    3. My appreciation to all who responded to my question about Camp Lee. I am impressed with the depth of knowledge you all have and appreciate the research many did to help solve the question. Thanks to you, I now know where he enlisted,(where Camp Lee was) what hospital he was in and where he is buried including the grave number. Thanks again, John John L. Whitney [email protected]

    1. [FLORIDA] Location of Camp Lee
    2. My great-grandfather's service record abstract indicates that he enlisted in Co. C, 7th Florida Infantry at Camp Lee. Soldiers of Florida and Confederate Military History say that the 7th Florida was formed at Gainesville. In April of 1862, Governor John Milton posted a letter to Brigadier General Floyd instructing him "to arm all the companies which may be at Camp Lee, near Gainesville, - - with Enfield rifles". On April 10, 1862, Governor Milton posted a letter to Secretary of War Randolph which stated "Camp Lee is near Gainesville, East Florida". That's pretty definitive and authoritative as far as the Gainesville camp goes. In addition, however, the Official Records includes a list showing the 5th Florida was at "Camp Lee near Tallahassee" on May 21, 1862, so there were at least two camps in Florida. A quick sort of the Official Records CD returns hits on Camps Lee in Missouri, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. There were probably many more.

    1. Re: [FLORIDA] Camp Lee
    2. Richard White
    3. I reiterate... Lee was a popular name for Confederate Camps. So was Jackson. There were camps all over the place, even just within Florida, and as various troops moved in and out the names changed, or at least the different units used different names for the same place. An example is Camp Leon here in Leon County. The daily Florida History e-mails have reference to it as Camp Mary David. However, I am pretty certain that it was actually Mary Davis. I see no reason at all to believe that there was only one Camp Lee in Florida. There may very well have been one in every place mentioned so far, as well as others. Another example... I think that as soon as Gen. Finegan was removed from command after Olustee, the camp near Lake City that bore his name, got a new one. Another possible example... Camp Lamar Cobb. Gen. Cobb's successor in command was very critical of his "nepotism" and though I don't know of any specific new name or even if Camp Lamar Cobb continued to exist after that point... but if it did, I'll pretty well bet that its name changed. Mr. William S. Smedlund, at the time of publication of his book, lived at 1666 Glen Arm Dr., Lithonia, GA 30058-5513. That's all I know... <G> RW Warren Smith wrote: >Richard: Who is Mr. Smedlund and how do we get in touch with him? 1. [FLORIDA] William McElvy & Barbara Reeves
    2. I am looking for info regarding my g-g-g-grandparents, William McElvy/McElvey and his first wife, Barbara (Barbary) Reeves. They were married in 1799 and had 14 children. They were in Burke Co, GA in 1802, then in Tattnall Co, GA in 1820 and then in Decatur Co, GA in 1830 where they settled and died. Barbara died in 1838 in the Bainbridge, Decatur Co, GA area. William was a Primitive Baptist preacher in SE GA. He died in 1842 in the Bainbridge, Decatur Co, GA area. I would like to know where Barbara Reeves was born, married and who her parents were. I am also looking for descendants (McElvy and Reeves) of William McElvy and Barbara Reeves McElvy. I have extensive info on 12 of William & Barbara McElvy's 14 children that I will gladly share. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "Recipes from Family, Friends & Strangers," by Liz Gerlits (a cookbook with a genealogy flavor). 1. Re: [FLORIDA] Camp Lee

    3. One thing to keep in mind is that there were two military district headquarters in Confederate Florida... that I know of. This may have (or probably did) change from time to time and I think that they were in effect consolidated by the end of the war. One was in Quincy, Gadsden County, and General Howell Cobb established Camp Lamar Cobb near Quincy when he was commander there (Lamar Cobb was his son & adjutant). The other was at Lake City, Columbia County. There seem to have been several names applied to the Confederate encampment near Lake City from which the Battle of Olustee was fought and there may have been another or others in the vicinity. It appears that the defensive posture of the Confederate forces within Florida was very fluid... essentially a mobile defence that anticipated and responded to Union activities. As various units came & went it seems that in some cases at least, they gave the same place a different name. A friend of mine and fellow member (at different times) of D Co 1/502d Infantry in Vietnam, Mr. Mike Kelley, recently published the results of a massive effort entitled _Where We Were_ with over 600 pages of information about places named by Americans in Vietnam. We probably don't think much of military efforts in Florida during the Civil War period now, because of a focus of going on the better part of a century and a half, on main battle areas of the Armies of Northern Virginia and Tennessee. But Florida was nothing like a vacuum. On a small scale there were continuous military activities here throughout the war. If it weren't for the thin & scattered nature of some of the documentation, a compilation of similar information for Florida could probably reach two or three hundred pages. There should be quite a story there, if it can be ferreted out. I'm glad to hear that Mr. Smedlund is working on this subject area. RW MAUREEN POOLE wrote: >My g-g-grandfather enlisted at Camp Lee. Am sure it was >in Lake City. >
