My Dad was stationed for a bit at Drew Field (met my Mom and as they say, the rest is history). Drew Field was a P-39 base primarily. MacDill was a light bomber training base. They flew Martin Marauders and the base was know for "one a day in Tampa Bay" for the accident rate of the student pilots. Thonotosassa was WAY off the beaten path. They used to go out there to bivouac (sp?) in tents for training. My Dad and his tentmate were hit by lightning in their tent once there. He was still being treated at the VA for the burn on his leg when he passed away a couple of years ago. The base at the current Busch Gardens/Schlitz Brewery (or whatever is there now) was a fighter base as well. There is a model airplane club that still uses part of one of the runways for their field. Pretty much all of the land between 30th and 40th Streets, and Linebaugh to Fowler was under concrete at one time. Seems my memory left out part of the details. Actually at one time, during a period of divorce, I rented a hovel in what was then called "Drew Park"..It was converted from Drew Field after the war. WHAT was I thinking? MacDill was the SAC base, right? I don't remember the field at Thonotosassa, nor the one at Busch Gardens. Thanks again.
