    1. Re: [FLJACKSO] Rolling Store
    2. The last rolling store continued to operate up into the 1960s. I never heard of them showing movies, but it is certainly possible. The one that operated in the Parramore/Two Egg area was owned by Mr. Welch (sorry, I don't recall his first name). He also ran a small store on River Road near Parramore. The last time I remember looking, the old rolling store was still parked there behind the old store building. I'll be back down in Florida late next week and if it is still there, I'll snap a photo of it for you. 3. While I don't remember rolling stores having movies in Georgia, I know they were important to those of us without a car. I did find this little bit about Rolling Stores in Jackson Co., FL. I am sure all of you have seen it, but, I had not. Below it there are links to other sites, not from Florida, but, quite interesting. Winn --------------------- Another of the highlights of life in the country here in the fifties was the rolling store. A trip to town was no trivial matter in those days because many of the farm women still didn't drive and the men didn't have the time during the week. So, once or twice a week a mobile store fitted out on the back of a truck would make the rounds of the backcountry roads stopping at every house along the way. The stock was basic necessities such as staple foods, minor sewing supplies, cold soft drinks, candies for the children, chewing tobacco and cigarettes or rolling supplies for the men and snuff for the ladies. Often fresh and salted or smoked mullet from down on the Gulf were also available and was considered a special treat at our house. http://www.rootsweb.com/~fljackso/sloanfamily.htm Rolling Stores in Alabama http://www.arts.state.al.us/actc/articles/store.htm If you can remember old time "rolling stores" that means you were familiar with the country By Elliott Brack (Scroll down to 2nd article http://www.gwinnettforum.com/2003issues/03.0207.htm

    3. I think I may have called this by the wrong name...perhaps it was a rolling store. My mother grew up in Marianna. She remembers after WW II when she was a small child viewing movies from a truck on the street. The peddler would set up chairs on the street and hang a make shift screen out of a sheet or something similar. She said they would have intermissions several times during the movie to sell items. I was hoping someone else might remember or has heard of this. Or perhaps knows the name of individuals that may have had rolling stores in the area during this time. My mom has told me about seeing "Gone With the Wind" the first time projected on the wall of a store in Malone. 3. My Dad was stationed for a bit at Drew Field (met my Mom and as they say, the rest is history). Drew Field was a P-39 base primarily. MacDill was a light bomber training base. They flew Martin Marauders and the base was know for "one a day in Tampa Bay" for the accident rate of the student pilots. Thonotosassa was WAY off the beaten path. They used to go out there to bivouac (sp?) in tents for training. My Dad and his tentmate were hit by lightning in their tent once there. He was still being treated at the VA for the burn on his leg when he passed away a couple of years ago. The base at the current Busch Gardens/Schlitz Brewery (or whatever is there now) was a fighter base as well. There is a model airplane club that still uses part of one of the runways for their field. Pretty much all of the land between 30th and 40th Streets, and Linebaugh to Fowler was under concrete at one time. 3. Yes, I remember West Campus when in 1951 I was assigned by the Florida Military District to FSU at Tallahassee to help start up the FIRST Army ROTC unit at FSU. We were assigned to one of the old barrack buildings and could watch the FSU Acrobatic Team as they practiced their high-flying antics on their swings adjacent to our building. The ROTC unit was for studies in the Ordnance Dept of the Army. Our unit was made of a Lt. Colonel, a Major, and four Sergeant instructors. I was the Administrative Sergeant along with a Secretary, Mrs. Myra Lawson. The US Army personnel were Lt. Col. Cornell D. Booth (still lives in Tallahassee), Maj. William Lingenfelter - the officers. 3. Through the political influence of U.S. Senator Claude Pepper and Florida Governor Spessard Holland, Tallahassee’s Dale Mabry Field became an U.S. Army base on January 24, 1941. Local officials named the new field in honor of Tallahassee native, Army Captain Dale Mabry, son of former Florida Supreme Court Justice Milton H. Mabry.
