Thanks to all who responded. The first reference to Camp Lee in Florida was in the Volumes entitled: Biographical Rosters Of Florida Confederate and Union Soldiers, 1861-1865, Vol. 2 p. 736. A Google search listeds about 10 sites with Camp Lee, Florida but none indicate where it was located. There were other Camp Lee's mentioned in other states, but I am trying to learn why a young man from Cape Canaveral would report to Marion or Alachua County. At that time Graysons Artillary was forming in St. Augustine as well as the Florida Blues. Again, thanks for you responses and any further comments or ideas will be appreciated. John L. I have a wonderful resource publication titled "Old Military Forts, Posts, and Camps, located in the State of Florida" by John E. Joline, St. Augustine, FL 1989. I have referred to it many times; however, did notice today that not only is Camp Lee not shown but neither is Camp Leon, where most of my "folks" entered the C.S.A. Leslie (Leslie Jeffcoat Maddocks) Florida State Genealogical Society, Inc.
Somebody else may know... but if not, two suggestions: 1. Find out what county or counties Companies C & F of the 7th Florida were raised in. It is very likely that if there was a Camp Lee, it was in that vicinity. 2. I don't know what source you got the name Lee from. One of the most active camps in Florida was Camp LEON, 6 miles of Tallahassee on the St. Marks Railroad at Six Mile Pond. (It's actually 5 miles due south of the capitol on the Woodville Highway. The Woodville Highway did not exist at that time, and the six mile distance is no doubt by rail from the depot which is a bit west of the capitol.) In like case with the various iterations of Mr. Burnham's name, could "Camp Lee" have actually been Camp LEON? The only published source that I know of listing such places is William S. Smedlund's _Camp Fires of Georgia's Troops, 1861 - 1865_. Georgia troops spent time at a number of locations in Florida that are listed by Mr. Smedlund. But other camps existed in Florida where Georgia troops never went. Smedlund's list could also be incomplete, even as to where Georgia troops went. He does list a number of camps named Lee. Camp Lee was a popular name. But none of the Camp Lees he lists were in Florida. Richard White Tallahassee, FL John L. Hi List: Am researching Mills Olcott Burnham, Jr. who enlisted at Camp Lee in Florida. Records indicate he was in Company C and F of the Florida 7th. Several variations of the name are listed. "Biographical Rosters of Florida's Conferedate and Union Soldiers, 1861-1865" records him as Miles Alford Burnan Co. F, 7th Florida, enlisted 11 Apr 1862 See Vol 2 page 736. "Headstones of Heros: The Restoration and History of Confederate Graves in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery, Records his name as Burnham, M.C., Co C, 7th Florida. Florida 7th infantry Co F. as posted on the net indicates one possiblity: Bumink, Miles private. Would also like to know the Civil War era location of Camp Lee in Florida. Any clarifiction of the above appreciated. John L. Whitney [email protected]
Hi... I am seeking some information on Oscar Hodges ( he was Joshua Hodges son). He was born Oct 15, 1887 in Baker Co., Fl and died Nov 16, 1887 in Baker County, FL. This is what I have on his wife....her name was either Nola Thomas or Sara Nolie Magnolia Thomas(she is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery under Sarah Magnolia Crews). Also have that she was Ivey Thomas and Hettie Durrence's daughter. Can anyone verify this information for me? Also a date of birth and date of death would help too. Appreciate any help and thank you in advance for helping.... Stephanie Grohol
Thanks to everyone who let me know that the Escambia list has been very quiet for the last couple of weeks. At least now I know that it wasn't a computer error somewhere along the line. Nancy

Is there anyone on this list that is also subscribed to the Escambia Cty. Florida list? I have not received anything from that list for the last two weeks. Emails to the list coordinator and the list administrator have gone unanswered. I even subscribed to the Escambia list under an alternate email address and received confirmation that I was subscribed, but nothing has come in from the list on that one either. I find it hard to believe that there has been no activity on it for that long and wonder why I am not receiving anything. Can someone tell me whether or not there has been activity on it in that time period and if so what I can do to get it straightened out? I would hate for the very information that I need to be mentioned and I missed it. Thanks, Nancy Nauenburg email: [email protected] Surnames: BOGHICH, GONZALEZ, BONIFAY, MAYO, GREEN

