J. and he was 41 ....his wife, Melissa (maiden name, Altman), was 31, Ezra was 10, Leola was 5, Artis was 3. Theodore died in 1914 in Duval Co, FL. I found Melissa (51 yrs old) in the 1920 Duval Co, Marietta, Census, widowed and one child, Ethel, 8 years old. I do know that they had other children besides the ones listed..the other children were: Annie Bell and Theodore Jr. Appreciate any help in finding them in the 1910 Duval Co, FL Census...I am going to assume that Theodore might have shortened his name or the last name of Johns was spelled differently or shortened (john)....thank you.... 2. Deborah Byrd
    3. Death records before 1917 are extremely spotty and are not statewide. Florida didn't keep statewide records until 1917. The death records are on microfilm and found in some libraries, Ancestry.com has a pay for use site with some of the Florida Death Records. Unfortunately Florida, as most states, have not been able to fund putting their records on internet search sites. Deborah Byrd

    1. Florida Death Records
    2. Charles Larkins
    3. I have just started actively researching my Florida ancestors, and several people on this list have been very helpful, thank you. I have been guided to sites that have information concerning death records and it just occurred to me that there is a gap in the years available. When I go to http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com, they have records from 1877 - 1916. The other site, I don't have it in front of me at the moment, only had records beginning in the mid 1930's. Is there a gap in what is available? If not, is there an online source to the records from 1917 - the middle 30's? Thanks for any help you can offer!!! 2. Sharon Daniels
    3. We are researching mulatto families in Covington County, Alabama. We have a special interest in the Pea Ridge Community of the Conecuh River Township in Covington and Conecuh Counties, Alabama. These areas had a large percentage of mulatto slaves prior to the Civil War. After slavery, these people settled together and married. We descend from the ³Jackson² surname. Many of our descendants lived in Covington and nearby counties before the Civil War. After the Civil War most ³Jackson¹s² continued to live in Covington well into the late 1930¹s. Our search also extends to Escambia and Oskaloosa counties in Florida, where many residents from Covington traveled in search of employment, while others went to Ohio. We would love to correspond with others that are researching mulatto families from these areas with the surnames below. Thank you in advance for your invaluable help with our family quest. 3. There are several sources you can use. 1. From the home page of the Florida State Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/ you will find a Florida Bibliography by clicking on the "Pioneers" link. Under "Other Resources" you will find a link to "vital records" and various other "web links". The "vital records" link gives you information on obtaining vital records. The "web links" will take you to links that can lead you to vital statistics. 2. Florida has a Florida Combined Death Index on microfiche. The index is incomplete from 1877 to 1917 but is complete from 1917 to the present. The "vital records" link noted above will provide a listing of repositories who hold at least a partial set of the microfiche. Death certs are available from the Office of Vital Statistics, P. O. Box 210, Jacksonville, FL 32231-0042. They cost $5.00 (non-refundable) and it takes 3-4 weeks for processing. You can call 904-359-6900 (recorded msg) to obtain info. Basically it states: send a signed letter stating full name of deceased, sex, death date, city/county, your relationship, your address and your phone number with a check or money order for $5.00. For more information you can also go to http://www.doh.state.fl.us 3. Rootsweb at www.rootsweb.com under "hosted volunteer projects" has a number of sources for death information. 4. You might find further research opportunities at the United States Resources: Florida page at http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/USA/fl.html 5. Also try the Florida US GenWeb page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~flgenweb/index.html 6. Gail Harris provided the following link on the FLDuval Mailing list: Florida State Deaths Database 1877-1916 Deaths: (45,000+ records) http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/fl/_vitals/fldeathm.htm Hope this helps, Ann Staley, CGRS(sm) [CGRS, Certified Genealogical Records Specialist, is a service mark of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license by Board-certified associates after periodic competency evaluations.] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pattie Schultz" <Pattie.Schultz@Geac.com> To: <FLORIDA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 07, 2005 2:09 PM Subject: [FLORIDA] Florida Deaths > I have just found out that some relatives I was researching in Nebraska moved to Florida in 1912.
