Hello about ten years or so ago I viewed the '35 and '45 Fla census at the main library genealogy room here in Jacksonville. I got a special kick out of it as I got to see my father, Earl Scott, in a census, for the second time. Born in 1923, to Charles H and Lilla Bazzell Scott, the 1930 census wasn't out yet. He and his parents had moved to Jax, from Jackson County in 1938. The census showed my dad, his older brother Charles and sister Ruby all living there at that home in Jax. His other sister, LaRena was living here with her husband. All well and good EXCEPT when that census was taken Dad was still in the South Pacific in the Navy and The War and so was his brother! Ruby was living with her husband, Edwin Clark , and their children in Greensboro, Gadsden County, where they had lived since marriage in 1929! I don't know if the census taker asked for all my grandparent's children's names and listed them or what. Confusion reigns! Another instance where we must be careful with any census records. A side note to Cousin Rhonda, I received, from the Nat'l Archives, there is no record on Benjamin M. Burns, first husband of my g grandmother, Nancy Dykes Burns Scott.. Ben died in Confederate service and served from Alabama, 37th Ala Inf. I am still waiting on any records about Powell Coonrod. Will let you know right away. Randy PS Since I'm piggy-backing here, a note to all Jackson Co. researchers: I am close to completion on writing my Scott family history from about 1770. I would like to hear from inter-related J/Co families with my Scott's. I have a lot of data up to abt 1930, little after, on the marriage connections and descendants of Sarah Scott / Ferdinand Weeks; Mary Scott/Joesph Cox, Rhoda Ann Scott / Reuben Conner/Lloyd Wilbur/Daniel Cloud.; Brogdon - Key families and connections to Nancy Dykes Burns Scott, daughter of Henry Dikes/Dykes, Early Co.,Ga 1840's50's then J/Co Ben Burns family, do you know where, when, and how he died in that War? and one else descended from my G G Garndfather, James Franklin Scott, and his son, my G Grandfather, Sam Scott. I still say that if a 1955 Census occurred, the State Archives would know about it. RE: 1935-1945-1955 State Census There is a 1935 and 1945 state census for Florida but I don't know if it includes all counties but they are available on microfilm at the state archives. I bought copies on microfilm from the State Archives in Tallahassee for Jackson County so I know they have them. I must tell you that the quality leaves much to the imagination especially the 1935 which is white on black. As far as the 1955 I do not know but sure would like to know when you find out. Perhaps someone in the Secretary of State's office could at least answer if one was taken then for the follow-up question to find out who has custody of the record. I would guess it is at the State Archives but it may not be microfilmed and therefore they would be most reluctant to allow access to the average tax payer. Keep us posted. R. Watson
The Florida Archives has 1935 & 1945 Florida State Census on microfilm. Her question is -- "Was a 1955 Florida Census taken and is it available to the public?" I have emailed the Census Bureau regarding this question. I will let everyone know what response I receive. Deanna Ramsey
If they could not tell you at the State Archives whether or not a 1945 census exists, I would bet against there being one. After a fruitless trip to the State Archives in Tallahassee today, I did find an answer to my question about the 1955 Florida census. According to the Florida State Archives (as printed in the beginning of the 1935 census): "The first state census was authorized by the Constitution of 1838 (Article 9, Sections 1, 2) to commence in 1845 and to be continued at ten year intervals...Each of the succeeding constitutions, 1861, 1865 (provided for an 1867 census), 1868, and 1885, provided for the call for a census to the Legislature, who in turn, by individual acts, delegated the enumerations responsibilities to the Secretary of State and the Commissioner of Agriculture, with the latter carrying out the majority of the work. In 1949, the 1885 Constitution was amended (Article 7, section 5) to make the Federal census and the state census one in the same. Very few of the earlier census records have been located. Portions of the 1885, 1867 and 1875 censuses were filed with the Secretary of State. In some instances census enumerations, which were carried out on the county level, were kept with the counties. In April of 1935, the Legislature passed an act (Chapter 17269, Fla. Laws) to provide for the taking of the population census of the State of Florida for the year 1935.... The census records are arranged alphabetically by county and then geographically by election precinct...." I do know there is a 1945 census for Florida but am uncertain about a 1955. Anyone??? Does anyone know about the 1955 Florida Census? Was it released? Who has a copy? I know Florida has a 50-year privacy rule, as opposed to 72 years for Federal Census records, which means the 1955 census should have been released two years ago. Has anyone seen it? Just thought I'd ask. Thanks! Cindy ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
A Reb and a Yankee related?!?!?! God forbid! ha ha.Of course my late Dad married a Yankee gal from Rhode Island during WW 2 and I was born In RI in '45 and he moved us back to the sunny climes of collards and cat fish by that years' end. Guess I'm a half breed! At any rate, being half Cracker and half-Italian I'm the only guy I know raised on spaghetti and grits!! Thanks for clearing that GW Ball business up for me. Again! Congrats on being published! I think the first working title of my novel offended many would-be agents It was hither-to entitled The Ju-ish Axekutioner " as 10 year old male urchins might spell it, deals with a gaggle of Southern boys first confronting prejudices: religious/cultural/racial, and especially, when first meeting people of the Hebrew faith. The new title is "Pauly and The Axe Man " . The Axe Man is a Holocaust survivor. It is a story with much pathos and much humor written in the style of Mark Twain; one of my American heroes. I have 'done' his voice in animation shows since 1981. As for your book I ordered my copy yesterday. There is a possibility ( probability?) that involved in this battle was a George Washington Ball, late of the Union Navy. Greg, Thank you very much for the kind words about the book. It was a labor of love for many years. I'm glad you noticed the Olmstead reference! That was a fascinating bit of trivia to me as well. Bonifay is the county seat of Holmes County. About two miles south of Bonifay is Washington County. Jackson County is located NE of Bonifay (probably about four miles). The subdivisions are most likely in these areas. Bonifay is approximately thirty miles west of Marianna.
