Thanks so much for the suggestion and the link. Does anyone know how I could obtain a complete copy of an estate settlement? Specifically I am looking for: Florida Estate Settlement for Mrs. John (Annie White) Estes. It was created in 1935 Thanks in advance. Randall: Do you need the cause of death on the certificate? Cause of death becomes public information 50 years following the death. Prior to that time, cause of death is considered confidential by Florida law. It will not be included on the death certificate for deaths in 1979. If you had more time, you can download an order form for the certificate on line. They do have a rush service. Go to www.doh.state.fl.us/planning_eval/vital_statistics/deaths.htm for more information. Deanna, Does that book have the Confederates who lost their lives during that battle? My ancestry Thomas J Land died on Sept 27, 1864 during the Battle of Marianna (according to military records) supposedly on the Jackson Co. Courthouse steps (this part from a family member). I would love anything on him or his brothers: Henry G. Land, Stephen W. Land, James C Land, John/Jehu R. Land (Jehu was often spelled wrong in his military records) and Benjamin F. Land. They all fought for Florida during the Civil War (Confederate Side). Thomas J Land, the one who passed during the battle, military records show as follows: "Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 13 March 1863. Substitute Company E, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Florida on 13 Mar 1863. Transferred into Company E, 5th Battn Cavalry Regiment Florida on 21 Sep 1863. Promoted to Full Sergeant (As of Co. E 5th Battn FL Cavalry) on 21 Sep 1863. Transferred out of Company E, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Florida on 21 Sep 1863. Killed Company E, 5th Battn Cavalry Regiment Florida on 27 Sep 1864 at Marianna, FL." Anyway if you or anyone else for that matter might have any information about the Land Family during the Battle of Marianna I would appreciate any leads / advise or help you may be able to offer. Karen Kimmons-Johnson karenjohn@cfl.rr.com One copy of the book is at the State Library of Florida in Tallahassee. I'm not sure if it can be checked out or if it is a reference book. Dale.... UPS just dropped off my copy of Two Egg and it is fantastic!! Thanks, Frank ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
No, Whit, that Cynthia Dean is definitely not I. Interesting though, because there was yet another Cynthia Dean in garden center in Lowe's in Pensacola. Didn't know the name was so common. Cynthia
I have a copy. This was never actually published. Charlotte Corley Farley wrote it, placing heavy reliance on local tradition and legend. If you want me to look something up for you, just let me know. There also is a copy at the state library in Tallahassee and another at the University of Miami. I don't know if the Jackson County Public Library or Chipola have one or not. By the way, the new edition of my Battle of Marianna book will be out in book form in about two weeks. I just got the first copies and they should be available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc., by the end of the month. For whatever reason this is not in the Tallahassee Democrat online edition and in the newsprint hard copy version it is page two news (Memorial Day being over so I guess, vets again... ho hum...) but Congressman Allen Boyd has announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will build a new VAOPC (outpatient medical facility) in Marianna. Of course that is great news for military veterans in and around Jackson, Calhoun, Washington, counties in Florida and also LA (Lower Alabama), but it also will help veterans around Tallahassee and South Georgia by relieving some of the pressure on the Tallahassee VAOPC. They plan to do this every year on the first Saturday in May. This makes the third year the Old Timers Day has been held at Blue Springs. Stan: I have at least three relatives who are probably buried someplace in Jackson County, most likely in a long-forgotten family plot on their long-forgotten family farm, which was probably somewhere on the main road from Marianna past (and near) Sneads heading east. The deceased include my 2nd-great grandfather, John Richard Jones (died March 1, 1852) and two of his children, John Mallory Jones (died July 10, 1857) and Esther Kitturah Jones (died June 27, 1862). A third child (William Marion Jones) died in Knox County, TN during the war (Feb. 12, 1863), but it is unlikely his body was sent back to Florida under the circumstances of that time, so I presume he is not in Jackson County, Florida. My family removed to Texas sometime before the 1870 census, and presumably left all of the above buried wherever it was, but no records have survived with my family. Those deaths were long enough ago that it is easy to presume rather informal burial on family farm land, and over the decades since then, no doubt all have been forgotten. It is a common story, I know. What suggestions would you offer as to tracking down any remains of my family in Jackson County?
