    3. I read your rebuttal and found it interesting. I have read a lot of Fl history concerning Lee Co. my husband and children have roots here and in Marion, Alachula and Putnam Countries. I don't find it that you in any way slurred any race .. In fact it was enlightening. Thank you Norita Shepherd Moss ----- Original Message ----- From: Kyle S. Solomon, FGCU, Forced to Answer Bias Richard, Thank you for your comments regarding our Rebuttal to the article "Race and Civil War in South Florida," _Florida Historical Quarterly_ 77(Winter, 1999). David Bamford and I have a website which deals with Munnerlyn's Cattle Guard Battalion, also known as the Florida Cow Cavalry, at http://www.geocities.com/yes_album/Special_Cavalry.html Our Rebuttal to the Solomon and Erhart article is indeed a well-documented response to a vicious slur of the men who served in the Florida Cow Cavalry. We certainly don't think we "jumped the gun" by publishing our Rebuttal at our website. As a matter of fact, I suspect that more people have read our Rebuttal than have ever read Solomon's piece in the _Quarterly_. And I say that as a former member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Historical Society. As far as "anger" is concerned, David Bamford and I are both direct descendants of men who served in the Florida Cow Cavalry. We take our responsibility seriously, as members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, to uphold the honor of our Confederate ancestors. I note that you are also a member of the SCV and I am certain that you would come to the defense of any of your ancestors who were unfairly maligned by a writer with an obvious political agenda. Our Rebuttal article does not purport to deal generally with the "complicated" subject of race relations among white Confederate and Union soldiers from Florida and black soldiers of the United States Colored Troops. We were addressing specific incorrect statements made by Solomon and Erhart in their article. I am well aware of the reports concerning the treatment of wounded black soldiers after the Olustee battle. David J. Coles has covered the subject extensively in his writings. I am also well aware of the behavior of black Union soldiers at the Battle of Marianna. So, Compatriot Richard, we have chosen to respond to Solomon's defamation with well-researched and well-reasoned points throughout our Rebuttal article. If a certain attitude is present, especially in the concluding paragraphs, so be it. We have a passion for revealing the truth. Regards, Kyle S.
