    1. John Brock
    2. Jimmie Brock
    3. Looking for information on John Brock who moved to Chipley (Washington Co.) probably between 1846 and 1850. He was in Thomas Co. Ga in 1846. Possibly had brothers Russell E. and William A. Brock and others. Russell E. Brock and William A. Brock are in Thomas Co. Ga in 1850. Later Russell E. shows up in Washington Co. John had a son, James Russell Brock (b. 1846 in Ga., my great grandfather) and probably other sons and daughters. John would probably been between 2- and 30 in 1850. If anyone is researching this family I would like them to contact me at JimBrock@dotstar.net or Kcorb1@aol.com Jim Brock

    2. Responding to Jim's query, I don't have information about the Brocks, but my Spence and Levins families made the same move (Thomas Co., GA to Washington Co., FL) about the same time. I am wondering if they were allied families. Duke Vickrey

    1. Vickers family
    2. I know several of you are researching the Vickers family, and I'm wondering if you can tell me where they lived before they came to Jackson County. I believe my James Cook who moved to Jackson County in the 1840's may have married a Nancy Vickers in Jefferson County, Ga in 1832. Does anyone know Nancy Vickers? Thanks, Stephanie Sellers McCulloch

    2. For those of you who have wanted a Jackson Co., FL Marriage Book 1900-1973 for your home library, or to give to a Public Library. Indexed by Bride: $40.00 Indexed by Groom: $40.00 Plus $3.00 for shipping Because we put the data online we don't get many request for books. We price the books to make $5.00 profit and this goes to help buy stamps and copy material to put on the internet. I have 3 requests at this time. Betty

    3. Betty, I have a copy of a little booklet called "Historice Sidewalk Tour Marianna, Greenwood" by the Jackson Co. Heritage Association. Not sure this is the same house, but it mentions on p. 9 the Marianna Woman's Clubhouse. "The old 'Messer Home' as it was known for 59 years was built in 1864 by Joseph T. Russ. In 1881 J. T. Russ and his wife, Mary, sold the house to his daughter, Luella Burke. In 1884 James Burke and Luella Russ Burke sold the house to Mary J. West, daughter of James and Harriett Hearn of Greenwood." It goes on a bit more, but that's all about Russ. Cynthia Dean

    1. Stewart/Gay family
    2. Sue H. Gill
    3. Before presenting my query, I would like to add my thanks to the people who have worked so hard to make the Jackson County web site such a success! It's the best! Where else could you find so many census reports, marriage records, etc. Just the sort of information that we need for documentation and verification. Now, on to business. I'm trying to track down the descendants of John Stewart, and his wife, Caroline (Gay) Stewart. Both were born in Jackson Co. John in 1833; Caroline 1839. I have come up with this list of children. According to a census report, Caroline had 8 children, but only 5 living in 1910. If there are mistakes, please let me know. l. Richard M. Stewart, born about 1861. Married twice--Lourena Sims and Isabella (Plair) Ham. 2. John (Green?) Stewart, born ca. 1865. m. Eliza Griffin. 3. Zilpha Suffie Stewart, born ca. 1869. m. John Irvin Henderson (my line). 4. Charles Thomas Stewart, born ca. 1870. m. Armenta Jane Keel. 5. Cynthia Stewart, born ca. 1875. m. ? Henderson. 6. Henry R. Stewart, born ca. 1876. m. Annie Bamberg. 7. David Stewart, born ca. 1878. 8. Theo Daniel Stewart, born ca. 1879. There was one census with a child, Ira, listed, but perhaps someone can tell me if he was the child of Richard M. Stewart?) I would like to hear from anyone with information regarding this family. I would like to follow up on descendants. I also need to know if any of these 8 children had a death certificate, and how they listed their mother's name. (I think Caroline Gay is the Winneford C. Gay listed on the 1850 census, but need further proof). I do have some information on some of these children, and may post more later, in hopes of connecting to family members. Thanks. Sue Gill

    1. Conflict between LDS sheets and County Records
    2. To Stephen: My advice is to rely on the county records and not the LDS family sheets. These sheets are put together by individuals who are often unskilled researchers. The LDS is just a depository for the sheets. They do not verify the accuracy of the information. You can take the existence of this letter as proof that these family sheets are not always right, because there are several of them that, if correct, proove that I don't exist. Duke Vickrey

    1. Re: John SPEARS
    2. Jackson County Web is the Greatest! Need help with John and Malinda (Griffin) SPEARS who were in Jackson Co. in 1840 (election list and census). They were born in GA., John abt. 1809 and Malinda abt 1816, GA county unknown. They were married abt. 1834, no record. John paid taxes in Calhoun Co. as early as 1847 and family included in 1850 Census. Both John and Malinda and a son, Lewis, disappeared from the Census by 1860 (epidemic of '57???); remaining family in household headed by Mary Jensey who later married Charlie Scott in Jackson Co. Need help with parents of John and Malinda and families of SPEARS daughters---Elizabeth married William Henry Pope, following marriages unknown: Malinda, Eliza, Temperance. Sons, William Jesse and John William died in Civil War. Will appreciate any help.

    1. Curtis R.Braxton of Cottondale
    2. Can someone help here.....Betty Subj: Wells or Gilbert Date: 11/28/98 2:44:46 PM Eastern Standard Time From: schilburn@hotmail.com (stephen hilburn) To: bettymaes@aol.com Hi, I came across your website sometime back. It's real good to see something that'll bring me back home even in yankee county.(I'm from Panama City orginally but I'm living in Michigan now. :-) I have a question and I don't know if you can help or lead me to someone that can. There is a lady named Robin Braxton who has done a great deal of research into my grandfather side of the family on my mothers side (My grandfather was Curtis R.Braxton of Cottondale). My question concerns the last name(maiden)of my great-grandfathers wife. According to Robin my great-grandfather's name was James John Braxton and his wife's name was Georgia Anna Gilbert. I talked to my aunt, the last living relative in my family on my mothers side and she said that her last name was Wells, not Gilbert. My aunt also told me that she has the birth certificate of my grandfather and it says Wells. I used your Bride/Groom marriage database and found that a James John Braxton did indeed marry a Georgia Anna Wells on October 24, 1878 in Jackson Co. I called Robin and she said my aunt probably got the wrong certificate because on the LDS pedigree sheet it says her last name was Gilbert. I'm confused. Which one of these sources is more accurate? Did my aunt get the wrong birth certificate? Any help you could render would be much appreciated. Oh yes, I enjoyed reading the article about life back in Jackson Co. back in the 40's and 50's. My aunt said she started a note book of all the happening on the farm when she was a girl.(Making homemade brooms and hog killing). I'm coming down for Christmas to see her and hope to get copies of this. What a shame I didn't get to ask my mother about a lot of these things before she died. Thank you for putting together your webpage. I really enjoy it. Stephen Hilburn
