I also would like information on this as it sounds interesting.....Betty Subj: Train info (The "Geneva Train") Date: 10/22/98 12:30:18 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: SBAHN@aol.com To: FLORIDA-L@rootsweb.com I'm trying to make my family history come more alive by adding historical tidbits. I would love to have a picture of the "Geneva Train" which played a role in the Butler County, AL history and ran to Graceville, FL. The train in which I am interested in having a photo of was the steam passenger train that ran from Georgianna, AL to Graceville, Florida until about 1950 or so. I am mainly interested in the engine. The railroad line was a spur of the L&N. The train was also called "the Geneva Train" by those like many who lived on the "main" L&N line between Montgomery and Mobile. The train for some years actually went on to Montgomery. Thank all of you in advance for helping with this. S. H. Bahner sbahn@aol.com

One of my cousins told me that the Department of Environmental Protection used to have maps showing the old homestead/settlement locations. Yeah, I know its a weird department for it, but there you go. Don't know if they still have them, but a phone call or two should answer that question. Jack Butler I wonder what year this started...Betty
I remember seeing maps that showed the houses marked beside the road.....where and what time period this was I cannot remember...... :) Betty

Does anyone doing research in Jackson County have any information on the family of WILLIAM A. WHITFIELD? He is listed on the 1850 census as follows: WHITFIELD, WILLIAM A. 45 M Farmer ELIZABETH 36 FRANCES E. 19 JANE 17 WILLIAM W. 13 WILLIAM W. WHITFIELD was my g-g grandfather. I have very little information on him. I know he married ANN BRUNER (possible LEANNA MAE BRUNER). Their son, WILLIAM ELVIN WHITFIELD, was my great grandfather. WILLIAM W. is not on the 1870 Census. Quite possible that he died in the Civil War. Other Whitfield families that are likely connected are: B. V. WHITFIELD ) R. P. (REUBEN P.) WHITFIELD ) All on 1840 Jackson Co. Census S. B. (SEABORN BRITT) WHITFIELD ) These three also voted in the 1845 election at Campbellton. The earliest WHITFIELD reference on Jackson County is WILLIAM WHITFIELD who was on the 1825 census. There is a notation that his name also appears in courthouse records of Laurens Co., GA prior to 1825. WILLIAM WHITFIELD is also on the 1830 census. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any Whitfield information. Thanks! Patsy Powell ppowell@neto.com

Does anyone have further information on both Historical and Genealogical Societies in Jackson and Washington Counties? I would like to contact these for membership and further information. Thank you so very much. Cindy
Dear all........ Ok, this might not be directly related to Jackson/Washington Counties and if you want me to stay on the subject of the above, just let me know. Anyway, on another genealogy discussion list someone mentioned making a backup of your data. I'm not sure about everyone, but I have amassed enough papers and documents and copies of wills, pensions, marriages, death certificates, etc., to completely wallpaper my house - inside and out. To collect such an array I've travelled the state of Florida and some in Alabama (ok, so I am not a world-traveller lately.) To the point..... if I had to replace all of my documentation I'd be up a smelly creek without a paddle. So, I have a backup of all my documentation (census, wills, etc.). One person in my mother's family has a copy of everything I have that pertains to that side of my family and I have done the same on my Dad's lines too. I have noticed when giving them their "gifts" of these copies, they usually pick out something I overlooked which is just as exciting for me as finding the document in the first place. Hope that helps someone. Please feel free to share your ideas too. Cindy :::will be glad when hurricane season ends::::

I know this isn't directly associated with Jackson and Washington Counties, but I hope you all don't mind me sending you this information. Many of our ancestors came from Georgia to the greater Jackson/Washington Counties area. The link and url listed below will take you to the Georgia Department of Archives and if you scroll near the bottom you will find they've been busy inputting and uploading some of the Civil War Pension Records. <A HREF="http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/default.htm">Click here: Georgia Department of Archives and History</A> (http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/default.htm) Hope this helps someone! RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff --part0_908742188_boundary--
I told her to look in AL for a death cert. Any other suggestions? Betty Subj: annie laura yates Date: 10/18/98 11:24:39 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: funnsun@bellsouth.net (William R. Owens) Reply-to: funnsun@bellsouth.net To: bettymaes@aol.com Annie Laura Yates, Died October 1941 in Jackson County or Bay County Florida. A good friend of mine has spent a considerable amount of time searching for her mother's death certificate. Her mother died when she was only a baby and she was raised by her paternal grandmother for several years. No one can find this death certificate and she has had them search before and after 1941. There has been serious illness in the family and she would like to know what her mother died of. Apparently the mother's family never stayed in touch. Any suggestions???
My surnames that I'm currently researching in Jackson and surrounding counties are CREAMER, STEPHENS, HILL, with the various spelling variations. Also, I was in the area recently for a Barfield reunion and spent an afternoon looking in the woods at Cypress for the old HILL FAMILY CEMETERY. Followed directions(I thought) but had no luck. Does anyone have knowledge of who is buried there? It would be members of F. M. Stephens' family I think. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to hear from anyone interested in the LAURA CREAMER WHO MARRIED NOAH WILLIAMS,also. Thanks for a wonderful sourceof info. I enjoy the websites and links as well as the mailing list. TO: Rszasz9858@aol.com I found my WWI grandfather in the National Archives Record Group M233 - Registers of Enlistments in the United States Army 1798-1914. 81 rolls. They are available to order from the LDS Family History Center. There are similar records for other services. The NA has a catalog for Military Service Records that list all the different military records & indexes. Another NA collection to check is the WWI Draft Registration Cards (M1509). The NA Branch in Atlanta has the originals for the whole US but these too are available on microfilm at the LDS FHC. You must know your ancestors name & residence at the time of registration. The records are arranged by state, county, and surname (alphabetically within each draft board). Most counties had only one board; large cities had more. Consult the U.S. Military Records Research Outline available at most LDS FHC for additional information on using this collection. Persons who enlisted prior to the draft will NOT be found as was the case with my grandfather. If your local FHC is not familiar with how to look these records up ask for the FHLC (FamHist Library Catalog) - Author/Title Section (Available Fiche Edition Only)- National Archives - Then the M or T #. You should then be able to find the LDS Film Number to order the roll of film you need. GOOD LUCK! Rhonda Watson
