    3. Interesting letter that I got off the Dale County, AL list on a man with Jackson County connections. This is not my line, but I'm forwarding it to this list from Faye Pekas at [email protected] Hope someone connects. Hi I have just joined this mailing list. I am searching for info about a ggg Uncle, Lanier Brewer. I have almost no information on him at this time except he lived in Dale County Al in 1835. I mostly joined because I came across a priceless piece of history for Dale County and wanted to share it with a genealogy society in that county. It is a letter written by Lanier to his brother, my ggg grandfather. The letter is as follows. I found it at: http://home1.gte.net/t7789ter/wcbrewerletter.htm State of Alabama Dale County, May 23, 1835 Dear brother I embrace the present opportunity of writing to you to let you know that myself and family is in reasonable health at this time hoping these lines may reach and find you and family enjoying good health. I have nothing of importance to write to you only we are suffering with drouth at this time. We have had no rain since the first of April of consequence and it appears no prospect of any. It was so dry last year crops were short and the winter was dry throughout and it is still dry and it appears to me there will be a famine in the land. There is many people in this country that has neither bread nor meat and they can't get it for the money. Some say they have had no bread in two or three weeks and they go with money in their hands and can't get it and the rivers are so low that provisions can't be brought from other countries and I fear some will starve to death for want of something to eat and without a great alteration there will be nothing made in this country at all this year. I would be glad to see you and your family but I don't know that I ever shall. I am old and feeble and cannot travel far if you can come and see me next winter I am broken up here and expect to go to Jackson County, Florida, next winter. My children are there and I expect to go there too. I was entered out three years ago by an old villian by the name of Benjamin Walden and he promised to pay me for my improvement and set the price himself. He was to give me a land warrant for eighty acres of land and a wagon and yoke of oxen and after a while he sent the wagon and oxens and more than a year passed away and he told some of the neighbors he was not going to pay the land warrant and it went through two courts before it was decided and I did not get justice and it went against me and I have to pay the cost, a hundred and forty dollars, besides my lawyers fee and now I must close. Write to me as soon as you get this and let me know how you are and your family is and the prospects of crops and the prospect of your country generally. So nothing more at present but remain your loving and affectionate brother unitl death. Lanier Brewer I assume when he says "country" he means "county". Does anyone have any information about this man? I just started searching him so I can't give any other details. Thanks and happy searching Faye Pekas