I am looking for on-line info or a census volunteer, for a lookup from these censuses. thanks. [email protected] Researching Pendarvis/Williams of Florida taken from: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/fl/statewide/census/statefla.txt or http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/fl/statewide/census/statefla.txt ------------------------------- First census 1845 Florida State Archives Record Group: 001021 Florida State Archives Call Number: S 1373 Summary - Scope Note 1.00 item This series contains the census returns from the first state census conducted in 1845. The series includes enumerations of the inhabitants of Alachua, Benton, Columbia, Duval, Gadsden, Hamilton, Hillsborough, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Madison, Marion, Orange, St. Johns, Walton, Wakulla, and Washington counties. The document also compares the federal enumeration taken in 1845. The enumeration lists the county, the name of the census taker, the number of white males over and under 21, the number of white females over and under 18, the number of male and female slaves, and the number of male and female free coloreds. The enumeration does not list the names of the inhabitants of the Florida counties. ----------------------------- Second census 1855 Florida State Archives Record Group: 001021 Florida State Archives Call Number: S 1374 Summary - Scope Note 0.25 cubic ft. This series contains returns from the second state census conducted in 1855. Returns for Marion County are the only known existing state census records for 1855. The information recorded in the book includes the name of the head of the family, the number of white males over and under 21, the number of white females over and under 18, the number of children between 5 and 18, the number of children in schools, the number of male and female slaves, the value of the slaves, the number of male and female free persons of color, the number of acres of and value of land, and the value of buildings, furniture, and plantation livestock. This series contains returns from the third state census conducted in 1867. Although incomplete, the records include books of enumeration from Hernando, Madison, Orange, and Santa Rosa Counties, total tabulations for the State, and miscellaneous fragments, such as a page listing the enumeration for Franklin County. The books of enumeration have separate listings for "colored" and white inhabitants. Both include the name of the head of the family, the number of males over and under 21, the number of females over and under 18, the total number of inhabitants, and the number of males between 18 and 45. The tabulations list population totals by county for "colored" and white populations. --------------------------- Fourth census 1875 Florida State Archives Record Group: 001021 Florida State Archives Call Number: S 1364 Summary - Scope Note 1.00 microfilm reel(35 mm.) The information recorded in the returns includes the name, age at last birthday, sex, and race of all those persons listed. For some entries, other information is provided including occupation, the value of real estate, the value of personal property, the number of acres planted in cotton, the number of acres planted in cane, and the number of orange trees. Any help would be great.
To all participants - hello For about a year i have been trying to locate the following and if anyone can help I will be eternally grateful. JOHN L.? CONRAD - MARRIED TO MAY ANN (NEE CARTER) FEB. 1948 AT LAKE WORTH, FLORIDA - EPISCOPAL CHURCH. HER MOTHER IS MARY LOU CARTER, WIFE OF HARRY FULLINGTON CARTER FROM NEW YORK STATE AND WOODSTOCK ONTARIO, CANADA. I HAVE NO IDEA IF THEY ARE DEAD OR ALIVE - BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN THEM ON SSID. Thanks for any help Dave
I guess I got too excited when I discovered Jack Dyess with his first wife. The other Andrew seems to be documented very well. It is NOT Isaac that is buried in Baker County. It is EZEKIAL DYESS. Does anyone have 1850 - 60 -70 census records listing the family of Ezekial Dyess? Possibly Florida or Georgia. Thanks Faye
James Robert Cooper was born between 2 Dec 1852-2Dec 1855. His death certificate states 1853. His tombstone says 1852. The 1900 Fedeeral Census for Pasco Co. computes to 1855. The pob alternates on the census between Ga and Ala. His death certificate says Al. and my grandfather(Streety Cohen, his son) said Al. He married Mary Etta Gillett, daughter of J.J. Gillett (son of Anderson) and Malinda Morgan (daughter of Ephraim and Mary F. Parker) abt 1875. In her pension application file for widows benefits his mother-in-law Malinda has in her folder an affadavit from him stating he has known her 35 years as a near neighbor, longer but 35 years as near neighbor, this was dated 27 June, 1902 and states he was 50 years old. This calculates to knowing her since 1867, and if he is 50 yrs old he has known her since he was at least 15. his place of residence on this affadavit is Wiley, Pasco Co. The Gilletts were in Lafayette/Levy/Dixie Co., I believe before they moved to Pasco/Hernando Co. for land from a Bounty Land Grant for Indian Wars service. James Robert homsteaded 80 acres in Pasco Co., and received the Patent in 1891. I am trying to trace Roberts parents and siblings. He does NOT belong to James Madison Cooper living in the Hillsborough area. I am wondering if he is the James from: Robert M. Cooper family of Lafayette Co., New Troy P.O. Fl listed with (James age 16 abt 1854) brother Joseph W. Cooper (13 y/o abt 1857) sister, the wriiting is almost illegible but ? Wilmoreth (11 y/o 1859) and sister Sarah C (8 y/o 1862) ALL born in Alabama. The wife Nancy(Horton) is not their mother. She was in the 1860 Irwin Co., Ga census living with her parents Lemuel and Frances, siblings and a 4 y/o Jacob G. Cooper, that apparently disappears after this census. A close neighbor of the Hortons is Robert Cooper age 70 and his wife Sarah 66 from N.C. In the 1885 census all above children of Robert and UNKNOWN are gone and two girls, I assume the children of Robert and Nancy are there, Anna age 11 and May or Mary age 10. In her widows pension application dated 1909, Nancy states she has been a resident of Lafayette Co., Florida since 1870 and that she is a resident of Old Town and her address is c/o E.L. Cottrell. If anyone is researching these Coopers and has info on this Robert, please contact me.

My on line Dyess Ged Com File has been updated to show the new found connection to Andrew Isaac Jackson (Jack) Dyess. His father was Isaac of Florida. This family is known to have been in GA and FL. Does anyone have a clue who the father of Isaac of FL was. Isaac was married in Bryan County GA and lived before that in Tattnall County. He married Cynthia Geiger. Also, does anyone have any of the descent ants of the several Moses Dyess who lived in Augusta GA from the earliest days of the Georgia Colony. I have much info on this Moses (the earliest) but nothing on his descendants. I believe this Moses was the son of Jacob Dice who arrived in the Georgia Colony in 1737, but have not connected them, except by name and location. This file can be viewed on my web page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/9828 Scroll to surnames and click on Dyess. Any information on any of the members of these Dyess families will be greatly appreciated. If your Dyess or related family connection is not listed here, I would love to add it. I will add to the file any information that you will share with me. Thanks Faye
