Mary, The removal was done in groups or parties. Some of these included thousands of people, some only a few. The government hired contractors to supply transportation, provisions, etc., to these groups. Quite often there was a great deal of fraud involved and thousands died on the trail from hunger and sickness. I do not think there is a master census because the removal took place over a number of years. A roll was prepared for each party, though, so if you can figure out what year they were moved it becomes pretty easy to track them down. A census (far from complete) was done of the Creek Nation during the 1830s and a census was done of the Apalachicola Bands of Seminoles before they were removed in 1838. If you know your relatives wound up in Oklahoma, another good place to check is the Dawes Roll. This was a list prepared of all the Native American land holders in what is now Oklahoma. It is the basis used today for membership in the Seminole, Muskogee (Creek), etc., Nations of Oklahoma. Mary, Yes, there is considerable documentation available about the forced removal of the Creeks and Seminoles and the Trail of Tears. Rosters or listings of the Native Americans were kept and the contractors and Army officers assigned to escort them kept journals and filed reports. A great place to start researching this is Grant Foreman's book, "The Five Civilized Tribes." This will give you an excellent overview of removal and the Trail of Tears. Mr. Foreman relied heavily on source documentation in writing his account and, although other books have come out since then, his remains by far the best in print. It should be available in pretty much any library and is still in print through the University of Oklahoma (you can get it through Amazon, etc.). According to my maternal grandmother, her grandmother was a Seminole who, along with the rest of her family, was forced out of her home and "escorted" to the Arkansas/Oklahoma territory on The Trail of Tears. She meet and married her husband on The Trail. He was a Union soldier assigned to "escort" them to their new home in the Arkansas/Oklahoma area. Is there any kind of documentation anywhere which would give me information on the families involved in The Removal? Is there a listing anywhere which would give names of those who were rounded up? Soldiers who escorted them? Thanks! Mary, I'll scan through my papers this week and see if I have anything that might be of interest to you. I definitely recognize a number of the names you mentioned (Odom, Stanley, Kirkland, Roberts, Collins, etc.). Some of my ancestors are buried at Shady Grove as well. Throughout their history, there was a great deal of contact between Jackson, Gadsden and Decatur Counties. Decatur County originally included what is now Seminole County, Georgia, as well and lay just across the Chattahoochee River from Jackson County. Back in the days before cars and highways, it was a just a matter of taking a ferry or hopping in a boat and paddling over. When I lived in Florida (third grade....a few decades ago!), I remember going to the cemetery. If it had been three years later, I would have had a camera and notebook out and would have listened more closely to the conversations around me. I would have especially have taken the time to interview my great grandfather, Andrew Augustus Collins. He would have been able to give me chapter and verse on all the questions I have now! I am also on the lookout for any information on my grandfather's first wife. He is listed as Ellis Crowser in the groom (should be Crowson). Her name was Sally Kelley. This was around 1919. . I am not yet retired from teaching full time, and teach part time for a local college branch during the summer. So, I really do not have the extended time I would need to come down and do the research first hand (i.e. interviews, etc.). Many of my mother's older relatives have since passed away and she did not know many of the children very well, if at all. So, like many of us, I am trying to use these listserves to pull a few bricks out of the wall and hope that some day, the right brick comes out, my head stops hurting (!) and I find someone in the family with whom to connect. In spite of my head hurting from hitting the brick walls, I do enjoy meeting the wonderful people who are so helpful even though their heads are also hurting from banging against their own section of "The Genealogy Wall"! Do you know if any of the Tuttle family came to Texas? My grandfather Lawson Sneed came from Jackson Co., Fl to Texas between 1880 and 1883.. His came with the Green family and married their daughter Fannie in 1883. When Lawson dies she moved home with her mother. After she dies when the boys are still young, several of them are sent to live the Tuttle family homes. I thought there might be a connection. I don't know that my husband's people came in through Florida. To my knowledge, it was the Carolinas and then into Tennessee and Kentucky. I would have to check with his aunt who has worked on his family for many years. Are these people who have grown up with deep roots in the area or people who have moved in recently? If you want to email me names privately, I will forward the information on to his aunt and have her get in touch with you. She does not "do" Internet. My mother's people (Crowson/Crawson, Odom, Stanley, Collins, Kirkland, and Robbirds/Roberts et al) were the ones who came into Florida. They came in through South Carolina, Mississippi, and Alabama into Georgia and then Florida. Most of the time, they seem to move between Decatur County, Georgia and the Jackson/Gadsden County, Florida area. I know that most of the Crowson family is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery. When I lived in Florida (third grade....a few decades ago!), I remember going to the cemetery. If it had been three years later, I would have had a camera and notebook out and would have listened more closely to the conversations around me. I would have especially have taken the time to interview my great grandfather, Andrew Augustus Collins. He would have been able to give me chapter and verse on all the questions I have now! I am also on the lookout for any information on my grandfather's first wife. He is listed as Ellis Crowser in the groom (should be Crowson). Her name was Sally Kelley. This was around 1919. . I am not yet retired from teaching full time, and teach part time for a local college branch during the summer. So, I really do not have the extended time I would need to come down and do the research first hand (i.e. interviews, etc.). Many of my mother's older relatives have since passed away and she did not know many of the children very well, if at all. So, like many of us, I am trying to use these listserves to pull a few bricks out of the wall and hope that some day, the right brick comes out, my head stops hurting (!) and I find someone in the family with whom to connect. In spite of my head hurting from hitting the brick walls, I do enjoy meeting the wonderful people who are so helpful even though their heads are also hurting from banging against their own section of "The Genealogy Wall"!
