I am looking for an obit for my great uncle Riley Hodges who died November 19, 1986 in Marianna, Jackson CO., FL. He was born Nov 14, 1910. His parents were Oscar Hodges and Nola Thomas Crews. He married Margaret Magdaline Hersey 28 Mar 1936. She is still living in Marianna. I found him online at the New Salem Cemetery in Marianna, FL. I would appreciate anyone who can help me. Thanks in advance for helping me. Stephanie Grohol
Just as a side note, neither Levi Harris nor William West have been proven as Florida Pioneers through the Florida State Genealogical Society Florida Pioneer Descendants Program. Looks like both of them were here well before statehood. Be glad to work with you to get them established. Leslie

Jefferson County, Florida by Jerrell H. Shofner Page 92: In discussing events around 1833: While Wirt and Goldsborough were organizing their German colony, Randall brought the Murat Negroes to the Miccosukee plantation and began clearing land. Florida law required a white man to live on every plantation cultivated by slaves, and Randall explained that while he intended to supervise operations he had engaged William West, a recent immigrant from England as overseer. West lived in a house owned by one of the Townsends near the plantation and the arrangement was only nominal, being made to avoid a penal statute. Page 121: While writing about the slavery laws "Sometimes the letter of the law was obeyed while its spirit was violated. Thomas Randall hired William West to supervise William Wirt's Negroes at Miccosukee, without any actual duties, but merely to satisfy the law." (Personal note - I think Miccosukee is in Leon Co.) Page 153: This is a section on crimes "Although the provocation is not know, Samuel Puleston, a prominent Monticello druggist, shot and wounded Richard P. Leonard and Winfield Anderson as they were riding past William West's tavern in Monticello in 1850." Hope this helps. Leslie Maddocks Florida State Genealogical Soc.
Could you please tell me if there is anything in the book about William West...he was there in 1850 and owned a home...some of his children were born there (Monticello)..I have the 1850 census report and he obviously had a jail...thank you so much. Early this year, someone mentioned a "Jefferson County History Book" There is supposed to be an entry on page 48 regarding Levi Harris. I would like to know if this book is still available or if I could get a copy of this page. I am interested in knowing the year (dates and exact location) of this Levi Harris. Don't know for sure if he is "mine'. Thanks, Emma in NM
"Jefferson County, Florida" by Jerrell H. Shofner: Page 48 "Under an 1830 territorial enactment, elections for militia officers were held at the call of Colonel James L. Parish, commander of the Ninth Regiment. As captain of a volunteer company of cavalry William R. Taylor received 16 votes to five for Joel Conyer. For the infantry companies, Levi Harris was elected captain and Noah P. Suggs lieutenant of one; Alexander R. Murray became captain of the other with John Johnson as first lieutenant and L. M. K. Holliman as second lieutenant." This information came from the election returns of 1830 at the Florida State Archives. Leslie Maddocks Florida State Genealogical Soc. Earlier this morning I posted a query regarding John Lawson and Mary McElvy/McElvy in the 1910 Gadsden Co, FL census. I need to clear up something. I am looking for John Lawson McElvy/McElvey and his wife, Mary McElvy/McElvey. I had forgotten that Lawson is also a surname. Sorry 'bout the confusion. Hi I have agreed to help my friend find information for their family. The Surname is: SHELTON, Jr., & SHELTON, Sr. The Complete name for both: Raymond Aldine SHELTON, Jr. & Sr. I have just started and really don't know where to start first with so little information. Should I start with the grandfather or start with the daughter? The SHELTON's live and lived in Jacksonville. Sr., is deceased. Thanks in advance for any starting points. SJCook

Hi.. I am seeking some information on my great grandfather, (John?) Joshua Hodges who was born in 1866 or 1867(depending on onfo) in Moniac, Charlton Co., GA. He was married to Courtney Victoria Crews. He died bef 1920...I didn't find him in the Baker County, FL 1920 census so I am assuming it is true he died before 1920. I did find him in the 1910 Baker County Fl Census. I was looking in Oak Grove Cemetery info on the Baker County USGen Web site and I didn't find him listed as buried in Oak Grove...neither did I find him for the other Baker Co cemeteries....Also in some places....Josh also was named John Joshua....though he is listed in the 1880 census as Joshua....I was wondering would he be listed in any cemeteries in Baker County cemeteries, such as Oak Grove Cemetery? And also could someone get a better birth and death date if they do indeed find his grave? His parents were Willis Aaron and Mahala Johns Hodges. In the 1880 census he was 14.... I got an email from Carl Moberly..saying that Joshua could be in an unmarked grave but should be next to his wife, Courtney Victoria. So if anyone can help me in my search, I would appreciate it...I would like to know his true birth and death date if it is there, since I am not living in Fl anymore...I live way up north in PA. Would appreciate any help anyone can give me.... thank you in advance for helping. Stephanie Grohol

MINORCANS TO FLORIDA Thanks to the hard work of Lucie Servole Myers, Olive Tree Genealogy has an original research project reconstructing names of colonists of Greek, Italian, Minorcan and Turkish origins to Florida in May 1768. Eight ships sailed under the direction of Andrew Turnbull. Lucie has reconstructed the names of 431 passengers on board the 8 ships. This is a wonderful database and I owe a big thank you to Lucie for allowing OTG to publish this online for all to use. The ships are organized in the following immigrant groups: Passengers from Spain http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflaspain.shtml Passengers from Greece http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflagreece.shtml Passengers from Corsica http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflacorsica.shtml Passengers from Canary Islands http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflacanary.shtml Passengers from Italy http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflaitaly.shtml Passengers from Balearic Islands http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflabalearic.shtml Good luck to everyone looking for an ancestor! As always, this Olive Tree database is available for free for all researchers.
