    1. [FLJACKSO] Lanier Brewer
    2. Jeff Armstrong
    3. Interesting letter that I got off the Dale County, AL list on a man with Jackson County connections. This is not my line, but I'm forwarding it to this list from Faye Pekas at [email protected] Hope someone connects. Hi I have just joined this mailing list. I am searching for info about a ggg Uncle, Lanier Brewer. I have almost no information on him at this time except he lived in Dale County Al in 1835. I mostly joined because I came across a priceless piece of history for Dale County and wanted to share it with a genealogy society in that county. It is a letter written by Lanier to his brother, my ggg grandfather. The letter is as follows. I found it at: http://home1.gte.net/t7789ter/wcbrewerletter.htm State of Alabama Dale County, May 23, 1835 Dear brother I embrace the present opportunity of writing to you to let you know that myself and family is in reasonable health at this time hoping these lines may reach and find you and family enjoying good health. I have nothing of importance to write to you only we are suffering with drouth at this time. We have had no rain since the first of April of consequence and it appears no prospect of any. It was so dry last year crops were short and the winter was dry throughout and it is still dry and it appears to me there will be a famine in the land. There is many people in this country that has neither bread nor meat and they can't get it for the money. Some say they have had no bread in two or three weeks and they go with money in their hands and can't get it and the rivers are so low that provisions can't be brought from other countries and I fear some will starve to death for want of something to eat and without a great alteration there will be nothing made in this country at all this year. I would be glad to see you and your family but I don't know that I ever shall. I am old and feeble and cannot travel far if you can come and see me next winter I am broken up here and expect to go to Jackson County, Florida, next winter. My children are there and I expect to go there too. I was entered out three years ago by an old villian by the name of Benjamin Walden and he promised to pay me for my improvement and set the price himself. He was to give me a land warrant for eighty acres of land and a wagon and yoke of oxen and after a while he sent the wagon and oxens and more than a year passed away and he told some of the neighbors he was not going to pay the land warrant and it went through two courts before it was decided and I did not get justice and it went against me and I have to pay the cost, a hundred and forty dollars, besides my lawyers fee and now I must close. Write to me as soon as you get this and let me know how you are and your family is and the prospects of crops and the prospect of your country generally. So nothing more at present but remain your loving and affectionate brother unitl death. Lanier Brewer I assume when he says "country" he means "county". Does anyone have any information about this man? I just started searching him so I can't give any other details. Thanks and happy searching Faye Pekas

    1. [FLJACKSO] Enfinger
    2. I am looking for any info regarding my father's first wife, Evelyn Enfinger. She and my father, John Calvin (J.C. or Jake) Yon, were married in Holmes Co, FL in August 1930. I heard that they lived around the Graceville area (or near the FL/AL line) during their short marriage. They had a stillborn son, J. E. Yon, born and died July 8, 1932. I find no record of their divorce or my father's marriage to my mother, Jane R. Chester (who was from Havana, Gadsden Co, FL). John was living with his mother in the Cottondale area in the 1935 state census. I assume he and Evelyn were either divorced or separated by then. John was with my mother in Havana, FL by 1940. Both my parents are dead; I have no clue as to what happened to Evelyn. She may have remarried. No one knows where the child is buried. My father was born in 1910, so I would assume Evelyn was born about the same time, give or take a few years. I am looking for any info regarding my father, Evelyn and their son so I can fill in a few blanks for my research. Thanks for any help. Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL

    2. Dear James (and all): Thank you for letting me know the correction for the Caverns. I reckon they changed their web address and didn't tell me <hmmmpphhh!> lol That stuff happens a lot with web pages, I'm glad those are relatively easy to change. Thank you, also, for the corrected url. It would be fantastic if ALL of the GenWeb sites had the same basic information about each county. I know it's helpful to me when I visit a county for research it would be nice to learn about local information when I'm visiting a location. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season. 2. Dear Theresa (and for the benefit of others): I've camped (in a tent) at the Florida Caverns in Marianna. The campsites are located very close to the Blue Hole swimming area. There is a bathhouse complete with hot water showers and a small play area in the center of the camping area. I suggest you contact the Florida Caverns directly and make reservations (850) 482-1228. Check out the following web site for further information regarding accommodations in and around Jackson County: <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~fljackso/accommodations.html">http://www.rootsweb.com/~fljackso/accommodations.html</A> The photo on that web page directly below the Florida Caverns link was taken at a campsite at the Caverns within the last two years. Most sites are of a good size, have water, picnic tables, and optional electricity. I believe most have a fire pit, however outdoor fires may or may not be allowed, depending upon the dryness of the area. Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
