    2. Does anyone have an article that was printed in the Herald on Jan. 24, 1902, concerning the Padillas of Cayo Costa. I would be very interested in the context of that article. If someone has access to the archives and could get me a copy, that would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brenda L. Jones

    1. [FLLee] Re: Lee County-Boca Grande
    2. Phoebe, I don't know if this will help you any. The 1910 census does not show any Jones on Boca Grande (Gasparilla Island). It does show a Jones family living on Cayo Costa or Punta Blanco. John and Sarah Jones with their five children; Alex, Joseph, Willie, Minnie and Mary. The book "Boca Grande, A Series of Historical Essays" shows the proprietor of Gasparilla Fishery as Jones at one time. A quote from the book "the Gasparilla fisheries were under the successive proprietorships of: Jones, Vincent, McCrary, Grigsby,Vickors, Dixon, and finally, the Gaults, who are the present proprietors." Also, the 1910 census does not show a seamstress, but does show one dressmaker. Bertie Sarner, 18 years old. There is no mention of a Dooley family. I doubt this is any help, but is all I have. Brenda L. Jones

    1. [FLLee] Re: Lee County-Boca Grande
    2. Hello Brenda; I am trying to research my mother's family on Boca Grande. She was born 13 Jan 1912 Beulah Jospehine Jones. Her parents were Allen Jones and Genevieve (? or some variation) Dooley. Her parents died when she was very young and she was raised on Boca Grande by a grandmother. I do not know which grandmother, but she was a seamstress. I believe that Allen Jones may have been killed in some type of work related accident - may be on a dock. Mother married in about 1928or29 and left Boca Grande. Would your mother know anything of these families or possibly any sources I could research or contact for more info? Thank you for any help you can give me. Phoebe Willis, Greenville, SC

    1. [FLLee] Take action or bad news for genealogy
    2. Please take the time today to write a letter to your Senators, your Representative, the President, the Vice-President and the Secretary of Human and Health Services. Addresses at the bottom of this e-mail. This is so important to all genealogists! The rate increase will be effective July 1st, so we don't have much time! Please write today, it will only take a few minutes to compose a letter and send it off. Copied from a post to another list: I have just discovered that the SSA is raising the price by 286% for the most valuable tool that genealogists request, the SS-5 form, Original Application for SS Number... It is going up from its present $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. Reference: <http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm#_Toc517745431> This is untenable, since many people who do genealogy are older retired folks on fixed income... and this large increase appears to be intended to discourage the public from access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act. How can it cost $27 to receive a request, then make and mail a copy of the one page document??? ...Government is not intended to be making a profit... The $7 seems high, when you actually evaluate the task...and Researching costs more...Could it be that they have some awfully high paid clerks...and/or interns...??? Since anything can be proven by statistics, I don't believe their "analysis" but you might want to make your representatives in Congress aware of this... Senate Addresses <http://www.senate.gov/> House Addresses <http://www.house.gov/> President George W. Bush: <president@whitehouse.gov> Vice President Dick Cheney: <vice.president@whitehouse.gov> Assistant-Secretary for HHS: <Sandra.Eubanks-Brown@hhs.gov> Notify all your Genealogical buddies, too??? We all need to write...

    2. Sydney Cardner
    3. I have found my gggrandfather and his family on the 1880 census for Ft. Myers. With them is their daughter, Virginia Kefo, according to the census. I have also seen the Refo name connected with the family. I have found a marriage in Monroe County (later Lee County) for Dec. 25, 1883 for Virginia Refo and Charles F. Garrett. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with either name, and which would most likely be correct. They are both most unusual. 3. I am trying not to say too much right now, but I am not happy with the format. 3. There is only one combined board now, possibly the advanced search will take you to a place with drop chart of selections. I haven't figured it out either. I used to visit her as a child all the time. My grandmother lived with her for years. I even remember her husband Tom, but I think I only saw him twice before he died. I believe I was about nine when he passed away. There was another Rosa Padilla that married Jose Emanuel de Almas. She was born in 1886, after the first Rosa died. I believe there was a total of nine children of Torivio and Juanita Padilla. Brenda
