the below message this morning, but find that I was not subscribed. Don't know if it was posted or not. If this is a duplicate please accept my apology. Hello: As I was transcribing an 1870 census for Leon County, Florida I realized that there were a lot of African - Americans who moved into Leon county after the civil war. They came mostly from North and South Carolina and Georgia. I began to wonder how people searching for their family history would be able to use this information to search back further. In the 1860 census almost all of these people were enumerated on a slave schedule and had no surnames. After the war suddenly they all developed surnames. My question is has anyone ever done a study on where and how they got these surnames? I would very much like to understand this process. Was there a place for these people to register when they took up residence? Any ideas as to where I might look for information on this topic? TIA Sandra Willis [email protected]

    3. This should help you to get the answer to all your questions. First you should send $5 to the Florida State Vital Records Office, P O Box 210, Jacksonville, FL 32231 and get the death record. If he had children, and wife was already deceased then that child will be named as "informant" on the death record. Next I can give you the name of a person who can get his obituary from the local Brooksville, FL newspaper. He has a small fee but he is very good and will search for it. If he does not find it, there will be no charge. Chris Welch [email protected] You might also write to the Hernando County Clerk of Circuit Court, in Brooksville, FL to find of he left a will. You can search for their courthouse address on the internet. http://www.google.com The best search engine on the net. Alvie L.
