    1. Re: [FLJACKSO]  Civil War - 15th Florida Calvary history
    2. Jim, There is a brief history online at this site: http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/csarmy.html Basically, you will find that the 15th Confederate Cavalry was formed for the most part from independent companies from Alabama and Florida and attached to the Confederate army defending Mobile. Colonel Henry Maury was the commanding officer for much of the regiment's career. One company from Jackson County, the "Marianna Dragoons," was part of the 15th. There is a book out on the 15th. It basically consists of a brief history of the regiment, along with summaries of the records of the men who served. You can learn more about it here: http://www.heritagebooks.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HBI&Product_Code=G3813 It is fairly expensive ($40 plus shipping), so if you need information about just a soldier or two, let me know and I'll be glad to look them up for you. 3. Hi all! Both my grandparents (Ruby Messer...descended from Bryant and Marthe Messer) and Van ("Vannie") Kirkland (I think his grandfather/gr. Grandfather?) was Green Berry Kirkland)were originally from Dellwood area...they lived in Jacksonville for many years but are now buried back in Dellwood at the Baptist Church (along with my Dad - George Van Buren Kirkland - who died during Hurricane Katrina).I am unsure of some of this as I don't have my notes in front of me and have only been to Dellwood a couple of times in my life (I am now 56...yikes!) and I live in the Northern VA area. My aunt, Alice Kirkland Waters, has been active for many years in the cleanup of the Messer (Kirkland?) cemetery. I cant remember how I came upon this email list but am glad to have all this contact info....I am trying to do additional research and document ancestry on Messers and Kirklands. I have lived in Central Fl since 1943 ,when we moved to Lake Wales from Jakin. we were farmers and had a hard time making a living . So my Dad moved us to Fla where there was plenty work in the citrus. But we have always gone back to our little Town as often as we could . The people from there are close and look out for each other . Some are retiring and moving back there . I too would love to do so ,but too many years behind me to change things now. I am glad we can joke about all the things we cant do anything about. We just need to stick together and help each other. I took what was said about Chattahoochee in the tone in which it was sent - as a joke. I grew up in Marianna and Cottondale and would joke about those small towns quickly. I used to be embarrassed to be from those locations because of all the Deeply Southern, small town, mentality that my "big city" friends perceived. Then I happened to live in a town that had more rednecks per capita than all of Jackson County. One thing about this area, two brothers might fight all day but sit down and enjoy dinner together. What I mean is that emotions run deep and connections are most important. This list feels almost like a family sometimes. Occasionally we disagree, yet we all seem to help each other. I've always felt this is the best discussion list and our Jackson County web site sets the standard by which all others try to emulate. I do apologize for the misconceptions. I have since unsubscribed from this forum as I don't believe that I would get the necessary help when requested because of this incident. I hope that all of you continue on your search and wish you the best in your endeavors. Did you not read that part of her message? I too have family living there and buried there. Nothing offensive was said. Besides, Chattahoochee is tiny and has little to offer in Genealogy. I doubt they have a local internet provider either. How unfair these comments were to a newcomer on OUR list. Nina, Welcome to the Tri-State research area and please know the majority of the list is kind and as helpful as can be. I for one appreciate your stepping up and offering to help. Everyone should. 2. I hope no one un-subscribes from the discussion list. I post questions and readers are quick to respond with wonderful assistance! Now I find myself being quite protective of our group, web site, and this panhandle of Florida that I call home. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. I took this as a joke also. And Nina should not have been treated this way. We need her and every one else on this list. I think those people should apoligize to her.
