I am looking for information on the Walters family that lived in the Sink Creek/Jackson County area from the early 1800's. There were several Walters in the area then but I cannot figure out how they were related. Charlie G. Walters and his wife Lilla Walsingham, married in 1901 in Washington County, moved to the Sink Creek area within a couple of years. There were already a number of Walters living there when they arrived. Any information on the Walters in Jackson County (or Calhoun Co.) would be appreciated.
Does anyone have anything on Thomas G. Dickson? Would appreciate any information you may have on him, ie, where he lived and who his children were and who his father was also. Glen
Hi, Just wanted to say I have a small book on the "ghost towns of Fla". It only gives a general description and probably needs updating. For example: " KELLA - 3 miles north of Dellwood on gravel road. " If I can look up anything , pls let me know. Glenda.
Glenda, this sounds really interesting..How many ghost towns are near Jackson County,if its not too much trouble looking that up? I love to go too old ghost towns near where all my older generations came from.. Gadsden Co... FL Marriages 1881-1930 need typist...This set is white marriages only. The African-American set has already been typed. Need people who have time to jump on the computer and type .... I copied these records over a year ago and gave them to a lady to type who had problems and could not type them after all. I have just today found the back up copy. This is what it will look like....James Edenfield will rearrange the lines after we type them in excel. There are no dates on the index just the page number and sometimes a line number. We will type in spreadsheet program. Old Book II - mid 1881 - 1887 Anett, Allen Line # 455 to Sarah Gaines Page 60 I hope to get enough people so we will each only have about 15 pages to type. I am mailing a copy of these pages to James Endenfield so he can help us a proof reader. We will put a * by the names we are not sure about the spelling. Betty

Possum Trot White's Cemetery is behind the old Possum Trot Store. James and Fannie Ray Reeves said they have found it and want to show it to me when I get up there. They said the cemetery is well taken care of. They also said if you blink you will miss it. James said they had a heck of a time finding it. They also said that there has recently been a burial in the cemetery. Now we found the Possum Trot African-American cemetery in 2000. I was told about the white cemetery but couldn't find it. ---------------------------------------------------- Here is the directions to Possum Trot African-American cemetery or Snelling Cemetery. ................ Hello, The town of Parramore was a thriving community at around the time of the turn of the century. At that time there were stores, riverboat landings, schools, churches, sawmills, a post office and naval stores industries. Today very little is left. The cemeteries at Oak Grove and Circle Hill churches date from the era of the town. There are a few buildings left, including a one room school house. There also is a monument at the ruins of Central School. The property of the town is owned by a number of different land owners. Best, Dale Cox
Just a word on "Paramore". To me it would be a stretch of ones imagination to call that area a "town". My thinking on it would be that it was more of a COMMUNITY, and a rather large one at that in AREA, but with the various things enumerated by Dale, so maybe some would or could call it a town. It is to each his/her own. Glen

Do you have any idea how I can start, to find his grave and burial record. We put a memorial in our cemetery by his wife. His name was Frederick Andres/Andrews. He was b. abt. 1800. His wife`s name was Elizabeth (Eliza) Odom Andrews. My gg grandfather was b. there also in 1846, Thomas H. Andrews. They were coming back from some other part of Fla. He had "the fever". If there is anyway you can help me, I would be so very grateful. Sincerely, Lydie Anderson

I know many of you on the Jackson Co FL list can help with this.... Betty Subj: 1870's Jackson County Date: 03/09/2002 6:00:20 PM Eastern Standard Time From: [email protected] (Nancy Compton) To: [email protected] Greetings From Idaho! My name is Nancy L. Compton and I live in Boise, Idaho. I am researching my great-grandfather's family name of Watford, Wadford. I've searched the 1870 and 1880 censuses and noted many Wat(d)fords having lived in Jackson County, Florida during those times. These families are related, however, after years of research, I've found no proof or disproof that my family belongs to this group. To give you a history: My great-grandfather, William Henry Whadford (Wadford/Watford) was born on September 15, 1862 in Newton, Dale County, Alabama. The story of his family and ancestors he passed to future generations has been most confined. Someone within the family now supposed his folks migrated by wagon from South Carolina. Watford trails are from North and South Carolinas to southeastern Alabama; some went to Florida and then Texas. This was a confirmed trail for many Watfords heading west. My g-grandfather lived out his life in Paonia, Colorado and is buried there, to which I'm a native. His story was he was orphaned at the age of 2 years when his people died in a "plague". Supposedly, his family traveled by houseboat(?) to visit relatives and everyone was found dead on the houseboat except him. After a couple of days, he was discovered and sent to live with an uncle in Florida, but ran away with cousins when he was a young boy (possibly 11 or 12?) and they ended in Texas with another uncle. Hearsay is that his Florida uncle had a son the same age and was lazy and later joined The John Phillips Sousa Marching Band. It's anyone's guess if any of this is true. The first trace I can find of him is his first marriage in Texas in 1885. The first census I found that lists him is Colorado's 1910 census. He states that he was indeed born in Alabama, as well as his unknown father; his unknown mother is listed as being born in Florida. That census also states he is a "survivor of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy". Of course, it's not possible that he himself had fought. The Colorado 1920 census lists his birthplace as Alabama and both his parents having been born in North Carolina. I also discovered he was illiterate and my great-grandmother taught him to read simple words and write his name. Water travel from Henry County, (home to many Wat(d)fords) Ala. to Jackson County could easily be feasible on the Chattahoochee River. I gather they were not "church-mouse" poor as some Watfords were listed in the 1860 census as having real and personal property. Were personal houseboats common and frequently used? I have an internet map of Jackson County around 1895 and I am curious to learn if anything is known about the Watfords Florida settlements and/or cemetery. I briefly reviewed the censuses, however they were only able to loosely point a few locations. Would you please direct me to where I can find this information? I'm also curious about these old families names associated with Watford/Wadfords: Askew Baxley Mixon Newton Taylor Tindell Windham Watson Register The Wat(d)fords and the above families frequently intermarried. I'm sorry to have overwhelmed you, but thank you for your patience and time to read this e-mail. I know there are answers to this 140 year old mystery. History time-line wise, 140 years was not that long ago. I'm chasing every tidbit that comes along and I would so greatly appreciate any direction you can give me. Thank you and I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon! Very truly yours, Nancy L. Compton 12165 W. Bowmont Street Boise, Idaho 83713-6607 208-327-0782 [email protected]

Well, I've done it... I have moved to the panhandle of Florida (Panama City). Unfortunately, I'm working FULL TIME which happens to be the same hours the courthouses are open, so I'm not able to do much research. <frown> But, at least I'm back in the neighborhood. <hooray!> A couple of years ago we did a "reunion" in Marianna. Would anyone be interested in another this year??? If so, please let me know. My email is still the same. Cindy [email protected]
Stan and all: I found these records at a library and thought it might be useful to place them online since it listed churches in the area as of a specific time. As to finding the individuals, I'd probably do a search using one of the major search engines (yahoo, ask, excite, etc.) for that surname - Grace, for instance, in Graceville, Jackson County. On a regular basis the Jackson County Floridan publishes information about local churches. Perhaps someone who gets the newspaper can take a look for a contact name on that particular church. Hope this helps some.
