Fl Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Fl/Lee/10248 Surname: MERCER, LEGGETT ------------------------- Does anyone have connection to the surname MERCER? I am desparately trying to discover the parantage of my great grandmother Eula M. Mercer who married George Harrison Leggett. Eula had 2 brothers and 2 sisters...(Wesley, Lewis, Lela & Ida) which I have photos of. Eula died at the young age of 25 due to complications in childbirth and I have been unable to determine any additional information on her family. Her death certificate indicates her birth as Florida. She lived and died in BOCA GRANDE, FL (LEE COUNTY) with her husband and children; however she was buried in Mulberry, FL (Polk County) per her death certificate. PLEASE contact me if you have any connection whatsoever. Thank you. Jeannie:o) JIMason6965@cs.com

I wrote about Flanders being 20 years older than my sister, Mary Jo. I should have said "to the day". Mary Jo was born April 25, 1937 so Flanders must have been born April 25, 1917-EXCEPT- I remember hearing that he added a year to his age to enable him to join something-maybe the National Guard? So the date might vary by one year, but that's pretty darn close. Good luck in your hunting. Doris Albritton Smith

Posted on: Lee Co. Fl Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Fl/Lee/10243 Surname: ------------------------- Oh yes, I remember The Sheriff. He was the Sheriff for quite awhile as I recall. One of the things that stands out in my mind, is that they had the only fallout shelter in Lee Co. at their house. Now, I think the homeowners turned it into a game room. He was an old school lawman and kept things under control in his own way. May not have been the proper way but it worked. Our town was a pretty safe place to be.
Interesting stories I believe he was a member of the Florida HIghway Patrol in the early days before elected the Sheriff of Lee county. He knew my husband and when we moved back to FL in 1958 offered him a job, but hubby wan't impressed then. Side note: He knew my husband for years and in early 1960 or so he got a speeding ticket When he went to the old jail house to pay it Snag said " Well here comes of one of the Moss Boys. I think this one is the one they call " Leadfoot"!!!! I will look in some of my books on Lee County and Ft. Myers there may be more information Rita Moss From Florida the land of Sunshine and fun. May all your ancestors have two legs and have been smart and left clues you can find in your genealogical research!!!!!
"Snag" went to school with my mom, Pauline Davis, and he was an assistant scoutmaster in the Boy Scout troop I was in. His son Tommy and I went through school together. But I thought his real name was Flanders, not Flanding. If it wasn't his real name, I'm pretty sure that it was Flanders that he was called when it wasn't "Snag"... at least it was by mom. I don't think that he was in exactly the same class as mom, but in those days Fort Myers schools were so small things like that were hardly noticeable. If I went through mom's high school year books I'm pretty sure that there would be photos of him and I imagine that I might have some in my scouting photos. He didn't participate in scouting all that much, but once a year he took us camping at his hunting camp, which if I recall right was in Collier County. Once, when a hurricane came in unexpectedly, he sent his deputies out to Ten Mile Canal to roust us in the middle of the night and take us home in their patrol cars. At least that's the way I remember it... I may have pretty much slept through that. <G> Richard White Tallahassee, FL Misty Flynn Lenz wrote: > Posted on: Lee Co. Rev./Dr. William E. Collier, a retired Methodist minister, lawyer, and Civil War surgeon, died in October of 1886 in Fort Myers. His wife, Sarah Holmes Collier, died only two months before. These dates were from the beautiful obituary I received from the church. He had previously been the presiding elder of the Tampa District, and had set up missions with the Seminoles in the Everglades. I have been in communication with both Lee and Monroe counties, since the county name changed in (I think) 1887. I am gathering from the responses I have gotten that any probate or other records were either "caught in the middle" of the change or just lost. Does anyone have an idea of where I might be able to find their burial site? I just have no idea where to write. I am not adverse to paying fair costs for someone who might help. I am just unable to get there myself and search. I have much more info if someone can help me. He sounds like he was quite a guy! I would love to have known him. There may be more family there, as the obit says they were survived by 4 children. I have only 3 in my research. They are Reverends Oscar and Junius Collier, and Lelia Collier Hussey. They are buried in the central Florida area. I have often wondered if they were with a surviving child in Ft. Myers, or vice versa. Thanks, Sydney Cardner (the Sydney is female)
