    2. The price of cotton was 13 1/2 cents in Nov. 1850, in middle Florida. In an autobiography by DR. CHARLES HENTZ, who came to Jackson Co. in 1848 and settled at Port Jackson, he states: "One of the worst, whiskey drinking, fighting, horse racing, gambling communities to be found this side of Texas." Dr. Hentz moved to Jackson Co. because of the large numbers of slaves and successful plantations, as he knew he would always have plenty of work and he would always get paid!
